As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

thanks for showing the tantrum. my pup does that when she's tired instead of napping. she will start getting nippy and walks around like a drunk sailor, stumbling on toys, barking at everything. I thought she was aggressive and thought pups would just fall asleep when they were tired because that's what you usually see. turns out she's not aggressive, just a toddler!

I love this series. It's so comforting to know that even an expert trainer can have a goofy puppy! My puppy Princess is such a goof ball and I've had so many positive experiences with trying to get our communication down! Sure sometimes it's frustrating to me but I also think about how frustrating it is for my puppy!! I don't see these hiccups of unwanted behaviors as bad anymore, rather I just need more time and patience for my puppy because I can tell that she is trying. Love you guys so much and thank you for the guidance with my first puppy ❤️ 😁

How to convince your parents you need a puppy? Everything Zak said, then I would add how about offering to raise a puppy for a service dog organization. You might be able to convince your parents, if they know there is a way out (12-14 months), some to all expenses paid by the non-profit, and a support network in place for challenging times. Google puppy raising in your area.

@2Fast4Mellow

Do you mean you're bed, on a bed for your dog? If it's your bed it depends on the size of your dog and the size of your bed. If you (and your partner) are in bed and there is enough space for everybody even during the night when you might turn (and maybe kick) during you're sleep. If you're single and you're dog is used to sleeping on your bed, you can get some resource guarding issues with your guest and the dog. This can even happen in the middle of the night. If the dog start biting during the night (for whatever reason), leave the dog off the bed! But just because it might not be a good idea to let the dog sleep on your bed, doesn't mean you have to crate the dog. There are lot of dogs that like to sleep under the bed. If the dog is under the bed and you wake up, call the dog from under the bed to avoid standing on the dog or that the dog might bite you're feet. Personally I've placed some dog pillows in the corner of the bedroom where I let my dog sleep.. Then of course there are also people that want to keep their dog in their crate during the night. One benefit is that the dog gets used of being alone, so you can easier train on leaving anxiety during the night because you're home.. But the most important thing is doing the thing that you like, you're in charge. Just make sure that you keep an eye on your own and the dogs safety..
@nickolastiguan
@nickolastiguan 5 жыл бұрын
IMO, you should get your dog used to sleeping in his crate first. Because if you ever need someone to baby sit your dogs, it is likely that family won't let your dog ok their bed.
@Courtdecor
@Courtdecor 5 жыл бұрын
My dog is very fearful of his crate due to whatever happened before I rescued him, he does sleep on his bed at night though. He prefers his own space at night but doesn't feel comfortable enough to sleep in a crate. We have been working with him on crate training for the past 3 years I've had him (he is 4). I think it depends on the dog. I'm getting a puppy in December and he will 1000% be in the crate at night. And we will see where that goes as he gets older. I like cuddling with my dogs as much as the next person but I think everyone having their own space is a better solution.
@YamishiTaicho

I actually put my pup's crate away recently. He's super well behaved and will sleep in the crate if I want him to, but he prefers not being boxed in (makes him a bit more sensitive to sounds and more likely to bark). Instead, he sleeps on a big spinning circle chair on the other side of the room during the week, and I let him sleep with me during the weekends.

I remember when my puppy had a resource guarding issue. It almost destroyed our relationship. There are few things she so craves. I gave her one of those edible Nylabone bones. She craved it so much she didn't want to give it up. That's when I thought it'd be a good time to train her on not resource guarding. Well, it went worse than with Inertia. I had never seen her act so vicious, she's normally a sweet little collie. When I tried to take it away from her, she snapped several times. She really hurt me, and I finally got fed up with her behavior and put her in her crate, in which I got hurt even more, and put the rest of the bone away. I was so scarred (in more ways than one) by that whole event and about how I treated her, that's when I considered giving her up. I thought I had messed up by punishing her (plus I didn't even look at her for the rest of the night), but my sister said I did exactly what she would have done. So she started her own resource guarding training with her and right away had better results. She now lives with my sister, who proved to be much better with dogs than I could ever be.

