I ended up with a 2018 Model s 75D. I was going to purchase a new Model 3 as I had a 2020 Performance, but it was taking way to long to get the White Seat models out. I was just looking for a good commuter car. So I went with the 2018. It only has 20K miles on it and I was able to get it for 33K. Very happy, but man you are so right in this video. The breaks are what I have to get used to the most. I was expecting 1 pedal driving, and definitely can't do that in this car. It took me by surprise. Now that I know my car is not "broken". LOL I'll have to get used to it. Thanks for the video. Know that even a year later it is helping!

Hey man. Great video. Im still really in doubt. I have the choice to either go for a used M3P 2019 vs a 2018 Model S 75D. About the same amount of kilometers (75-80k). I have (young, little) kids and wondering in which car i will have the most fun. I have a second station car, so i dont neccesarily need the extra space, but was wondering if the more luxury interior of the model S is worth it in your opinion
@sherwinm
@sherwinm 4 ай бұрын
In my opinion, based on what you shared, you may have more fun in the M3P. It's gonna feel faster and more nimble... for me. The charging speed will be faster when supercharging. If you have multiple car seats, the Model S may be more spacious and for strollers too but Model 3 has good trunk space, Model S is bigger though. You may also get more range on the M3P. Just depends on the battery condition. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

2021 long range plus model s or new tesla model 3 performance? they have the same price (model s being about 40k miles) what would you recommend?
@sherwinm
@sherwinm 4 ай бұрын
That's a tough one. The Model S will be a slightly bigger car. More range, although it has a bigger battery. I haven't looked at performance comparison. I think the other difference is the Model S ride height can be adjusted. There is also an additional screen behind the steering wheel. The new M3P will have HW4 and no USS, that's up to you on which you prefer. You will probably see more Model 3 on the road than Model S. I actually like the previous gen Model S interior than the current one. With that said, if I had to choose between the two and they're the same price, I would probably pick the new M3P over the Model S Long Range. It has newer technology, I hear the seats are better, I'm liking the new look, quiet cabin. I worry about the quality of the Model S and X. From my experience, it seems they are not improving the quality. But Model 3 and Y, it continues to improve. The Long Range has Insane Mode which is fun (based on my previous Model X) but on paper, the M3P will be quick as well. I haven't owned a Model S but I have owned a M3LR before and it was a fun car. This is not a recommendation but just an opinion, I would go with the 2024 M3P. Plus Ultra Red with white interior is such a great color combo in my opinion. Have you seen my test drive video on the new M3LR? kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6iVqKF5pLBqhLc

Higher vampire drain could be a sign of a "dying" 12V battery, but in general the older cars suffer from a bit higher stand-by losses.
@sherwinm
@sherwinm Жыл бұрын
My 2022 MYP and MXLR has been losing 7% SOC at night whenever we are in Las Vegas. Have taken trips during winter and more recently last week with night temps at around 65-73F. I thought it was the colder nights but vampire drain seems the same regardless of temps. Is that “normal” amount when not at home?
@FordGranada75
@FordGranada75 Жыл бұрын
@@sherwinm Winter time can be a reason for higher drain, but in summer it's strange, especially that it happens in Vegas. 🤔 I don't own a current Model 3 or Y myself, but I rarely to never read about high vampire drain of current Model 3 and Y cars in the forums, so I thought it wasn't an issue anymore and by looking at how the architecture of the cars has evolved over the years it really shouldn't be. Maybe Vegas has become the city that never sleeps? 😀

Haha ya I was surprised about the loss not changing due to season/temps. We usually bring the Model X. I dunno. Hopefully 12V battery still good. I’ve been seeing many stories of 12V just dying, taking the entire car with it with no warnings until the last minute.

Would you recommend a 2018 Tesla model s with 42k miles selling for 38k? No issues first owner .. I currently am going to trade in my dodge Durango for a Tesla
@sherwinm
@sherwinm Жыл бұрын
Right off the bat, you are somewhat downsizing. I'm not sure what the car will be used for. But one advantage is fuel savings. My cousin has a Durango SRT. All black everything - very nice ride. But he's getting around 15 MPG. A handful have asked similar question and one of my questions is what are you after from a used Model S that you cannot get from a similar priced Model 3? Newer tech, same if not better range on a Model 3. You can even get a brand new Model 3 standard range for a $2K more from inventory. www.tesla.com/inventory/new/m3?PAINT=WHITE&arrangeby=relevance&zip=92336&range=200 I mean the Model S exterior looks bad ass specially with the bigger wheels 😀

