I started watching your channel a long time ago when you ran waste oil experiments in a diesel heater. Your tenacity of tearing it down and rebuilding it testing waste oil sold me you are the real deal. Really appreciate your work. You do not give up easily! Thanks so much, for your work and keeping the swearing off camera (cause there must be swearing lol) Have a great Christmas and as long as you burn waste oil I will watch.

Thanks for the comment ! When I swear, it's usually because I'm disappointed in myself, or I'm tangled in a mess that I knew I should have cleaned up, haha. I really enjoy tinkering and experimenting. The diesel heaters and waste oil heater are a constant source of answering "I wonder what happens if".

You should install a water heater pressure and temperature blow off valve. They are basically free if you steal it on a water heater on the side of the road, 30$ CAD new at the hardware store. It could save you from a fatal accident if you ever forget a valve closed. Thanks for the videos!

That's a good idea. That way, even if all of the safety systems fail, it will still vent in a safe way. If I do make a bypass loop, it likely won't be a 100% bypass, so that I don't have issues with the water freezing. That being said, I may switch to an antifreeze.

You ROCK brother! BTW Merry Christmas 🎄. We now heat our single wide trailer home in Northern Michigan with the Vevor diesel heater because of you. Do not worry, I set them up safely and have monitors that have never gone past zero. That said, today on Christmas we changed out the fan cone from a Speeding Pro blah blah blah that never ever ran. Perfect fix. Quiet as a baby napping. I just want you to know how much of a positive effect you have had on our lives. God bless you and yours and please keep the great videos coming! Peace on Earth and good will to all mankind and other true sentiments. Again, you Rock as a human bro!

@loweredexpectations4927 Bro, I wrapped my space between the ground and single wide floor in plastic and a wooden exterior. The exhaust keeps my floors warmer and with some heat tape on the pipes we get water all year long now. Again, bro, you positively effected our lives in a massive way. Love you bro! Keep up the good work. I, BTW, used the nautical fitting to seal both units for the exhaust and just reversed the fitting so yeah. Nothing at all gets back into our house.

After the cold season ended a couple years ago we've sort of skipped Winter. 70 degrees Freedom Units in January, my grass has not stopped growing in 3 years I am not kidding! Since I also make a living my making long grass short, I have had income in the Winter and less need to tinker with projects like waste oil to reduce energy costs - Also, there is a lot of gas industry here and gas prices have actually fallen in the past years, despite inflation. That was a very neat burner you had in the intro reel, looking forward to catching up on some of your shenanegans from the past year!

Thanks Wallace. Merry Christmas ! The fan is nice and doesn't draw much power. I have considered using it to push hot air directly into my duct work. However, altho the furnace fan draws a lot more power, I can connect it so that it is on a thermostat and not have it running all the time. I haven't 100% decided yet, but I did order a 18x20 exchanger that will fit pretty well in my furnace plenum.

@@loweredexpectations4927 What if you ran another heat ex-changer and fan in series to another part of the house to utilize some of the extra heat left over from the main one?? Another crazy option, would be to use multiple heat ex-changers,or a much bigger one with a more powerful fan and tie into the main duct of the heating system of the house. On a side note, it is nice to se you smiling again.

Joel, I do not believe you have anything to worry about with metal deterioration. I burned a 30 gallon barrel stove for 18 years in my living room with many red hot and glowing adventures. After all that abuse the barrel looked as good as the day I installed it. No detectable deterioration whatsoever. A steel drum is much thinner than the propane tanks you are using. Your mileage may vary I am just telling you what I experienced. Merry Christmas my Friend🎄

Thanks for the comment and reassurance, Mark. I think one possible difference between my burner and others, is that it is a oxygen rich flame... You can tell because it is blue. I'm honestly not concerned about it, but I believe an oxygen rich flame, really hot metal, is much more of a concern for oxidation. Merry Christmas and thanks for the support.

