Are you happy? How do we even define happiness? And how can we learn to cultivate it from the inside out? Let's talk about it. :) This video is about how I learned to just be happy.
This is a topic that's very close to my heart, and I've been wanting to make this video for a long time. Happiness is an elusive term, and I've done a lot of thinking about it ever since hitting the point of burnout 4 years ago. I've come to realize that happiness can be like a skill. It’s not a state of being we can achieve, or a place we can get to. I think it’s already inside of us.
So let's talk about how to be happier in life. I'd love to hear what makes you happy in the comments section as well. :)
Lots of love,
🌼 Vera

My cat laying on me when I sit on the couch, a cup of tea on a cold day, a soft blanket, a chat with a good friend, touching the pieces of furniture that have been in the family for years, looking at the art hanging on my walls. Happiness can be found in the simple things, like the color of the clouds in the sky as I look out the window early on a Sunday morning 🥰❤️

This question just came to my mind today. Then I realized that happy can only be achieved by the balance among mind, body and spirit. Even I am doing things I love during weekend, I felt tired as my energy was depleting. So, I rest, listen to music, stop my learning for a while, rejuvenate, and then I feel alive again, content and happy. Balance between body and mind, and even spirit is important for us to feel happy.

I have recently realized that “earthing” really helps with my depression. I’ve heard about that before, but i never purposely did that or thought about it. This year i noticed that these days that i get to swim in the sea or lake, walk around barefoot in the grass etc, i really do feel happier and calmer. We have only 2 warm months where i live so i try to take the most of it. There’s some perks about autumn too. Yesterday i picked chanterelles from the forest and made dinner from these in the evening. So i literally need to not just be outside, but touch nature with my skin. ☺️😀

New subscriber, I’m loving your content. What makes me happy….playing with my cat, lying in the sun and just being, feeling the warmth of my favorite coffee mug as I sit and sip, playing with my grandbaby and watching life through his eyes, walking my dogs without being on autopilot, really paying attention to my surroundings as my pets do,pulling a fresh baked cobbler out of the oven and serving it in a beautiful dish, tying on a pretty apron as I putter around in the kitchen, crocheting a washcloth for a friend and taking the extra time to make a fancy border for it, browsing the greeting card isle and picking up “thinking of you”cards. Sitting on my covered porch during a thunderstorm. Most of these things are absolutely free💓

The way you define happiness reminds me of how I define and approach mental health. It is something that can be seen as tangible and persuadable. Something that can be worked on each day and approached with intention. It probably doesn't just "HAPPEN." It is a daily process of self-reflection, intentionality, and sometimes even hard work. Great video!

@@DrJustininJapan In life athere are only 2 problems --mind and the body and both are inter-connected. Take control over these and life is fun . Happiness is within us. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath and mind [brain] are closely related causing stress-anxiety. For a better life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. Change happens from within by itself. Day or night, when taking a walk, sitting in a park, when reading, before sleep etc sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Reduce watching social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

I often try to plan an activity depending on the weather as I don't like to 'waste' a beautiful sunny day. However I have occasionally forced myself to go out for this reason only to discover I was too tired/unmotivated/unhappy to fully appreciate it. I have discovered that I can still enjoy the sunshine if I stay home to rest/read/meditate if this is necessary for me to recharge my battery. Now I check my mood/energy levels as well as the weather before deciding how to spend my day ! As you say in this beautiful video, happiness comes from within. We will tend to associate happiness with sunshine and warmth but I can think of many occasions when I have felt contented on darker days also 😊 I've had times too when I have been in a beautiful location and felt unhappy and yet other times far less scenic and still felt joyful. So yes, happiness really does come from within 💕

What a beautiful video to play/hear while sipping coffee on a Sunday morning. I never heard "hike your hike" before; love the truth in that. In the past, my career robbed me of happiness:(my job was my life as it consumed most of my day (& night). Due to both choice as well as elements outside my control, I am trying to carve out my own self-employed path. My days are now mine and I can do things I love again: hang clothes in the sunshine, enjoy my mornings, no office politics... I'm actually happy... so in the end, it was a lifestyle change, for me, that gave me the opportunity to refocus on things that I enjoy, to slow down and actually enjoy my life. Thank you for your videos. They brighten my whole week 😊

You have grown so much Vera. Everything you said is very true. Most of us chase happiness, the closer we think we are getting the further it moves away. I believe living in the moment is where happiness lies. If we are looking ahead or behind we are missing it. A hug from my grown son, watching gold fish or a hummingbird. Walking on the beach or in the Redwoods. These are things I am grateful for and enjoy the most. Thank you for reminding me of where I need to be. ☮️

