Most of us go through life surrounded by others, from school to working in offices, there's always people around. It wasn’t until I left my corporate job that I realized I needed to “detox” from being around people all the time. I had to adjust to a life where I spent more time ALONE. In today’s episode, I’m talking about how I learned to love being alone and how it unlocked a creative side that I didn’t even know I had.

I have had a really rough two years and was stuck in a deep depression. I started watching your channel and began doing projects around my home that became my therapy, truly. I am excited to wake up each day now, anticipating my next creative venture. Thank you for giving me hope.

I have used power tools for years. But you give me so much inspiration to get up and take a chance on tackling a project that normally would not dare do . So thank you so much McCenna.

I just recently started on a room makeover on our first home, and took the plunge in removing old paneling just to uncover the damaged drywall underneath. My boyfriend laughed because I literally threw my hands up and said “Well, what would MaCenna do?!” So here we are gathering materials, and insight from others in the KZbin community to learn how to fix our drywall on our own. You have been an inspiration for many years now for me, and I’m slowly gaining the confidence to try these major projects ❤

I really needed to hear this podcast. My husband passed away two years ago, and I have been so deeply depressed. My children are grown so I am alone a lot. I have never been alone before. But I am starting to embrace it. Your videos of the cottage have inspired me to try new things. Thank you

I have to tell you that I have always been terrified of power tools, and never had to use them. I’ve been watching you renovate the cottage, and you e inspired me to just get busy. At 71, after retiring, I decided to refurbish furniture. You gave me the courage to purchase my first table saw and jigsaw. ( I’m still not sure if I’m calling them by the right names), but I’m having so much fun with them that I started making my own bookcases and tables. I never dreamed I would build enough muscle to haul that furniture around by myself, but after last weeks episode when you bought that amazing desk, I brought home a truck dolly. I can now move my larger pieces by myself and feel much more independent. Thank you for the inspiration sweetie!

Inspiring as always MaCenna. I have lived the "Failure to Launch" life and I absolutely hate it about myself. I'm a creative too, but get stuck in my circumstances and get overwhelmed, basically with anything. So I back burner it or don't even try. I do realize there are a lot of rooted things that have probably attributed to that but I want so badly to not feel like all the good things are meant for everyone else. I fully understand how being alone helps in so many ways. I think the pandemic forced us to understand that piece of us many of us weren't use to. At least it was for me. I got a little too use to it I think. I wish for more balance in that, finding that secret sauce that you've seemed to understand, work hard for, and find your place. It's so wonderful and inspiring. So as much as I'd love to tap into my love for design in a place of my own, I'm fully inspired and empowered by you my friend for your light and energy you bring to your passion. Thank you ❤

I love that you know and understand self love. Kudos to momma Kathy because that seed was probably planted in you at a young age. My mother was the voice telling me "you can't or you could never." I think often times for me it's that voice that holds me back. I hope your momma and your dad know what a wonderful human they raised.

That’s the truth. My mother could not pay me a compliment or give me a word of encouragement or allow someone else to do so in her presence if her life depended on it. Being subjected to these types of behaviors is very troubling. MaCenna’s mother, in comparison, is an absolute saint as far as I’m concerned. I absolutely adore her.

I would love to hear you talk more about the culture in Los Angeles! I feel like there’s always a shift in your videos from Texas to LA, and I would be curious what your thoughts were on the stereotypes surrounding LA and the people who move there! What are your experiences with it? Was it a huge culture shift when you first moved there, or did you feel like you fit right in? I’d love to hear a more detailed account of when you first moved to LA, or what inspired you as a child to move there!

Soooo, I am one of your older viewers (74), and appreciate so much about your energy, and inspirational posts. I also, as a Cancer, love being at home. . . Always have. And also really like being alone. Enjoy all the me, alone time you can get now, because that will change dramatically when you start a family. Not being negative, but a family makes finding the me-alone time harder to find. Just wisdom from one of yourthe grandma viewers .

Use this as your "MaCenna insipired me to do this" comment section. Me first: Years ago I painted a very nice very old wooden bookshelve WITH TURQUOISE WALL PAINT! I know, I was young im sorry. Last summer when MaCenna was showing us how to strip and stain wood for the 100th time i though.. huh, maybe I could do it. AND I DID IT. It took a LONG time because i could only work on it on the weekends but i LOVE it now, its a rich wood tone that warms out the place i love it.

I don’t know if you will see this MaCenna, but here are a couple topics I would love to see you explore on the podcast: - home maintenance: how do you keep your house clean and in good condition? (Garden, pool, interior, light upholstery, rugs, etc). especially, how do you clean delicate second hand items like picture frames, decorative dishes, etc. - designing homes around the world: it would be so much fun to have guests on the podcast from all over the world to discuss the similarities and differences in construction, home design processes, trends etc. - arts and crafts: a chat about how to start painting (art on canvas), sewing, sculpting, etc with your mom - pet care and keeping the house pet friendly: both you and your parents have cute doggos. Thank you so much for the zen content 🙌🥰

I love this because I live alone and it's just my cat and I. Everything I create or build or figure out, is done by me! I installed my ceiling fan in my bedroom, hung up all my own pictures and curtains. Even added new shelves above the laundry for storage space and redid my secondhand fridge including sanding, priming and repainting it and I love it all! Don't need no man!