7:50 I'd look into addressing that issue. If you took some aluminum foil and crumple it around the water lines I think it would provide some level of insulation against fire. You might lose a bit of heat, but if it's getting too hot... Actually, maybe it would be better to have a larger coolant loop? Perhaps an insulated tank/reservoir. If you need to move heat faster, use larger or more pipes. If you want to store the heat, split it into an insulated tank - but that would require multiple loops, valves, controls, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to share what you have figured out with us. I have some questions about what you are currently doing for freeze protection when you are not running the burner. Are you draining all the outdoor lines? Why do you advise against using RV antifreeze? Are you still using the 6 gallons of automotive antifreeze? This doesn't get you much protection with such a large volume of water. Thanks!
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 4 сағат бұрын
I am now running a low concentration of antifreeze in water. I keep the pump running no stop and that way it won't freeze... Not very efficient for a few reasons. In the future I will be using propylene glycol to ensure it doesn't freeze. RV antifreeze boils at too low of a temperature, and also gels up when it gets cold. It won't freeze and damage your lines, but it will plug them quickly. You will not be able to unplug them. You can get propylene glycol in large pails for floor heating and such things. It is a bit pricey, but not compared to buying automotive antifreeze.

especially on a copper pipe it is easier and in a few ways superior (no joint to leak and easy to replace the sensor...to just bind the thermistor to the pipe with silicone tape and a small mount of foam insulation around it. The reading will be very similar to the internal method.

@loweredexpectations4927 4 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the comment / info. I have thermocouples form my multimeter, and had been attaching them to the outside of the pipe, and that works really well. The meat probes do not work well like this, at all. I assume due to the shape and heat wicking of the large metal body. I may have some NTC thermistors for my 3D printer that I can use on the meat thermometer, but not sure if they are the same range. The original probes are 100K

5:55 Silicone is rated to like 500F +/- some are made for higher temps, but generally speaking, you should be able to dunk a Dollar Store silicone spatula in 475F oil and it will not cause any immediate harm.

Nice job...Maybe insulate your barrels for when your down for cleaning, or whatever other reason, as well as over all efficiency..Wonder if it would be worth cutting some registers in the basement ceiling/Living room/kitchen floors to let some of the heat to just rise through..Wouldn't want anything pressurized..Very nice, you went the whole nine yards..Lots of work and expense, but if you can get free used oil, and keep it running, it's a great way to heat the house, and it seems like your 98% of the way there..M Christmas
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 11 сағат бұрын
I have considered insulating the barrels, but because they are in my house, any heat lost will go into my laundry room. If it were insulated, it would give me a little more control over when and where the heat goes. When I was growing up, my father cut a few holes and installed registers, and the old house used to have a coal fired boiler, and the house had poor circulation. I'm HOPING to install the heat exchanger into my furnace, so that the heat is distributed evenly... we will see how that plan goes. Yes, I am very happy with the system and think it is worth investing more into. I think you are right and it is 98% finished... sometimes that last few percent can be the hardest and longest.

Merry Christmas. I did a setup like this in an old wood stove. It got way too hot and my expansion tank was way too small. I’m using a huge 20x24x4 exchanger in an old furnace with removed electric hot deck. I want to get an old gas water heater and try something’s. First, get a 8kw Vevor diesel heater and pipe the output and exhaust up the flue to see if it will heat transfer enough to make useable hot water. If not, I want to make a smaller burner, like in the below video, and pump it up that same flue. I know that will be hot enough. Great video. Thanks for the ideas. Here’s the small burner I found on this channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5LafnqjnJ1qntEfeature=shared
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 3 сағат бұрын
Yeah, wood heat is pretty intense. You'd have to have a large storage tank as a buffer so that you could keep this under control. The 8kw heaters are really about 5kw of output. If you have an insulated storage tank and allow it to run for a while, you could heat water, but the recovery rate will be fairly low. I think you would need 4 heaters to have a reasonable recovery rate. Ultimately, you need a burner that can consume about 1.5 to 2 litres of oil per hour, to make enough heat. If you are not using natural gas or propane, it is a good idea to have storage tanks. Wood and waste oil burners do not like to switch on and off, so you need a place for the heat to go when you aren't using it or all of it.