It was blazing hot outside during the day with no shade, no showers, you had to walk like a mile to get anywhere, bottled water was $10 a bottle, I could barely get any decent sleep... and I thought the exact same thing to myself: "What the heck am I doing here?!" This is a beautiful segment;I love it so much. I also want to say that recently I got extremely sick and thinking about many simple things you said in many different episodes genuinely helped me to get well. And to take better care of myself than before. The things you say sound simple and as though we should already know them but I realized right away that though I was myself aware of many things you said, such as, we dont have to measure ourselves by productivity, there is a huge difference between being aware of something and having it really register in your life and how you are living from moment to moment. EVERRYTHING you say everywhere I look is HIGHLY useful and the way you say it helps so much. I cant analyze it beyond that. I can just say that when I think about what you say and when I actually practice it, I can see that there is a difference in the way I feel. Please never doubt the value of what you are doing and saying in simple happy zen. I am almost 73 years old and I wish so much I had known about many of things you speak about in my twenties and even earlier. On the other hand, they are useful now as I am growing older and give a new freshness to my health, my outlook and just my being. God bless you Vera. Please remember nothing you do from your heart is ever wasted. You are making people happy all over the world through even just one thing you say that practically helps them. Please take good care of yourself. And thank you so much for teaching all of us truly how to take better care of ourselves in simple easy but SO effective ways.

I just received my dream promotion at work and love the complexity and importance that comes with it. The only downside is that I have to wake up at 4am every morning to get started at work. Your lessons today helped me understand that I should not let this one issue become any bigger than it is. I am alot happier now and am thankful for this opportunity. Also, I should let go of expectations about a rigid work life schedule and just let time unfold as it does rather than trying to control everything all the time. Being at the beach and in the ocean or on the water makes me happy!! I know this is a more common sentiment but now for the somewhat odd happiness source....Cleaning makes me happy and it has since I was a kid? Don't ask me why but the semi-instant gratification of a room that looked unkempt and now looks beautiful really makes me happy.

Hi Vera! What a great video! I would have liked it more than once if it were possible 😊 During the first lockdown last year I followed a course called "The Science of Well-Being" taught by Professor Laurie Santos and I took a lot from it. For me, being happy means to be content with who I am and what I have, knowing I did my personal best to achieve my goals and handled according to my beliefs/values. As I turned 30, I realized I was tired of playing a role and now, I just want to be myself and let go of everything (and everyone!) that doesn't match. Have a nice Sunday! 🍂🤗

I'm retired and grateful for my loved ones and being able to live in my old family homeplace out in the country. My life is not perfect and there are always health and financial challenges. But I start each day with a great mug of coffee, do my 15 minutes of yoga and journal my list of gratitudes.

I walk my dog early every morning. I always feel happier when I get home, regardless of whether I've seen the sunrise, a deer, a fox or none of those things. Sometimes I get soaking wet (I live in Scotland where it rains frequently) and just see a few drenched runners but I always feel grateful for my walk. It revitalises me more than staying an extra hour in bed does.

This video was spot on concerning happiness, Vera. It really is about moments of joy and appreciating what is going right. And not always looking for the next thing. I’ve been learning to play my spiritual songs on my piano and when I can create the sound and melody I hear in my “mind’s ear”, it is truly satisfying. That is pure joy for me. I also love creating illustrated cartoon doodles each evening. I love when I portray what is meaningful to me and it’s aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Spotting mockingbirds, dragon flies and butterflies are delightful moments for me. Making something more simple is also deeply satisfying and makes me happy. Thank you, Vera, for the inspiration! ☺️🙌

You've really hit the nail on the head with this video. Everything you said resonated. I particularly liked your explanation of 'feeling happy vs being happy'. A big heartfelt thank you, Vera. I'm sure you're affecting and changing many lives, including mine. I've followed you for a year or so now and can see how far I've come, that letting go of things has become so easy, and is not a source of happiness for me anymore. I hope that next year (or whatever time from now on) I find myself far into the journey of being happy, the way I did into the journey of living a simpler life. (Also I think I might be the 1000 person to have liked the video, yay!, haha)

Thank you Vera, this video inspired me💞 Especially about the difficulty to make personal decision in life. I always try to weigh pros and cons in my decisions and i choose nothing. That's why, I often feel unhappy in my professional life. Plus, I've never had the slightest romantic relationship with any woman at 38😅 Shame on me, I'm now too old. 6:16 : "What matters isn't what you choose, it's that you choose.", so beautiful🙏 And yes this is important to know ourself better, to be more benevolent with our self, because we are the person with who we are at every moment of our life. To hate ourself is destructive and I know what I'm speaking. Thank you Vera to help us with your precious guidance🙏💞

Great Video Vera! Always so comforting and therapeutic to watch your videos!🌿 I find I'm most happy when I try to be myself around others, accept the fact that I'm unique, live humbly and not compare myself to others, and be content with my simple life. Like you, I also really take time to appreciate even the smallest things in life, because in the end, these small things give me real joy! Thank you for this video, Vera! This is what I needed to hear right now, as I have been quite depressed recently. Especially the point about making decisions, though they will never be 100% perfect. I always tend to overthink my decisions and if I have small doubts about anything, I just stay in the same situation and don't change something at all :( It's time to finally make a decision about what I'm going to do about my job - staying at my current company or trying out something new :)