Hi Zak! My puppy is about the same age as Inertia, so I came across your vids as soon as I got my Aussie puppy. My biggest task lately is getting her not to pull on the leash. Will you be showing videos on pulling? I ordered a front clasp harness as I read those help & it helped my older dog as well.
@saramations
@saramations 5 жыл бұрын
how old was your other dog when you used a front clasp harness? how old is your puppy? i never found front claps harnesses to be usefull on puppies. they just never set up a good line of communication between me and the puppy, and i don't like the idea of having that force go across their chests.
@LittleMissDes94
@LittleMissDes94 5 жыл бұрын
My other dog was introduced the front clasp harness at 1 year old. He responded very well to it. We tried the no tug mouth harness but he didn’t like that one at all & it didn’t help & we stuck with it for quite some time to try. The older dog actually sprained my wrist on a regular leash from yanking me forward while walking so we definitely had to get the front clasp harness. My 5 month old puppy has not tried the harness yet as I am still waiting on it to be delivered. Part of the problem is we walk them together most of the time but since that is how we will be doing it because it’s much easier for us we want the puppy to get used to it. I’ve actually read that harnesses that clip on the back like why Zak uses on inertia encourage pulling.

I just got to the part where you were doing your Instagram live feed for the Q&A and I heard the question where you talked about how even if they were a high school age student, it would be pretty hard to train your dog. When I was 16 (almost 17), I got my first dog that was solely my responsibility. I went to high school and had a part time job where I worked at least 20 hours a week and my pup is now a fully trained service dog! It only took her 1.5 years to become a fully trained service dog so it 100% is doable with the right motivation and family support.

Resource guarding is of particular interest to me. Six years ago I got a poodle that a vet talked an elderly couple into giving up. He was 4 yrs old. Just about all they taught him was resource guarding. The man would take his toys, food and treats away from him and tease him with his cane. They were going to put him down because he bit the wife and she was afraid of him. They finally agreed to let him go and I took him. He no longer guards his dish but we still have trouble with treats and anything he finds on the floor. We have had success that when he picks something up, if I see it coming I also grab it. I don't pull on it, just hold it. When I tell him to let it go, he does. It might take a minute but he will let go. Tiny successes. I finally got him to sit but not lay down. He now walks great on a leash but rears up and barks like a maniac when he sees someone. That needs a lot of work.

My wife is recovering from having a brain aneurysm burst last year and her Shih Tzu cross seems to realize when my wife is anxious and helps calm her down the Shih Tzu is approximately nine years old and I would like to teach the dog how to be more of a service dog

I can't wait to see how inertia is in a few months. My lab puppy has gone crazy since about 6 and a half months lol. She's now almost 8 months and it's been a trying time haha. Just the initial exuberance that I'm sure all lab owners are aware of. She settles down in a few minutes, but boy, it's a long few minutes... It will be interesting to see how Zak's training evolves as she gets older 😊

Hi Zak, hello from down under. Love your videos. My 9 months olds Golden Retriever tends to steal toilet paper from the toilet holder or anything from the bin and if I don’t get it out immediately, she will tend to guard it and will growl and bite if I do try to get it from her. Any advice?

Is there anyway to slow down shedding during the main shedding season? I like Shiba Inus and have done a lot of research but my parents don’t want a shedding dog :/
@Sophie-xs6cw
@Sophie-xs6cw 5 жыл бұрын
Finn Ziegler really you would want to speed up the shedding during the main shedding season instead of slowing it down. Then you can get it over with quicker. If you’re going from cold season to hot, you can put a a light blanket on it and it will trick their body into thinking it’s very warm outside, which will cause then to shed out quicker!

When you were training with the confetti you used the leave it command. What was the difference when you were practicing with the toy. You used the command wait instead of leave it. I'm super curious, I love your training methods, I also love seeing you train her at the vets. When we have clients come into the clinic I always encourage this!!!!! So awesome to see!!!!
@eloconnor6841
@eloconnor6841 5 жыл бұрын
SUPERfabulousJess I think it’s because eventually she will be allowed to pick up the toy hence the ‘wait’ however he didn’t want her to get the confetti or accidentally eat it and so she was told to leave it alone completely

looking at decorations through the eyes of a man is like looking at decoration thought he eyes of a puppy. "I don't know what that is, but it's at puppy height, also this is at perfect puppy height, and then there's this... although not puppy high definitely very interesting for a puppy" Now remove the puppy from the equation and it's basically just a grown man wondering what the hell all of this is and how he'll have to clean it up later.

My puppy is literally obsessed with people so it’s hard to get her socialized. (She is a big dog and is pretty intimidating) and she is super strong and jumps on people too, she completely ignores me with other people around or even if she just hears their voice from upstairs. I haven’t been able to stop her jumping and being crazy around people and she is getting bigger and harder to manage too. I’ve been trying to work on it as much as I can but can’t seem to get her to listen even with rly good treats.
