I’m 20 years old, lost my dad about half a year ago and I am going to receive 350k inheritance soon. Would it be smart to grow my money in stocks while in college and then invest in rental properties afterwards, or should I go for real estate investing first?

Well agreed, investing with the aid of a financial specialist did the trick for me in barely 5 years. Retired with couple millions at 50. I worked hard everyday for 32 years and my annual salary was over 100k, enough to help me by far beat the retirement age of 65.

This sounds exactly what i am trying to do. i never knew what i wanted to really do in school. I went to an amazing HS with something called a Pathway. they had two programs in the school, engineering and performing arts. of course i joined the engineering pathway and for a while i wanted to be a mechanical engineer. i loved everything about it but eventually i changed my mind to architecture since i always enjoyed drawing as a kid. had an internship in architecture and took architecture classes that my HS offered. when senior year came i applied to Cal Poly SLO but wasn't accepted, not surprised. Because of that i changed my mind again to business. I had two years of tax preparation which was why i chose that. Got accepted to Fresno State for business and attended Fall of 2020. Was there for a semester doing zoom classes and loved it because school was never that easy. teachers always made college seem like it was going to be hard but for me it was easier than HS. I wanted to begin gaining business related experience so i began working at State Farm and that was a game changer. That made me realize i hated sales. Trying to sell a product to mee was equivalent to bothering people constantly. i hated it and didn't want to waste 4 years of my life AND thousands of dollars. So i finished up my first semester and never went back. In the mean time i had already been working at Burger King since the hour right after graduating from HS. I continued working there until i found out what i wanted to do. I remembered what a friend of mine once told me, "if you ever become a welder, i'll let you use my welder." I had no clue what a welder was but i focused my thoughts to that idea. i researched welding schools and ended up attending Advanced Career Institute. I loved the WHOLE experience. I just graduated on May 13, 2022 and had gotten a job as a welder at Bluescope Buildings North America starting at $23.43/hr starting pay. I started making $3,100 every two weeks working a lot of overtime. I met an amazing guy there who basically told me you need to have more than one income if you really want financial freedom. That stuck with me and realized that i have an amazing job paying me the money i need to find that financial freedom. I set up my 401k to save 15% of my paychecks, i am now trying to pay off my consumer debts so i can eventually have more money left over to save. and to me, rn is the perfect time to begin investing since everything is so damn cheap and history has always shown that the economy always comes back. My plan rn is to save up enough to be able to make a 20% down payment for a home and rent it out to begin my journey with passive income. all this while still living with my parents to truly maximize my money. i am barely 20.

@Colby, The key is to know the level of risk you are comfortable with. Investing comes with risk and the need for long time horizons. I began with a fiduciary portfolio-advisor by name *Katherine Duffy Burke* . She’s verified and an ISDA member . Her approach is transparent allowing total ownership and control over my portfolio and fees are very reasonable in comparison with my ROI.

@Sebastian, Thanks for the tip, I lookedup Katherine using her fullname and she seems pretty tight and outstanding . I read through her resume, educational background, i went further to verify her on sec database and check for disclosure . She’s a fiduciary who will act in my best interest. So, I booked a session with her on her reachout-webpage & hopefully she replies soon

After watching almost all videos from the last who knows how long, I feel like I have sort-of clear plan for retiring early. I don't really care about money itself, I care about the stuff I can access with money. There are a few things I want, a car and an house. But the most important thing, freedom. Cars and houses are not fun if you don't have the time to enjoy them.

One of your best videos I think. As a somewhat older person, so many points resonate with me, buying cars, credit card debt, not saving, feeling trapped, and then as you say, when starting to improve yourself, those around you do their utmost to bring you down. The tall poppy syndrome is has always been a problem here in Australia too. Last decade I had over $30,000 of credit card debt, from excessive spending and a business idea gone wrong. Was advised to go bankrupt, decided instead to knuckle down and pay it all back. And I did, every last cent. Recently I opened my investment account and saw money sitting there, free money! From dividends! Wow, it was a great feeling. I've left it a bit late but nevertheless I'm moving forward. All the best folks! 😁

This is kinda off topic, but if anybody wants to getting into gaming, but doesn't want to spend $300+ dollars on the latest game consoles, then I recommend try buying a PlayStation or Xbox from a previous console generation or two. It may take a while to find one in good condition, but you could pay around half or even a third less than the latest PS5 or Xbox. Another reason is that the quality of mainstream games is becoming worse by the year, just look at titles like Cyberpunk2077, where they're rushed to get onto store shelves, but become glitchy, unfinished messes. Not to mention so many games are blocking their full experience behind digital add ons that'll eat more money from your wallet. Games from previous generations can go pretty cheap, like dollar store cheap at ma and pa game stores. While in one, I found Bioshock, Borderlands and red dead redemption for $15 each. A quarter of the price that new released games cost. And just because a game is older it doesn't mean it lacks quality. Do some research and try to find some beloved gems. A game released this year that costs $60 could be terrible while a $20 game from the last decade could be amazing. I once bought an original Xbox on EBay for just $60, and it came with controllers and some games. And since then, me and my mates play Halo 2 together every Saturday evening and have a blast each time. You don't need to spend a lot of money to have a lot of fun.