My first question is, what feature(s) are you after the previous gen Model S that the new 2024 Model 3 refresh (Project Highland) does not have? Off the top of my head, here are some things you can get with a used Model S (previous gen) - larger: a quick Google tells me 2018 Model S (196″ L x 77″ W x 57″ H) versus 2024 Model 3 (185.8"L x 76.1"W x 56.7" H) - lower price used: it looks like $25-35K depending on condition. not a bad price 2024 Model 3 Long Range - more range, even the standard range can have more range depending on the condition of the used Model S 75D - newer technology - has heated/ventilated seats - Model S may have older MCU2 hardware, extra cost if you want to retrofit - charging curve is better, will supercharge faster rate at lower state of charge In my opinion, if you are looking for a used Model S to maybe get your first EV or save money, I feel a used Model 3 would be a better value. Newer tech, battery could be in better condition, more range. Prices have dropped as new cars price also dropped. You can even get a good deal on used Model Y. So I think the most important question is, what are you looking for from the Model S that a used Model 3 or even new Model 3 or a used Model Y cannot give you. That's how I would approach it. Just my opinion. Hope that helps.

So, what does it cost to replace the battery pack?
@sherwinm
@sherwinm 10 ай бұрын
If you're beyond 8 years or 150K miles of battery warranty, you may have to pay out of pocket. Here is the details of the warranty. www.tesla.com/support/vehicle-warranty I haven't replaced a battery in any of my Tesla or my previous Prius cars. While at the service center, I overheard an owner pay around $9K for his 1st gen Model S battery. Others online have shared upwards of $15K and more. It could be depending on generation, size, availability?

Should I finance a 2018 model s or lease a 2023 model Y ?
@sherwinm
@sherwinm Жыл бұрын
What are you looking for that a new or used Model Y can't get you? The Model Y will probably give you better range and newer technology. Doing a quick Google search, it says the Model S will give you more leg room in the front. I found a quick comparison in terms of numbers but it's comparing the 2023 versions. Model S is longer and wider but the Model Y is taller. I'm not really sure what your use case would be. If it were my primary car, I would go with the Model Y. I've had many sedans in the past and prefer to go with mid-sized SUV or larger. That's just me. I like to sit higher and I feel there's more utility out of the Model Y - not to say that the Model S can't be used for carrying things or hauling. If you go with a used 2018 Model S, check the battery condition and options for extended warranty. Many have reported issues with Model S and X compared to 3 and Y. The only reason I don't go for lease is I drive a lot.

@sherwinm
@sherwinm Жыл бұрын
I really liked driving the 2018 Model S. I liked the interior. Here are some things to consider. The first thing I would look at is the cost between this and a Model 3. What features does this Model S have that you won't find in a used Model 3 or a new Standard Range Model 3? The Model S is larger. The one I got as a loaner looks really good. I miss having the sun roof. I really like the interior. But as I mention in the video, there brake hold is not the same as newer Tesla. This affects the one pedal driving. The performance is fine if you have never driven a Tesla before but coming from a Model 3 Long Range, it feels like it's lacking. The Model S exterior looks really great. At first glance, the only way I can tell the difference between newer gen and previous is the black vs chrome and front fog lights. Now if cost isn't an issue, the next thing I'd look at is range. Not sure which battery size you are looking at. The 75D in the video felt like a Standard Range Model 3. I've only owned Long Range Tesla models. 75D has a 75kWh battery which is similar to the Long Range models but at 5 years old, it didn't feel/seem as efficient - could be battery degradation or just older tech and design. I would look into the condition of the battery. It should still be under warranty but for how long. Check the degradation if you can. I believe you can now purchase extended warranty now... www.tesla.com/support/extended-service-agreement If you can get a really good deal on one, I would go for it. At this point, the current owner may have already gotten the "usual" issues fixed with the service department. The only thing to look at is the battery condition. But if there's no issues and the price is good, why not? I met an owner at the service center last year with a 1st gen Model S. He was replacing a battery, $9,500 I think. Other than that, I've seen/heard plenty of Tesla owners online who have driven over 300,000 miles with the original battery - 2018 models and newer. I would check the Tesla forums. Many share their high mileage stories there. Here's a good place to start - teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/forums/model-s.73/ Ultimately, in my opinion, if I could get a Model 3 for a better price, I would go with the Model 3. I'm a bit bias since I spent more time since I owned one before and it would be more of a practical purchase for me. But if I had extra cash lying around, I would buy a used Model S - specially the one I drove in the video. I wouldn't use it as a daily driver but a weekend car for sure. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your feedback. I apologize if you misunderstood what i was sharing. This video was meant to show how great this car is even though it's years old and previous generation but it does have its shortcomings because of its age and newer technology. As for the brakes, i didn't say it wasn't good but it doesn't support one pedal driving... which I prefer being an owner of newer tesla cars. If i'm not mistaken, one pedal driving was introduced to 2019 Tesla models. I am aware it's a loaner vehicle and don't expect new or used car for sale to be the same. The video is not meant to spread negativity. More than half the video, I praised the car. The only thing I said was if you can get a used Model 3 or Y at a cheaper price, in my opinion, it's a better buy.
