After having tinnitus for many years, I have had to come to terms with the fact that it is part of me, and like people with other medical conditions and missing limbs, it was up to me to come to terms with it. I have been a commercial pilot for most of my life, and I attributed my tinnitus to intense engine noise from certain aircraft types. The condition has never interfered with my ability to function, and it did not hamper my hearing. My position is that I am only aware of the tinnitus when I allow it to intrude into my consciousness. My advice is to deal with it. There are much worse and many more painful things which could afflict you and your lifestyle to a debilitating and severe degree.

I'll say hopefully helpful. At the risk of sounding too grim, thoughts like, 'at least when I'm gone, I won't hear this gawdawful high pitched ringing ALL the time!' have crossed my mind at times. If you've had the loud ringing and temporary loss of hearing after being too close to a very loud boom, that's what it's like. I would give it between 7 and 9. And it's very hard to ignore, especially if I'm trying to ignore it. Hearing aids were no help, neither was my audiologist who pretty much shrugged and said there's no help for my tinnitus. So instead of looking for a cure any time in the immediate future, I'll see if I can find any therapy, in the interest of keeping my sanity.

Dr. Sarah has been very reassuring about my concerns around benzodiazepines and habituation, saying she has seen a number of patients successfully habituate who had been prescribed these drugs. This puts my mind at ease. Clonazepam was useful for me in the beginning and did help my symptoms for a few months before its efficacy faded. I am now slowly and safely tapering off with a physician’s supervision and Dr. Sarah’s amazing support. Wishing you the very best-we WILL get there!!

Helpful 👍 The crickets have been an important tool in my kit. I have habituated but it took a long long time. Never give up. As mentioned by James, healing isn't linear. It's important not to panic when you have a setback. Once you do habituate, even if you have a serious spike you know what to do. A couple of months back I stupidly hammered a steel pole in my garden and triggered this weird reactive tinnitus in my left ear. It's almost silent until I walk down the road with cars passing then it crackles like crazy. When the cars have gone so does the crackling. I am working on replacing annoyance with curiosity etc. I know I will habituate to this new noise too. Thanks James and thanks Ben for all the excellent videos.

There are ENTs who say that tinnitus has nothing to do with the ears, that it has to do with the brain. I have suffered with it since 1999, it started when I had a terrible cold. My hearing has diminished a lot specially my right ear. I have noticed that when I take aspirin, the noise gets louder. May all of us who are suffering from tinnitus be healed by our Wonderful Healer Yehovah the best ENT in the universe. Blessings of Shalom.

Here is what worked for me in one week. Trust me my left ear was ringing so loud I was getting worried. I started with hydrogen peroxide and I noticed what was coming out was blood red. My left ear was fine just waxy color. I continued every other day for a week and it cleared up. No blood red and it has nearly stopped. Only 1 week. I will continue and hopefully it will completely stop.

Very helpful vid. I have bothersome tinnitus for almost three months. I'm already using sound therapy, white noise and nature sounds. CBT and meditation seems also very important, mentalize yourself that you have to habituate, mentalize yourself that tinnitus isn't going to harm you, and gave time to the neuroplasticity of the brain actuate and diminish the awareness of your tinnitus. I guess i'm also in the middle of Stage 1 and Stage 2 of Habituation.Best regards and wish improvments for all.

It’s interesting to hear other experiences with tinnitus. I’ve had tinnitus for 20 years. My worst experience was waking up from a dead sleep with roaring tinnitus 6 to 7 out of 10 I believe. Lately it’s ranges between 1 1/2 to 3 out of 10 and I can mostly ignore it. When I’m researching new treatments it brings my tinnitus to the forefront of my thought and it’s difficult to get back to ignoring it again. It’s kind of a double edged sword. A good diet and avoiding foods or medicines that make it worse along with keeping hydrated and avoiding to much salt helps. Keep up the good work.

