One of the greatest accomplishments that I have been able to achieve in the past few years has been losing 100 pounds. And what I would consider an even greater achievement is the fact that I have been able to keep the weight off, while eating as much as I want. I know for a lot of people who have been battling obesity their whole lives like I did, that might sound too good to be true. When I made the decision that I had finally had enough of being fat and sick, I decided that I was going to try everything possible to lose the weight. But at the same time I was limited in my options for "everything", due to suffering a football career ending back injury that lead to a 6 1/2 hour surgery so that I would be able to walk and function like a normal individual again. For myself that was extremely tough, I had spent my whole life as a high level athlete and always had the idea that when I did decide that I needed to lose the weight I would just begin running or do more cardio. So with that option off the table I began to look for ways to lose weight related to my diet. At the time I was getting my degree in livestock production and so I initially gravitated towards the animal based fad diets. For two years I tried the low carb diet, the atkins, the ketogenic diet, the JJ Virgin diet, really if there was a diet where you ate a ton of animal flesh and secretions I tried it. After a couple of years of following these "die"ts I realized a few things, I had not lost any significant amount of weight on any of them, on the ones that I did lose some weight initially I gained it all back plus some after just a few more weeks, I was constantly constipated and my overall digestion felt the worst it had ever been. I then had the most important realization when I began looking at the people who were prescribing and telling me to follow these animal food based diets. My first real "ah ha" moment was looking up at my nutrition professor whose advise I had been following, and it hit me that maybe it wasn't such a great idea to be following the advise of a 300 pound nutrition "expert". Then I surveyed all the others I was taking advise from and they were all either fat or much more overweight than I wanted to be when I reached my goal of losing 100 pounds. I realized the only reason I was following their advise was that they might have been a little lighter in weight than I was at the time. And they were also telling me what I really wanted to hear about my diet at the time, that I could eat all the eggs, bacon and cheese that I wanted and lose weight. But upon further analysis the foods I was told would help me lose weight like a "magic pill", were the exact same foods that made me fat in the first place.
That is really when I began to seriously research and look into what truly healthy and skinny people are doing to lose weight and keep it off. And what I began to find was truly shocking for a country boy from Indiana, who was in the middle of getting his livestock production degree because he believed the world needed more "high quality" protein from animal based sources. What I found to be the real truth that has been in place for hundreds and thousands of years, was the opposite of everything I had been taught to believe. Which in hindsight makes sense because in fact everyone who was teaching me to believe these things were either the children of overweight parents, currently overweight themselves or raising overweight families. The truth that seemed to elude myself and my family was that the longest lived healthy human populations in recordable history have eaten diets based around plant foods and eaten the majority of their calories from high carbohydrate starch filled plant foods. (If you are interested about learning more about these populations I would recommend books like Healthy at 100 (amzn.to/2ROuQvz) and the Blue Zones (amzn.to/2CLXaun). I would also recommend some talks by some amazing doctors ( • The Starch Solution - ... ) who are doing incredible work regarding the diets of these healthy and long lived populations.) So I began eating vegan meals based around the same starchy foods I had been previously taught to avoid like the plague. What I found was truly amazing about these foods was that I was able to eat them until I was full and I actually lost weight.....

I had lost over 100 pounds with zero exercise on a vegan diet so just goes to prove it’s all about what you eat and very little about your activity. If you want to speed up results or build stamina, get tight and toned then yes workout, but all the exercise in the world won’t help you lose weight if you’re eating crap. 👌🏼

@@user-xw9fb5yl9i At first... I was losing it fast. Like around 15 lbs or more in the first month or two But then as I got smaller... it took longer. On average now, I lose about 2lbs a week when I am just watching what I eat. I lose more if I am walking/hiking/running and working out. :)

It Fluctuated, when I did a lot of cardio up to 5 -7pounds... if I didn’t 3lbs a month