I’ve actually found that counter to the debt avalanche method, I used Dave Ramsey’s debt snowball and paid off the smaller debts regardless of interest rate first. My highest interest rates were so large of an amount (student loans) I was barely making a dent in them until I eliminated everything else
@ProfessionalGasLighting2 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting take, an economist would say that you would have to calculate the interest rate and the principal balance to see which line of credit actually costs the most monthly, then using the principle of microeconomics known as “opportunity cost” you can evaluate which is most advantageous to pay off first. A lot of finances that applies to small businesses also applies to personal finances, that’s why I loved my Econ and accounting classes so much, and I am a biochem major!

Right now I evaluate short time goals, or "reasonable wants". Examples for that are a whiteboard to sort out thoughts and use for planning, or an additional server that I can use to learn and build more skills in my profession (DevOps Engineer) and that can be repurposed later on once It won't help me in skill improvement anymore. Or a new phone battery to replace the old one (after over 4.5 years it's gotten quite worn out). Once that is sorted out, I see how much I'd need to spend on it and how fast I need it. Then I'll set a month for that purchase to make. If the monthly "wants" budget is not used, the rest will be added to the investment pot. Just today I was able to evaluate that I could reduce teh monthly budget for wants permanently by about a fifth (which equals to around 100€), as I won't have any wants that use up teh previous budget frequently. This makes me quite happy, as it helps in getting us closer to being able to own our own house, which is a dream of both me and my partner, and "the big goal". Aiming for that goal makes cutting back easier, and validates putting more thought into wether I need something and if yes, how good or expensive it should be.

Great advice as usual. It's always so disheartening knowing that the majority of these people who retire early or are "self made" ended up there because they had help. A startup. People to help them fall back on or ensure they wouldn't hit rock bottom. But life isn't that lucky. I wish I could have help, something to start up with, to pay for my dream of culinary school. But life isn't that lucky. Can't even begin to invest and make money when having no money, since you need money to make money. If I just had someone or multiple people to help me start up or achieve my dream, if I was one of the lucky ones. If only. If fucking only.

Your own doubt is what truly blocks your path there are many great videos on starting up a great variety of things with no help plenty of people just learn how to work the system to your advantage and I know you can make it to culinary school! Like Mark said, at a goal and make a plan. Just do your research and due diligence. Educate yourself now on credit too like he said it's helped me immeasurably in just one year I actually have great credit now and I'm super low income, for now. Just started up my own roth ira and investing for the first time ever after months of research to help me reach goals that had previously seemed unreachable. I'll be praying for you so your dreams can become a reality as well. You can do it!

Just had to give up on my side hustle after 2 years as I couldn't make any money selling on amazon anymore as the costs have risen too much, and at the same time I don't have enough spare income to invest in my stocks and shares isa anymore as I'm only making enough to get by, times are tough right now ☹️

Great story, wish I had this knowledge 40 years ago. I did the business thing but was put off investing by witnessing friends lose money investing. I did buy a property to rent out and did ok but talk about hastle with tenants and dodgy agents , gave that up and looking to investing now that we are in a downturn after a huge rally over the last 10 years I'm cautious still though because I'm already "free" lol.

When Mark said the saying that "Money doesn't make you happy was probably said by someone that has never been broke," it made me think of those Everclear lyrics: "I hate those people who love to tell you Money is the root of all that kills, They have never been poor They have never had the joy of a welfare Christmas."

Money doesn't make you happy. But give you time/freedom to spend on whatever makes you happy.

I dropped out of college because I think it was too expensive. A few years ago I thought that was the biggest mistake I made. However, that decision motivated me and I am now more financially literate than most of my friends. PS I help in my family's business and do crypto stuff. No pain no gain, no risk no reward.

HAHA. You drive around in a TSLA using a TomTom 🤣. I bet you have the announcements turned on aswell. I would struggle sitting in that car with you but thanks for the great financial education we all missed in school. Use the integrated satnav or Google maps on a phone (with all announcements turned off!)

It's for speed camera alerts as the Tesla doesn't have that integrated :) MT

@@marktilbury good idea, add value to TSLA by making the suggestion they do that. Google maps does that better than anyone though and I'm sure you can see that on the screen via phone?! People add to the map when temporary speed traps are etc. Nothing beats it! You need unlimited Internet on your phone in 2022 for sure. On three (3)
