How James Corden Went From "Lovable Brit" to Intolerable Brat...

James Corden known by many as The Late Late Show host found himself to be called out by the internet on an iconic Reddit post on r/IAMA.
He has had a wonderful career with a lot of exposure and opportunity. Known very well for his hit comedy series Gavin and Stacy in the UK, James had a quick rise to fame and was found to be well-favoured by the general public.
It wasn't till later where his true colours were shown as many people came out to share their experiences meeting meeting him in person.

thing is we have 2 uses for the word. We can use it as a term of endearment or as our worse insult. Calling someone a cunt in a cheery tone shows a strong level trust and familiarity between friends, calling someone a cunt in an aggressive or passive aggressive tone indicates a deep hatred. There are a few individuals who particularly garner the latter response, Corden is one of those individuals. That and a few other choice words. For the likes of Corden its usually a few more. And honestly, usually with people like him its not even cunt, cunt isn't good enough to get across our hatred.

I think part of the issue was transitioning away from playing characters to playing himself. With Gavin and Stacy, it was alright if his character was annoying sometimes, because he was still a well-written character that suited his performance style. However, when he started making himself into a persona as part of presenting, especially once the spotlight was put directly on him with the Late Late Show, that's where his less likeable traits began leaking through. Now every performance he does feels like a variation on himself instead of a character, and people keep letting him improv when he's not that great at it imo.

I think this phenomenon must hit late-night hosts particularly hard. Kimmel, Colbert, Corden, Fallon, and Seth Meyers were all pretty much universally liked back in the early days when they were just moderately famous. They all "seemed" pretty down-to-earth and generally likeable early in their careers but as soon as they became late-night hosts and got the big money, all of them became insufferable twats almost instantly. Then again, Craig Ferguson became more likeable when he got his show, so maybe he's the exception to the rule. I wish he was still on.

I think the problem is that James Cordon was about 6 months away from losing relevence here in the UK when he made his move to America. From what I remember his panel shows were slowly but surely getting cancelled and his short lived TV & Movie comedy career here in the UK sank like a lead baloon after Gavin & Stacy ended, going in on such memorable projects as "Lesbian Vampire Killers" with G&S co-star Matthew Horne. While Cordon had managed to transition to panel show host for a few years here in the UK with shows like A League of their Own, that wasn't going to last forever. In short, Cordon's move to America was one of desperation and not well thought out, and as such he's basically wrapped himself in this America-friendly persona that most Americans actually hate but the network executives love and over time Cordon has just lost his soul to the American media machine, doing anything to stay relevent.

If you watch back his panel show appearances like 8 out of 10 cats or big fat quiz of the year, his sense of humour has always been rather mean and childish, with the inability to deliver the jokes well. Having him side by side with actual comedians he always came off as a dick because he just did what made him a spectacle rather than the usual British comedy which is often self-deprecating or good-natured banter. He can’t even measure up as a TV host as he can’t beat Graham Norton who dominates that game or pass Conan or even Jimmy Fallon at their American segment-reliant and self-important humour. I hate to say it but he’s better off acting and even that wasn’t memorable. I first saw him in Doctor Who and very quickly forgot about him until he became mainstream and I was seeing Americans talk about him online. To his defence, he isn’t near as bad as Jimmy Kimmel or Ellen, who can’t deliver a joke to save herself. He’s always had American humour so that’s why he might have succeeded there.

After seeing him on TV more than a few times throughout the 2010s, Corden always seemed a bit annoying and his humor never really resonated with me - it felt low-brow or condescending or even downright self-serving, with him laughing at his jokes more than anything else. It wasn't until recently I began hearing about his attitude, and this video really opened my eyes to his awful behavior and why hatred of him is so widespread when compared to simple annoyance caused by most not-so-funny public personalities. In James’s defence (which is not something I’d ever thought I’d say) you sort of took the Patrick Stewart thing out of context. It started with Patrick reprimanding James on standing in the background and looking bored (which is perfectly reasonable tbh, James should have had enough respect to at least entertained, but alas) which, to James’s credit, he did apologise for, even if it was a little harsh. But then Patrick continued by making rather unnecessary jokes about James’s weight, which promoted James to get angry at him. In my opinion, I think both should have just kept their mouths shut, because there was clearly some sort of animosity between the two anyway that they shouldn’t have aired live on TV at an awards show. Again, I’m not someone to defend James Corden because I hate him as much as the next person, but I thought I should at least give more context to the Patrick Stewart thing. Regardless of the person, jokes about their weight is pretty much off limits, especially in front of a massive audience. Patrick Stewart could have easily dropped the subject as soon as James apologised for his demeanour and it probably wouldn’t have got so out of hand.

