How in the world could you leave out the most iconic part of all? Where after Rocky cuts Drago, Duke says "You see!? He's not a machine! He's not a machine, he's a man!" while Drago ironically remarks "He is not human...he is like a piece of iron".

Dolph Lundgren (Drago) is actually Swedish. [You probably knew that.] He played He-Man in Masters of the Universe. In Red Scorpion, he played a Russian military operative who defected to the side of the insurgents. In The Expendables series, he and Stallone fought on the same side. Most of his work in later life has been direct-to-video. He's multilingual of course, is a black belt martial artist, and has a master's in chemical engineering.

1 and 2, perfect bookends. More dramatic, more "real" somehow than what comes ahead. 3 and 4, definitely more 80s with cartoony overtones...still wonderfully dramatic and entertaining. 5 stands alone as its own, for better and worse. And 6 ties it up all together perfectly. Thanks for all your Rocky reactions!

There is a fight that appears to be the one that is noted as changing the sport forever, 1982, for changing the boxing rules on how many rounds were sanctioned by different boxing commissions. Kim Duk-Koo from South Korea vs Ray Mancini from America. At the beginning of the 14th, Mancini connected with a straight right that snapped Kim’s head back and sent him crashing to the canvas. The Korean managed to haul himself up by the ropes to beat the count, but referee Richard Green stepped in to stop the fight. Kim coach and manager had been tending to his corner and missed the actual knockout blow, but when he saw Kim on the ground, he knew at once that the fight was over. “He was obviously hurt, but at that time we had no idea it was so serious,” he said. Back in his corner, Kim collapsed and was taken from the ring on a stretcher to hospital where he was diagnosed with a blood clot on the brain and underwent emergency surgery. He lapsed into a coma from which he never recovered and four days later he died. On the flight back to South Korea, a now traumatized manager locked himself in the toilet and “cried and cried until we landed. He thought about quitting the sport entirely. In the end, he decided to stick with it, but it was a very, very difficult time, he said at his gym where photos and posters of Kim Duk-Koo adorn the walls. The consequences of the Kim-Mancini bout were far-reaching and tragic in their own right. Four months after her son’s death, Kim’s distraught mother killed herself by drinking a bottle of pesticide. Four months after that, referee Richard Green also took his own life, although there was no indication that his suicide was linked to the outcome of the fight for which he was never held in any way responsible. Mancini, a devout Catholic, endured a prolonged period of depression and, although he fought again, was never the same boxer.

Dolph Lundgren who plays Drago is from Sweden and a highly accomplished, intelligent individual not just some meat head he portrays in film. He has a black belt in Kyokushin karate, graduated with a master's in chemical engineering and even got a full ride to MIT but chose acting instead. Speaks French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish on a limited level and fluent English obviously. He's good friends with Stallone and they played in the Expendables franchise together.

16:23 Mickey actually died of a heart attack. If you watch closely during Rocky's fight with Thunderlips, he was having problems breathing because he was getting overworked with all of his yelling into the ring. So when he got pushed by Clubber Lang, his heart rate probably started racing and it caused him to go into cardiac arrest, that's why the doctor says "Okay, let's start CPR"

To answer your question, yes. Boxers have died from injuries sustained in boxing matches. It's a major reason why most modern boxing matches last a maximum of 10 or 12 rounds instead of 15. They shortened the length of professional matches after a boxer died in the 80's and caused increased scrutiny in the sport's safety. Boxers also now wear bigger gloves than they used to for the extra protection. Also yes, the Russian translator was translating Rocky incorrectly. When Rocky says "Here you got two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than 20 million." But the translator says "...that's better than 20 million dollars." He totally missed the point of Rocky's speech. 😂

very 80-90s MTV style of movie with all the montages and the songs, just like music videos back then. So cool to watch movies and get time capsules like that. Fights now are a lot more supervised. I realize that this was a long time ago, but in regard to your concern about Drago saying "if he dies, he dies" a boxer's hands are registered as lethal weapons. It is part of what every professional boxer must do to get a license. Every fighter knows that he could die or kill someone in the ring. They also know that they have to be careful in public because if they fight someone, they could easily kill them and that would be murder. In the ring though, when boxers die it is not taken lightly. In those rare cases, changes are made to the rules to try to prevent it from happening again, but it is always possible. Professional boxers are signing away any rights they have if that happens.

"it looks like he's getting beat up in real life." He was. Stallone wanted the fight to look ultra-real, so in the beginning section, Lundgren is actually hitting him. I watched a fight between Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and Duk Koo Kim from Korea. They went at it really hard and eventually Kim got knocked out. But he was stretchered out of the ring and died right after.

Rocky 4 is my favorite. As for Apollo's death, he kinda brought that to himself. Apart from Drago, it was his ego that also killed him. And Rocky decided to fight Drago out of vengeance.

It’s my least favorite - hate the jingoism. But yeah, Apollo’s ego played a part plus Rocky delaying the towel throw.

You sign a waiver to box that it could be life-threatening but because he continued hitting after the Bell that's illegal. But (it's a movie) & yes people have died from boxing that's why they shorten from 15Rds to 12Rds

MY Grandfather was a boxer in college. A couple of years after he graduated, a member of his team killed a man in the ring. It wound up causing the end of college boxing.

In 2022, Stallone released a *Director’s Cut* of Rocky IV, getting rid of Paulie’s robot, and adding more dramatic scenes. 🤖

“It looks so real, looks like they’re actually hitting each other” just so you know Stallone wanted it to look real and asked Dolph to hit him properly and Dolph put Stallone in hospital, nearly killed him

Vasoline also makes the body slippery so the body blows are more likely to slide some, dulling the impact. 13:27 Kamilla imitates the Russian wife. LOL

Lots of interesting stories from this movie. For instance, they really were taking some hits for this movie, it looks real for a reason. In one particular shot Ivan (Dolph Lundgrin) actually knocked Stalone out. He came to on a medical helicopter on the way to the hospital.

I dont know how truthful they are but Ive read stories that Stallone told Dolph Lundgren to really hit him hard during the fight shots and he later ended up in the hospital with what could have been life threatening chest conditions...also heard they remain friends right until now