I'm a cancerian too and I totally get it. I too love being on my own at home and I absolutely never get bored as I always find something to occupy myself. I can get bored in company sometimes, but never when I'm on my own. The pandemic made me worse though, I got so used to staying at home I now don't want to go out. I haven't got agoraphobia or anything so it's not as if I'm scared to go out but I find I only go out now if I have to, like if I run out of food or something, but I don't go out unless there is a reason to as my home is my castle, or my sanctuary where I am most comfortable which is a real cancer thing like the crab who wears it's home on its back LOL😂😅 I am like you though and am extremely chatty when I want to be, but I do need down time afterwards after being sociable. Think I'm an introverted extrovert. 😊

Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪 I’ve been feeling really lost and stuck for quite a while now following some very traumatic family bereavements. When I watch any of your content I feel like there is an artistic element within me trying to find its way out… while I never studied art or drawing at school, my teachers felt I had a talent for it but I’ve never went down that path. However, each time I watch you, I feel like I’m getting nearer to just starting… Im at the stage where I am looking at drawing and painting materials when out shopping but then just walk away and don’t purchase them. There is absolutely nothing stopping me but my 60 year old self… I’m going to purchase even one or two things this weekend and just start doing something! Thank you as always for the inspiration ❤

I tried the oven cleaner diy. It worked on a chest I had. It didn't take off the paint, but it took the old yucky varnish! Turns out I have a Cedar chest on the outside and in! It was very neat. I also, because of you, just started 3 charcuterie boards made from one slab of wood. And I used electric tools, I thought McCenna did this I can too. Thanks for the confidence. 😊

Joining the crowd with my own "MaCenna inspired me to...." I am currently knee deep in renovating my bathroom. I already ran electrical from the fan to over the shower so I could put in a light, patched the drywall, am putting a faux tin ceiling panel up, as well as board and picture moulding, and color-drenching everything in a BOLD color choice; Sherwin William's Inkwell. To put this in perspective, I've been known to pay people to assemble ikea furniture for me. Like, who am I? Hahahaha

One of our lounges desperately wanted doing, it had not been touched since we moved in and was awful. My partner just got home from hospital after having bowel cancer and was out with the dog, I started ripping the old fireplace out as I wanted it on the opposite wall, he came back and he was not impressed, I knew he couldn’t physically help (which was kinda the point) but I carried on, apart from getting a plasterer in and a new window fitted it was all done “ with my own two hands”, I was 61 at the time and so so proud of the result even though it took a couple of months

I had a leak in my home and a portion of my kitchen ceiling had to be cut out. Well that stayed unrepaired for over a year. I have always been self sufficient and could handle a lot of DIY projects. But at the age of 60 (I turned 61 on July 14th.) I didn't think I was still physically capable of drywalling, mudding, sanding, priming and painting a ceiling. Yes, you inspired me and I did it! 😀💪 I am now preparing to refinish all my kitchen cabinets and gut a small powder room to refinish for a winter project. I live in Ontario, Canada and the winters are long. MaCenna, thanks for inspiring me.🌺❤️ P.S. I am also going to be installing stair millwork brackets.👷‍♀️🛠️📐🪛🪚🧰

That's exactly what you do for me! You've opened my eyes to so many things. You are so me in my younger days. I would always tackle projects knowing if it wasn't exactly the right outcome it could easily be changed. I was never afraid to try new things. I'm now in my 70's and I do take more time figuring out what I want and how to achieve the look. I'm more cautious and a little slower tackling everything. I live alone, like you I have a fear if something goes wrong or I get hurt there's no one around to help. I am in the process of making my 2nd guest room into my room to sew, craft and refinish furniture and it been a struggle. I love being alone but I am never lonely. I have a large family and spend time with them any time I want to but my alone time is precious to me. I love your podcasts. You have given me the inspiration I needed to get started on my newest project. ❤

I freaking love you! I'm about to redo my office and I have CRAZY ideas. I've been looking for someone's approval before I start and now I'm bulldozing through. Thank you for this burst of confidence! In the words of your second home, "Let's Do This!"

I’m very curious to see you when you have kids 😁 They never ever ever leave your side. So you are never alone, and they always talk and ask questions 😂 I have been wanting to be alone for a while now too haha

Love this topic. I recharge by being alone. Thank you for all your content!! I assumed you had ppl helping and filming in the background. Also. I HATE painting until I watched your living room video and this podcast. Now I don’t hurry through painting. I listen to the sound and take each wall in-sections so it isn’t so over whelming. Also Jazz music helps which I learned from you. Xoxoxoxo

You had mentioned that your human design profile is a manifestor and manifestors often thrive in solitude and doing things alone. How do you and Romeo keep the spark alive after so many years? Do you ever see a future where you and romeo work together? How do you honor your alone time while also giving time to your relationship?

I’m very much a person who actually prefers to be alone most of the time. I value my creativity and like you said that is more amplified when you spend time alone listening to your own voice. In fact, I don’t turn on any social media or television or music for the first hour after I wake just so I can sit quietly and listen to my own voice and plan my day. I will be in France from the middle of September to the middle of October. I live in Chicago most of the time but I also have a home in the south of France and I wish we could meet up there when you come. I’m going there to work on the renovation of my home there. My home is about 3 hours west of Provence but I would be willing to drive just to meet and tell you how you have inspired me to create the home of my dreams there. I bought a fixer upper and sometimes the work can be a little overwhelming but I always think about how you made your cottage so beautiful with your creativity, hard work and perseverance.

Hey Macenna, I have watched you for years and love your channels and podcast. I have a suggestion: when it’s just you, can you film this using only one camera instead of different angles? I find it distracting. You have such great topics and really loved this one! ❤😘🇨🇦

I work from home 3 out of 5 days (in the education field) so I get the lack of human interaction but there is also so much freedom in being alone. I can work on my DIY projects at my own pace without feeling pressured by others time or schedules. My partner is getting better at recognising when he comes home from a day out, the small projects I've done or started around the house 😊
