Bible illiteracy is such a HUGE problem, both in and out of the Church. One of the biggest errors I see people make when reading/studying the Bible is looking at it through the lens one 21st century America. People everywhere need to understand that diligent attentiveness is a must when reading any ancient document. So when we read those "tough" books the Deuteronomy or Lamentations we have to ask ourselves certain questions like: "Who is the writer talking to?", "Am I putting this in it's proper context?" or "What does the rest of the Bible say about how I'm interpreting this?". Having been an atheist for most of my life I have seen so many people use and abuse passages to justify their lifestyle/agenda. Honestly, the person who keeps the skeptic up at night thinking is the one who cleared up their misconceptions by removing their cultural lens through a proper understanding of the Bible. You did a great job Becca, Bible literacy is something sorely needed in the church today. Praying for you

"Everything in the Bible is supposed to be there." Preach girl! SO TRUE, and yet I don't know if I've ever looked at it that way. I am currently in a season where I've realized if I want to grow in my relationship with the Lord that I have to dive deeper into parts of scripture that are harder to understand. @@acecadet8812 Hi Ace! I am not entirely sure on that, I would have to see what exactly the Bible says! I use this website a lot, and for the most part the Doctrine is from the Bible, of course it is not perfect because humans write the articles, but it is gotquestions.org and they attempted to answer the question, www.gotquestions.org/see-Trinity-heaven.html - whenever I read an article I always compare it to what the Bible actually says! But this may help us as we start to search for the answer in the Bible! :) Blessings to you! Love your question!

Ace Cadet that’s hard to know as the Bible actually never uses the word ‘trinity’, it was coined by an apologist called Tertullian.

If I could make a suggestion you should look into down loading LOGOS 7 (it's free in it's basic configuration with 2 translations KJ & FaithLife) but you can purchase others for $9.99 each ( I have NIV and ESV) plus a huge array of other resources. My younger son used LOGOS when studying for his Mdiv in Theology (and still uses it practically every day). Wonderful resource.

So refreshed to hear you say this. Like people have said here, bible literacy is probably the biggest problem in the church. As God says many times in various ways, my people perish for lack of wisdom. I often find it hardest that it's really difficult to have biblical conversations with Christians because most don't know the story. Not even diving into mind blowing truths, but just trying to make connections between how things in the past related to Jesus or us, it's basically impossible because people don't know any of the stories, and have no desire to catch up.

I love learning languages and one of the reasons why I study them is to read or watch something in its original language. I also studied interpreting and translation. Something always gets lost in translation. It's hard to convey all the nuances of a language exactly into another. So I totally agree that language matters (although I am guilty of never having studied any of the biblical languages). I also really agree with the importance of context, especially when trying to interpret the meaning of a word or passage. Great video! I really like that shirt and want to get it whenever it's available again (:

Old Testament is a mixture of Hebrew and Aramaic. As far as we know, Daniel 2:4b-7:28 is in Aramaic. See footnotes of your Bible Ezra 4:8-6:18 and 7:12-26 is in Aramaic Jeremiah 10:11 is in Aramaic (which makes sense as he is quoting a sentence) Genesis 31:47, a single word, is in Aramaic (and this makes sense) Also Jeremiah is in 2 forms and both forms are part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Septuagint (translated from Hebrew into Greek by 70/72 scholars round about 200BC -300BC) has Jeremiah 7/8th shorter and arranged differently and this version is part of the Greek Orthodox Bible. I am trying to get hold of this). Jesus is likely to have known 4 languages: Hebrew, Aramaic (and that is certain), Greek (common language of the Roman empire) and Latin (official language of the Roman empire). Biblial Hermeneutics is worth knowing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_hermeneutics Many newer Bibles have as their source: Nestle and Alands Novum Testamentum Graece Now on 28th edition, all in Greek There are 6 other companys that publish their versions See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novum_Testamentum_Graece and also the Biblica Hebraica from Stuttgart, Germany, now on 5th edition See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblia_Hebraica_Quinta and also previous 4th edition en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblia_Hebraica_Stuttgartensia

This semester I am in a Civilization I class and I was mainly excited because we study ancient civilizations and I figured it would help me understand the context of the bible and so far I have only had 2 classes and I already have found ways that the history we know fits into passages in the bible, it has really got my gears a turning. Like historians believe all people once dwelled in one place in Africa and then dispersed to other parts of the world. Hm... does that remind anyone else a little bit of a story in the bible??? it honestly is so cool!!! Right now we are learning about Egypt!
