I love this video! I've had 4 MMA fights now and the biggest thing that I learnt was that being on bottom isn't worth the risk, if your on bottom either sweep or stand up because it isn't worth getting your head smashed in. Also it looks bad in the judges eyes if you willing to remain on your back for a round. Sweeps and top pressure bjj have been the best for me! Great content man!

TinTeeth96 try the forgotten art of trap guarding. You can find it on BJJ scout.

TinTeeth96 I know bro, but for real though, check out some trap guarding systems, like Irish collar, rat guard or rubber guard. They absolutely work in MMA, Tony Ferguson is a beast at it.

@@paulbadman8509 I have got a rubber guard and I love it for setting up arm bars, the issue still remains of the MMA scoring system, unfortunately you just can't really win fights off your back, especially in the amateur ranks, with no elbows etc

TinTeeth96 I agree, imo judges should recognize effective control from the bottom as well, like Oliveira vs Lee. As for amateur MMA - I don’t know for sure, but from what I’ve seen it mostly looks like disorganized mess, no offense.

Chewey, how did your schedule look like when fighting in MMA? E.g. Monday-Kickboxing/ BJJ Tuesday- Boxing Wednesday- Wrestling/MMA etc! Could you make a video on it. Many thanks from the UK!!

You should probably get more repetition throughout the week. One day of boxing or one day of wrestling won't get you much progress in either of those. You'll need to put at least a couple hours a day in. A better schedule could be something like boxing and wrestling on Mondays and Wednesdays, kickboxing/Muay Thai and BJJ on Tuesdays and Thursdays for example.

@@luisdawnfinder3188 yep repetition makes progress. In my opinion, to improve in efficient time you need to do it at-least 3 days a week.

I made a long comment on one of Chewy's videos about Hulse and how Hulse became loopy. I know Chewy say it because I was one of the first commentors and he replied to other commentors that had less likes than me. It's sad that Hulse took the turn he did.

I’ve done loads of pure gi and no gi and the latter is soooo much more suited to MMA. Faster, slippery and less control.

That was awesome 👏, Chewy!! Really great advice - we often put on the gloves and it really does change things because you’ve got to deal with the strikes first, but then it seems the Jiu Jitsu moves are basically the same (but that’s in Gi). I’ve always thought No Gi training is best for MMA (no handles) and Gi training best for street (usually handles). But I’d love to hear your thoughts on that - also, do you think the cardio challenge is due to adrenaline dump?

Hey Chewy. I only have a Gracie Barra bjj by my house. I know they are considered a cult by most. But should i go to GB which is 5 min from my house? Or drive 25min to go to another school? I have Fabin Rosa bjj and ATT black boxx near me. Any help would be great

Hey man, I'm not chewy, but I think he's talked about it before in a video and would recommend just doing a free trial at every gym and pick your favorite. I looked up the instructor for GB Orlando and the dude's name is Mario Sims and he seems really legit. But also it depends on your goals, like do you want to get fit, for mma, for fitness, etc... I hope this helped

What about the false sense of security of the Gi? so many of these guys think all that transitions over and it doesn’t, also guys will stand out of guard forcing you into standing up and striking, also having the ability to block strikes from your back.

Hey Chewy what are your take on strength standards? Do you think that the classic intermediate strength standard are good goals to aim at for BJJ? 1.6 bw squat 1.2 bw bench press 2.0 bw deadlift 0.8-ish overhead press and 10-15 chin ups

Hey I have been training boxing for a couple years and I want to get into BJJ for the purpose of MMA and I was wondering how to go about it. Should I just train pure BJJ? I feel like in that scenario you will be in situations on the mat where you are relatively safe, but if striking was involved they would be pounding you while they are on top of you. Does BJJ generally show you how to protect yourself from ground and pound too? Or since you dont hit people in BJJ are alot of the techniques not taking that into consideration? For example when Im wrestling with my buddies and say I get on top of him, he's obviously not going to tap out from that alone so he feels somewhat relaxed. But if I was gonna start hitting him in the face then it would make him want to turn over and cover up and expose something I could take advantage of. So it would create a unsafe situation in a situation that might actually be safe in pure grappling if that makes sense.. Im just wondering if BJJ takes that kind of stuff into consideration and I will be trained to be able to defend myself against someone who is striking me? My goals is ultimately MMA and for self defense in real life. Edit: Sorry about my ignorance about terminology I dont have any experience really with grappling besides just club wrestling with my frat brothers at school lol

Not really TBH, if you're doing BJJ only, and say, someone has you in their closed guard, you could still strike them. Yet in BJJ closed guard would be considered a dominant position. There is self-defense oriented BJJ, but in my gym, there's BJJ and there's MMA. They have a great deal of overlap. Try starting with BJJ and then move to striking as well, then do some MMA classes to basically, mix the two if that makes sense.