I'm finding relief, from TSC (Threshold Sound Conditioning) I'm 20 days into it. Part of his tinnitus is different to mine. I don't have pulsatile tinnitus. The TSC is actually improving my hearing score, as well!!!! I needed to run a fan every night for the first month of my constant tinnitus. Don't need ambient noise to sleep any more, after 21 days of TSC, now. I'm a musician of more than 35 years now, and went to hundreds of rave parties, as a young man, in the 1990's. The music at a rave, is very loud, and contains intense sounds not found in amplified traditional instrumental music. I had frequent but temporary episodes of tinnitus for at least 25 years, in both sides. In 2018, I was diagnosed with 3b non-small cell lung cancer. I have received chemo (cisplatin, a known side effect being hearing loss w/tinnitus) immunotherapy, and radiation. My tinnitus increased to more frequent episodes of louder ringing, but was not yet constant. -It became constant in the left ear, upon contracting the omicron virus, about 1.5 months ago. Doing the TSC, I have so far, noticed a decrease in regular constant volume of the left ear tinnitus, by a substantial amount, and the "chirpiness" has calmed to more of a lower hum, with occasional chirping sounds. my right ear, the tinnitus comes and goes, but stays mostly quiet. When I'm having a loud moment in my left ear, I listen to Treble's cricket recording for a few minutes, and it usually goes back to a quieter hum, for a while.

To start, Thank you Dr Ben for the great vids. You are helping so many people dealing with tinnitus it's truly inspirational! I want to ask if you have any experience/knowledge with efficacy of dry needling (similar to acupuncture I believe) for T relief and if it works with some types of T? I found online a Dr in the Tampa area (unfortunately too far from me) Dr Josh Hanson and wondered if you know of any others and whether it's worth trying for my bilateral T which is very high pitched (around 12.5-13k)..? Also do you have experience with the TSC app called AudioCardio and whether it is good for my type of T? Thank you soo much Dr Ben!

But essentially in this modern world unless you can control the above (and many can’t) Tinitus is always going to be with you…. That's all you can do with tinnitus. Learn to ignore it, otherwise, you'll go crazy. I've had tinnitus since 2016, when I lost my hearing from ageing. I just fainted, and when I came too, I felt sick, and the room was spinning. My hearing had totally gone. My son rang emergency, and they gave me medication for vertigo. It took my hearing 8 Months to return, but when it did return, I couldn't make my ears pop anymore to clear them. The ustationtube was blocked and wouldn't empty. I was left with very loud tinnitus with acute hearing. I've tried nasal washes, ear suringing the list goes on. Wearing a hearing aid helps, getting enough sleep and controlling stress to help a bit. They have now diagnosed me with meniers disease. The tinnitus is constant and doesn't go away. It affects my ability to enjoy music, TV, and friendly communication. Huey Lewis and the news has got it and can't sing anymore. Sending love xx

I’m glad that I watched this because I’m understanding that you want to still hear your own tinnitus . So do I need to turn it down so much that I can still hear my own noise?

Great question! We recommend listening to sound therapy below the level of your tinnitus. Your brain has to be able to hear the sound therapy and your tinnitus in order to habituate. Try not to mask your tinnitus with the sound therapy.

Colin, please call 988 right now. It’s the new mental health service (similar to 911).

Relatable . Back and forth from ER . Had an mri that of course made it all worse and of course it’s normal . Just once I’d love to hear I have something. Because this is insanity .

@@Christinesobsevations This was me at my most desperate, just the first 4 days of having it. I aquired it because of a patient assault where I work in an inpatient mental health unit for adolescents. I have since gained some progress, gabapentin seemed to help calm the noise somewhat, and my workers compensation Doctor is cool as hell..I said I was having trouble with any type of mental control and meditation because of my ADHD..He asked if I was being treated and when I said not currently he prescribed me Ritalin. I was rather terrified of taking it because stimulants are a no no with tinnitus..I did however and though it didn't lower the volume it certainly helped with my mental clarity and focus. Since then I've begun the process of "making friends" with the noises in my left ear.. I refer to the softer noise as my cricket buddies and the louder siren sound when it spikes as Cletus, Cletus can be an asshole but he often doesn't stay more than a few hours. There are times when I'm able to focus away and hardly notice it as much. I don't have the super anxiety and flight or fight response anymore and that's helpful. This is just going to be something I'll have to manage just like a diabetic would. I have benzos but I RARELY use them as I try coping skills for the daytime and nighttime, I've been able to sleep most nights without using them, I don't want to start sound therapy yet until I see an Audiologist so I listen to podcasts of paranormal stuff as background noise to help sleep. Don't give up, the first few weeks are definitely the hardest..Stay away from the reddit and other forums as they'll do nothing but scare you and make it seem as it life is over. If you're religious as I am, I've found great benefit to highly rituals of praying the hail Mary to help me relax..
