This Angelina Jordan reaction is genuinely my first time ever seeing this performance of "I Put A Spell On You". Before this I'd only seen Angelina Jordan's live performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" on America's Got Talent. Even knowing that she had a good singing voice as a teenage, I wasn't really ready for the deepness of her voice here. My reaction says it all really.

To answer one of your questions-yes, she listened to jazz and blues as a very young child, but her nickname of the girl with a thousand voices is only a slight exaggeration. She sings five or six genres as authentically as this one. And, yes again, both songs you heard were Angelina’s own arrangements-even this at nine. Her voice now is phenomenal, mesmerizing, and unique.

She arranges her own music!! At the start of this vid you see her handing a note you a man. This note show changes she'd like the band to play!! At 9 yrs old!! Mind blown!!! She's quite a prodigy in music, intsraments and language, of course, as well as singing!!! She was incredible then and she's so extraordinary now!!!

Her foundation is in jazz and blues. She arranged this song from the 1956 original by Screamin Jay Hawkins. She took his more theatrical version and made it into a more jazzy piece. She loves to do these retro songs by many of the jazz and blues greats of history, often as a tribute to them.

You really do not undersand her talent until you explore the fact that she wrote this arrangement. One would expect that she would have covered the most famous version of the song by Nina Simone.. She went back to the original version by Screamin' Jay, borrowed the attitude and various elements, , and then reinterpreted it so that it is somewhat of a cross between Niina Simone's version and the original by Sceamin Jay. She wrote a stunning arrangement at 9 freakin' years old. Please, someone, , find me an eample. of another Child singer who was capable of doing something this sophisticated at 9.

Another thing that's so amazing about Angelina, apart from what you noticed, is the emotion in her singing. There are more child prodigies that can hit the notes and have beautiful voices, but what their singing often lacks is emotion and texture. Not so with Angelina Jordan.

Angelina 9 yo. Look at her! She controls the entire recording. She has the power and ability to carry this out. The fact that she then has an outstanding fantastic voice and theatrical body language only makes everything even better. The musicians are also amazingly good. They give everything to complete this masterpiece! This little Norwegian girl reads the English lyrics while singing! She is from Norway and they speak Norwegian there. English is Angelina's 3rd language! Already at 5-6 years old, she understands exactly what is meant in the lyrics! Incredible! A genius at work. I am so happy for everything she gives me. / a Swedish Viking.

A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. In the band, she was called a boss.

Someone already must have told you that she won Norway's got talent at 7 years old. She sang like Billy Holliday, the song Gloomy Sunday. In the 50's Rick Nelson put that song on one of his albums. That took some of Rick's fan by surprise because it was originally written as "The Hungarian Suicide Song". I was surprised that Angelina's parents let her sing it, because when translated into English both Billie and Rick sang it word for word. Rick Nelson was a lot easier to understand to understand the words. It's really creepy. The Judges asked Angelina if she knew what the song was about. Her answer was Gloomy Sunday? The judges were crying.

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 17 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. You just watched a Masterpiece! Destined to go down in Music History as the best performance by a 9 yr old, Period! Past, present & dare I say Future! I'd like to see anyone, young or old who can do a cover of this & with the justice it deserves as Angelina has done on every cover she does. ♥👣👸🏻

Great comments..you are starting to understand the capabilities of our sweet little powerhouse Angelina! It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne-type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and maybe throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers). This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXLOi3d3ja90aqc

It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. Thank you for featuring Angelina again, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZbin, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I get Janis Joplin vibes, even the bare feet were there. Touch of Nina Simone in the song, too. I know Angelina's older now but I've only seen this so far. I hope she's going the Joplin-Simone route because with her voice she'll slay it. I'm a guitar nut, I love rock, I love metal and blues but I think that voice could revive that female vocal sound we don't have any more. Imagine a big orchestra sound, blues guitar and that voice.

It might help to clarify in the video description that this reaction was originally recorded in December 2021.

Your comment about "nice piano" is interesting. The note you see Angelina hand the conductor at the start of the video, is her handing over her instructions on how she wanted the piano part to be played.

What inspires a 9 yo girl to cover Screamin' J Hawkins, "Put a spell on you"? Little known is Hawkins background as a classically trained opera singer turned to blues and jazz. While having a great voice and doing some creative songs, Hawkins never quite rose to equal his contemporaries. Hawkins Spell morphed to "shock theatrics" and changed his fortunes. “Screaming" J went on to perform domestically and internationally. His "Spell" creation is rated as one of 500 songs that changed R & R. If you haven't heard it here is the link (Original Spell version; lyrics only kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmPGlaF3itumrZo ) AJ paid homage to Hawkins by doing a black and white film representation, typical of the era. She is shown holding the lit votive candle , then goes on to produce her very strong, emotionally charged arrangement of "Spell". I have never seen a (homage) cover presented with that this kind of "authenticity" and respect to the original. AJ resurrected Hawkins as she resurrected many songs from other 40's, 50's & 60's jazz greats. Screaming J is smiling down upon AJ. AJ's " Spell " cover version is EPIC , will stand the test of time, and rate among the best covers made of “Spell”. AJ should never repeat that version ... let it stand alone for what it is, forever. We can all look forward to music's future knowing that the bar of excellence is raised. Thank you AJ for what and who you are.