Man I can’t tell you enough how much this diet has helped me in only 1 month of doing this so far! I was 217 and when I measured and weighed myself this past Monday, I was 197, I lost 20 lbs! I’m so excited because in a few months I’ll be in my ideal weight for my height, and then after I hit my ideal weight which is 175-180 then I will start working on the physical aspect of it such as abs/chest/arms but this diet has been such a blessing! I remember my face was very chubby and now my face looks even better, and I can actually fit in clothes again, I lost about 5 inches on my sides so now when I wear shirts, they won’t pop out anymore and I can put on slim fit again, very excited to see my progress and in 1 year when I look back at how I used to be, I will never want to be in that lifestyle again, because it was a horrible depressing life style that kept me from living, so to anybody in the comment section wanting to do this diet but are unsure or don’t have enough motivation, trust me on this, if you believe you can do it, and if your willpower is strong enough, then you can achieve anything! As I am on my own journey you guys are as well! And truly you won’t regret going vegan I can tell you that!

I just started a vegan diet about 15 days ago I went from 300 lb to 286 within that time.. I've been eating potato with mixed vegetables soup and it's help me chop this much weight and feel way better

I just started a plant based diet! I gained 40 pounds during my pregnancy. Gave birth 12/21/18 and have only lost 7 pounds of that weight. I was already overweight. Before pregnancy I was 200 pounds. I said to myself enough is enough! I have to be healthy for myself and my family. It’s definitely genetic though because I wasn’t eating too bad before. I gain weight very easily and my mother was overweight and died over heart failure. I’m loving this plant based diet! It’s actually easier to cook now and I eat so clean and wholesome. I’ve lost 5 pounds in 6 weeks.

He is 1,000% right!!!!!!!! I cut out oil, breads, rices, soda, alcohol, white potatoes, pasta, processed juice, meat, poultry, fish, nuts, seeds (except flaxseed), avocado, chips, french fries and salt. I am losing weight like crazy. Have another 80 lbs to lose. I no longer eat out: was eating a lot of junk vegan which is bad because it is loaded with fat and salt. The amazing thing is how fast your body responds to the change of diet (within days)! It is important too get 7-8 hours of sleep, relaxation techniques (try meditation), take supplements like B12, Magnesium (make sure you pick one that is highly absorbed), a good multivitamin. I also take Tumeric, COQ10 and D3. And hydrate: I drink 80-100 ounces of water daily with the juice freshly squeezed lemons added in two glasses. And finally get regular exercise: you don’t have to go crazy just be consistent. The more you do it the easier it gets. I started with stretching, light weights, practicing swinging my golf clubs and a recumbent bike. I’m in the process of getting a standing desk treadmill since I am working from home more often. Try to get fresh organic produce and also a good veggie wash too. Avoid the temptation to buy sauces. Forks Over Knives puts out a really good cook book with some simple recipes. If you must buy something in a can - like beans- buy those in water without added salt (Whole Foods sells their 360 Brand that is configured this way). And finally surround yourself with supportive people:if you’re overweight and you tell people you are a vegan, some people may give you side eye because “you don’t look like a vegan!” I went through this so I know. Kcuf them!!! You are on your own personal journey toward amazing healthy and you need people who are supportive not critical. Good luck!!

Good info brother Gabriel. I lost weight on low fat high whole food carbs before. It worked well. I Forgot how well it worked. The key is to get half full on high fiber cruciferous or leafy greens. We have a fullness sensor in our stomach and if we can fill up on low cal whole plant foods we are good to go. :-)

I've tried 'em all and this IS the diet that I'm healthiest on. High carbs work if the fat is kept low. My blood sugar is fine on a high carb diet...but when I add fats (nuts seeds oils dairy eggs) my blood sugar becomes an issue.

