i just adopted a dog and i've been watching Zak's videos and i'm almost half way through his book. I really enjoy his style of training--no dominance nonsense. my pup has been in a shelter for the whole year she's been alive and there was a lot of anxiety around walking outside the house. she would only go a few steps and then stop and stare with her tail between her legs. Zak taught me how to be extra patient in these situations, to look for cues of anxiety but also progress, how to reward the behavior i liked one baby step at a time. within one week my pup and i are walking confidently the 2 miles to and from work and she couldn't be happier! (Now it's just time to teach her to settle around other dogs while we're in the office--what great timing for this specific video!)

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not an evil person, but I'm SO GLAD that your puppy isn't just automatically perfect all the time. I can't tell you how many times I've watched videos about "this is how you xyz your puppy". Then I do the xyz and it might work, and then stops working, or just never works. Your videos have helped me to be patient and understand what it really takes to train any dog. Right now my 10 month old corgi is completely ignoring the come command when we're outside. He's hyper focused on anyone or anything or smells or sounds, everything except me and it's driving me nuts. So back to more inside pay attention training.

When I was training my puppy to behave and focus in public I always felt super embarrassed in the beginning because I was afraid of others opinions of her super energetic crazy puppy attitude. How do you gain the confidence to go out and train your puppy in public? Am I the only one who feels awkward, even though I know it’s necessary?

Riley Madison i know how you feel .i used to feel like that but when training a puppy you need to ignore other people most of the time they will stare at u because they wonder what you are doing but u should never feel embarrassed because at the end of the day your gonna have a well mannered dog while other people are going to have crazy wild dogs . so never feel embarrassed.

It is so interesting to see how the working dogs learn and grow. You can clearly tell she is a border collie simply by her nipping habits! I have a friend who uses the old "I have to be the alpha dog and pin my dog down to get him to listen" approach to training (spoiler alert- his senior dog as zero manners, go figure) and says "you cant train the instinct out of them!" Well, here is a good example how - and its not about "getting it out of them" its truly just the trust and communication and bond of dog and human. Love it. What a treasure you are for dogs everwhere, Zak!

Hello Zak am a 65 year old lady prospector I was gifted a 3\4 Border Collie 1\4 Australian Kelpie. Wowzer talk about a smart energetic puppy. The first time I played fetch she did it perfectly. When I threw the ball again she wouldn't drop it. She pretty much said if you want it you gotta take it. Fetch was too boring she wanted something more. So we ended up with a tennis ball on a knotted rope. This is her favorite toy she loves it so much that when Jack a small mixed breed comes to play she ignores him. This was a 3 months old. She learns so fast it's hard to keep ahead of her. I want to thank you for your videos. I have made a lot of mistakes but Chicky is very forgiving. I live in a tiny diy house. So no room for a cage the only time she is off the leash is when we are in for the night. I Especially appreciate your video on going out a door. I live in the country so there are coyotes that come out at night. It's very important to me to make sure they aren't on my yard before we go out. Once out side she will tell me if it's safe. Thank you again for your great videos. She is 4 months old and doing pretty good thanks for your help. Ms Michal 😊☕ I wish I could send you a picture because she looks more Kelpie than Border Collie. Have a great day.

Tiffy’s advice is good. Make sure to have your puppy stop and sit far away as the person is walking towards you. Have her in a sit before she gets focused on the person. Then, the FIRST time your dog shows interest/looks at the person put a treat in front of their nose and lure up into a look command. Treat, then quickly repeat. If possible, have another treat in your hand and say look right after you treat the dog. The goal there is your dog doesn’t look down or away after you reward her. After a while, your puppy will realize you want her to still look after she gets rewarded. If your puppy is still struggling once the person gets super close, just keep a treat in front of her nose (with her head facing you) so that she isn’t focused on the person. Let the puppy nibble a bit on the treat also to keep her attention.

Hi Zac! I have a question but first off let me begin thanking you for posting this amazing content, I'm expecting to have a puppy next year, i'm trying to soak in as much knowledge as possible to be a good dog owner and these series are being extremely helpful. I've understood that there are 3 types of positive reinforcement, treats, play and "affection". It seems like you rely heavily on the first one, use the second one as an alternative but rarely use the third one. You do say good girl and compliment her but I mean enthusiasticly petting and praising as a strong reward. Is there a reason? Do you find it less effective?

Question! I have an 11 week old puppy and we were told by the vet not to go out in public grass until 16 weeks with him not being fully vaccinated. Do you think this is accurate? I have seen you take your puppy out to several places and I don't want to hold him back during the socialization period at all.
@itsmesteph86185 жыл бұрын
Audrey L I had the same issue ... it’s definitely accurate. If you have a private back yard that’s okay.. and also you could take the puppy maybe to a friends/ family house who’s pet friendly. Or also they could visit you at your own house.

Do you have any tips or videos for dogs with very low prey/play drive... I got a dog recently ( 1 yr old romanian street dog ) and he already does listen very well.. good on the leash and comes when called. However he doesn't really care for pulling on a toy or playing fetch.. he rather just run around or play with other dogs.. I can get him to sit but even then he loses interest in the treat rather fast.. He is a central asian shepherd hybrid so he can be quite the stubborn one.. but considering he's only been with me for 2 weeks I am still proud.. but I would love to play fetch with him.. I can get him to chase a stick as long as I am holding it but if I trow it he might go after it and lose interest before even reaching the stick.. Inside IF he goes after a ball or a toy he just grabs it takes it to his bed and if I call him before that he'll just leave the toy..

Hi, if your dog is urinating when they see people, you need to keep the greetings calm. I'm guessing when your dog greets someone they get a big fuss and this gets them very excited? Although it's hard, you want to ignore your dog until they calm down and then give them small, calm moments of attention. If they jump up just turn your back. Try and also take them outside when you get home to reduce the chance of urinating happening indoors. Hope this helps

Yea, we been trying this. Sometimes he doesnt sometimes he still does. Like today. He was calm laying on the bed, I'd been home for awhile. Went topet him and he started urinating.

Magic Jade this works really well if your dog is into tug. Throw the ball, when the dog catches it and turns to run back to me I wiggle a tug toy at their eye level while walking backwards to trigger their chase reflex. When they drop the ball into my hand I say "yes" and we tug for a few seconds before I throw the ball again. You're basically rewarding the retrieve with an even more valuable currency. Another good tip is to train fetch in a corridor or a hallway so your dog doesn't have a way to dodge around you.

She's so good. At the least all the dogs I've been around would have ignored everything if a bag of training treats spilled lol. I've started sit pretty with my 4 month old rough collie pup. I think it will take her a while to perfect it.
