I spent 25 years trying to teach myself Turkish the hard way, studying with books and picking it up through immersion during vacations until finally in 2020, during covid, I started having Turkish lessons on italki with my brilliant teacher Nezihe. I have made such progress in the past 3 years. I highly recommend Italki and especially Nezihe. It's much more fun and effective!

In my opinion immersion can work, but in order for it to work, you have to have a certain baseline, if you're only "high beginner", also have the patience to actually look up words you don't understand, perhaps make notes etc. But once you are like more intermediate level, immersion can work without much effort attached to it, with the only caveat being that you have to get input from different types of sources. So, different types of people, or different types of reading material, different contexts

I love that you even actually learned that accent they make when they speak. Nice pronunciation.... I also live in Turkey, dear... but in Bursa... I love your videos, Chelsea... =) In my experience, immersion didn't work for me either... but I am forcing myself to study Turkish... yet I am in level B2 I think but I can now speak with people easier than before =)

I totally get the stubbornness about learning by yourself. I've been learning Finnish since 2015. I've visited twice so far, but I wasn't confident in my ability to speak it so I used English. I had the feeling that getting tutoring would be "admitting defeat", because other people have done it on their own, so I should be able to do the same. But I finally started italki lessons about a year ago now, because I was tired of feeling stuck, and I knew if I wanted to improve my conversational skills, I needed to practice conversation somehow. And last week I bought two One Line A Day journals to try to practice with (that also double as gratitude journals). I still find myself using English far more than I should during my lessons, but I'm trying.

Chelsea, you speak Turkish with Ağrı accent 9:05 An American speaks Turkish with Eastern accent, it's kinda thing only happens in movies :) and being able to live in Turkey for 10 years without knowing Turkish is a miracle...

I know we are required to file for those every year could you by chance help me explain what resources are available once moving there?

I learnt a lot from ‘Duolingo’ and ‘Baasu’. In Baasu you get native speakers to correct your pronunciation and grammatical mistakes etc…

I totally agree with you regarding the immersion method. To stay in Turkey does not necessarily help to learn Turkish. Another myth is that watching TV series will magically help in learning that language. No. Everyone has its own pace and way to memorize, so I think that only by individual effort one can figure out what's the best method for him or her. Also in TÖMER they also talk in Turkish since the first lesson so for people who did not have any contact with Turkish language it can be really annoying. I started to learn Turkish with a private teacher first so when I started TÖMER lessons I was able to understand the professors. Anyway, I have still a long way until I will feel confortable to speak and write, as I need an almost professional level because I am studying in Turkey and Academic Turkish is hard. However, I am sure that I can do it and by listening to others of how easily can be if you do this or that is not the best method. I have my own pace and way to memorize and I will try to adapt to it. Anyway thanks for sharing your experience with us. Good luck to you too in your learning process!

You're right about immersion. I know Mexican immigrants who've been in U.S. for most of their lives and still don't speak English.

To some degree I would accept that it's improper to to be tough a language you are new to using Emmerson methods, but to some degree it matters, when I was in A1 I was hearing nothing but as I progressed to B1 I literally was hearing every thing in just three months. İf you do care about learning a language you don't need to hear everything's, you just have to not careless and dig deeper. 🎉

Hey chelsea, teach us your native language. In Turkey, teachers teach so formal but i think we should learn more informal, you know :). And also you can give us some tips about pronunciation. It would be great.

Immersion is great if you are enthusiastic about learning the language and if you already have at least a little bit of Turkish. Otherwise if you strike up a conversation with strangers and all you can say is “Merhaba” you won't get anywhere.

I also experienced this, immersion didn’t work. But I wonder if it doesn’t work for adults that are not at least bilingual, whereas people who learned to speak another language growing up (most young people in Europe now), maybe they catch on easy or are able to with immersion because their brain works differently. Congrats on learning Turkish, amazing!

What helped me learn Turkish was watching the drama series regularly and trailers with English subtitles 🙂 you can connect action with phrases/the mood and hear the most common expressions often/in an over dramatic manner

Learning Turkish is a pain in the ass. You have to learn lots of words and that takes time.

You have to learn a lot of words with any foreign language when you try to learn it. I don't think this feature of learning a new language is about Turkish 😅 .

It’s complicated, but possible.I’m an interpreter, so I’ve met a lot of people like that. General it’s not that they don’t speak(in my case English) at all, In most cases they understand a lot and speak to like an A1-A2 level. In some instances even more than that. That’s enough to scrape by for most situation