J. Matthews stay away from carbs with blood sugar issues. Carbs are a fat sponge, absorbing sugar water and salt. When u have high blood sugar your body goes into fight or flight. Lack of sleep because of all the sugar is the worse thing. Cut the carbs out of your diet

I’ve been trying to go whole food plant based for awhile now. It was hard to change my thinking that “fear of carbs” that is really the general mindset when it comes to losing weight. After two years of researching I can see that a whole food plant based lifestyle is the healthiest way to go and those potatoes and whole grains are so sustaining!

I need knee surgery, but the doctors won't operate as I weigh too much. They suggest gastric bypass. I don't think I'm a candidate for it, and have begun a Vegetarian program. You inspire those of us who need to re learn eating! Thank you for the video.

Thanks Gabriel. That really makes sense . I have lost over 60lbs so far ( another 18 to go) and salads are a must for me. I actually found that grains hindered my weight loss and swapped to potatoes but still tend t have a fear v them. I do eat them but as many as I would like. I do have a fear I may over do it . I tend to eat more legumes rather.

Wow it's funny you mentioned that. I was doing fasting and basically one meal a day for a while. I have a lot of food intolerances so I was eating instant mash potatoes with vegan butter. I was losing weight immediately. I react terribly to pasta and baked goods. So your comment makes me wonder if I only ate potato and vegan foods would I lose weight? When I was vegan before only a few months I lost 17 pounds. I keep reacting to grains which causes inflammation. Your comment is like a light bulb went off in my head.

Thank you so much for sharing this its so inspirtation. I wonder- did you use any oils or fats in your cooking of, say, your beans or rice? Or did you just completely eliminate added fat from your diet? I've heard that our body needs a bit of fat to absorb the nutrients from vegetables and that we can have bad affects on our brain healthy, skin, etc, if we dont have ANY added fats. Appreciate your thoughts. :)

Hi Gabriel, I'm excited to start a journey to plant based eating. I have some knee surgery coming up and will be depending on my husband to care for me. I'll prepare foods ahead of time, to keep things easy. A question for you..., I'm already fairly close to plant based, I just need to eliminate meat more completely. Also, quit the dairy more completely. I do eat eggs and don't want to eliminate those. What do you say about that? Also, how frequently do you eat? Three meals with snacks 2 or 3. Man.. nuts seeds nutbutters and nutmilks are what sold me on a plantbased lifestyle. It'd throw me all off to take them out. I literally have two cups a day!

Hour long did it take you to feel like you were good at it? And how long did it take you to lose the 100lb? I'm about 50lb over where I want to be and I'll be starting a wfpb lifestyle in a few weeks (at least mostly) and I'm petri excited! I've been wanting to try this for a a couple years, and more I'll be moving to graduate school and can try it out!

I did keto for a few months and lost 20 pounds but I couldn't lose anymore after that. So I gave up and instantly gained 10 pounds back. I'm now trying a plant based diet . I'll come back with results in a month or two

I also lost about 90 lbs having gone vegan and it's absolutely changed my life. While I am still diabetic, my A1C has gone from a crazy number of 12 to a 6 which is insane to me. I used to be insulin dependent but no longer and I feel better than I ever have.

I am leaving the ketogenic lifestyle into a plant based diet and I am gaining weight. I am very discouraged over this. I don’t want to go back to a low carb diet. I want to continue eating plant based but I’m so scared to continue gaining weight. Can you suggest anything that I can do to stop the weight gain and still be satiated? Thanks!

When you start eating carbs, water weight will come up, but it’s just water and glycogen and not fat. Don’t be afraid, you may gain 5 pounds of water, but it won’t go higer and it really is just water. If you don’t eat carbs for 2 days it will go back down immediately, and if you start eating carbs agan it will go up. But again, it’s just water. :) I had the same

Love your channel! I'm not vegan but my dad is and I am reducing my animal product intake. The vegan pork burgers are in the oven now! Also, make sure to get your oats organic! All non organic are sprayed with glysophate...super vital. Just wanted to let you know :) If you can, organic is one if the most important health decisions!