Back in about 2007/2008 I was working as a runner on various shows at a studio in Kent. One weekend our largest studio was used for the Radio 1 Big Weekend after party, which was basically a big rave for celeb types and those around them (and some ticket winners) linked into the Radio 1 festival of the same name. It was pretty messy overall, two lorry trailers turned into bars, little baggies left laying around, and at one point I was doing poppers in the green room with the band The Klaxons. A bit later in the evening James Corden arrived at the studio in a Ferrari with Vernon Kaye, tearing into the studio car park like they were boy racers outside of a McDonald's... They then proceeded to walk around the studio showing off the big bag of cocaine they had (as if they were somehow part Escobar) and generally being obnoxious twats (and that's saying something given that we had Pete Tong and East 17 there at various points too). It got so bad that they became the only 2 people to be 'asked to leave'that night, after that the rest of the night went pretty smoothly until about 6am. We did still keep finding little plastic baggies about for a few days afterwards though, even after the studio was converted back for the filming of Supermarket Sweep... But yeah, dude was a douche. Really soured me on him.

Sooo, being from the UK I think I should mention, which kinda was mentioned in this, that he was generally loved and I wasn’t a massive fan but he seemed nice, I enjoyed his roles in Gavin and Stacey (saw him in a few other things but I can’t quite remember, a lot of random UK tv stuff), he was, to my knowledge, a household name. When I heard that he was going to be a late night host I couldn’t help but think “Ah, yeah, that makes sense, he’s funny but inclusive, he seems nice and friendly, and non-judgemental”. First few times I saw him on late night and seeing his carpool karaoke I was thinking things like “this is actually really refreshing and a huge relief compared to other hosts who were often just bullies, sexist, fake, etc.” But as time went on it just seems he couldn’t handle it, and became faker and faker. Now with all these stories coming out, it just seems a shame. He is just a massive asshole and a let down. Recently at uni I did a collaboration with the theatre department and one particular person has had the honour to work on Into the woods (I think that’s the right film) and quietly admitted that James Corden was basically a big baby, late, needy, and unprofessional. On a lighter note, as expected, she also told me that Meryl Streep was the absolute pinnacle of professional and kind.

Picked up a group from the uk, they were all nice and I remember talk shows came up and I had to ask “was James a actor or something before he got a show in the states?’ They laughed and said no , they had no idea why he had his own show… he wouldn’t get a one on uk tv. Later I went to a filming as an audience member and he had to do so many reshoots of the simplest jokes and they weren’t even funny. We had to just clap on cue. Conan is legitimately funny, one take and that’s it, he riffs and talks to the audience between takes. James had no idea what funny was

I used to watch some snippets of his Late Late show on youtube and really liked him. That was also how I came to know of James Corden. Funnily enough, the more I watched his interviews with celebrities I was interested in, the more he started to annoy me and I still can't really put my finger on as to why that is. I genuinely thought he was funny and nice but I guess I started to realize how fake that persona was the more I watched. Oh and reading about all the bad encounters people had with him certainly didn't help. Let's hope he finds some help in therapy, at least he's somewhat aware of the problem and trying to solve it (presumably, we actually can't know how seriously he takes therapy. He of course could only be doing it to shut his friends and family up - wouldn't put it past him)

In terms of adapting to "fame", or in my case "authority" (I went from being a programmer to a university lecturer), it *can* go to your head a little bit being the centre of attention. However, the mark of a humble and professional person in such a position is how able and ready you are to keep yourself grounded. Yes, when I teach, I'm the centre of attention and an authority figure over my students, but I'm self aware enough to remember that I was once exactly where they were. Hence why one of the first things I do when I meet new students is to ask them not to call me "sir", just my first name - I'm not "sir" in my opinion. Yes, I'm very accomplished and know my stuff well, which is why I'm teaching it, but that doesn't make me "better" than my students. The more you treat others as equals, the better the response you will get from them, and in a teaching context, the better their outcomes will be. If you act like a self-important asshole, all you will do is alienate people, make them resent you, and kill their interest in whatever it is you do.
