Wealth can be a determinant of competence, but the wealthy also bottleneck economies to suit their interests at the cost of the average person. He kind of raises a good point about people who have kids that wont really improve productivity of its society, but for a place like Japan, that seems like a rarity because of just how intense their work ethic is.

Also, many jobs are segregated by gender, so it happens that - for example - many Japanese women are stuck with other Japanese women and have no chance to find a partner even at work because of that. Too tired to go out after work, and no opportunity at work itself. It's the collapse of society.

This problem is not only in Japan. All developed countries have low birthrate. Because women with higher education and working make less babies. And some just don't want to be bothered with children. If you focus on native European population, european birthrate is also a disaster. The difference is that Japan has less immigration.

My cousin has a teenage son and a young daughter herself and when she last visited us, she was complaining about that. That politician had some brutal standards w As a nurse working in Japan, I feel like I have the right skill sets to be a productive member of society but simply "earning" more is impossible due to it being out of my control. I can be the best nurse on the floor but at the end of the day, my paycheck is in control of somebody else's discretion. I can work more hours to earn more money, yes, but that leaves me no time for a possible partner later in life. I am only 24 and most people tell me to relax since I am still very young but I tend to think about the future a lot and just the thought of not choosing between not making enough money for my children or not having enough time with my family sends me over into further stress w 😅😭

I remember, when I was staying with my wife at my brother’s in Japan, Japanese nurses were making about $16/hr in contrast to American nurses making roughly $50/hr. Demand of expected work hours and low wages and salary is not conducive to having families, let alone relationships

No he's not, he's actually 100% correct. If you're not making enough, as a male in the middle of a patriarchy🙄, then you are completely subpart. You're in no position to have a woman nor children; you would just continue to breed more subpar humans. It doesn't make sense. Throughout history it was only the strongest males that women would procreate with and that were allowed to procreate with women. Those same males would keep all the weaker males away from the women & children, and also keep them in check/subdued (hence more adequately & accurately earning these males the title of "protectors"). Using that politician's own words against him, the "work harder" response s a quantitive argument, not a qualitative one. Because if you need to work harder to earn more money, you will not have time left over to even raise a family with kids; this undermines his own stance. He's likely a nepobaby. Your wealth ultimately is decided by the quality of your salary (decided by your employer), not the amount of worked hours. More hours does not automatically mean more wealth. You will have diminishing returns as your productivity suffers from too much work with little rest & socializing.

regarding the thing about monogamy and incompetents procreating, as a Mexican i can tell you that unless you spend a massive amount of time reinforcing ethics and morals all you will get is either more incompetent people having poorly educated children or an increasing amount of single parents that will let their children become incompetent because they wont have enough time to raise them properly, you need to have a nuclear family to raise a children to be a force of good, or else you are gambling with the odds against you because school can only teach you so much and you need to come back and see at least one parent watching over you giving you a good example. (also smart people tend to want to procreate less because they put their career first and if they are working more they have less time to meet a partner and raising a child simply doesn't fir the schedule).

I understood that policy to be a less direct incentive. It's to normalize marriage. For young people to see all the middle-aged and older people around them are happily married so they want to do it too. Since young people are surrounded by older singles, then THAT will be the norm and the marriage and birth rates will only continue to fall.

The devaluation of the role of stay at home parents, which in my mind is the most honourable role that creates good future humans. Working long hours equates to more money which equates to more security, Wrong, it equates to more money for the government but less quality of life or hope for the nuclear family, in fact it’s the fastest way to eradicate the nuclear family, just go look at the statistics world wide. After watching comment: (I think fertility time lines need to be taught to highschoolers so they can plan their life knowing the limitations if they plan to have kids. I think this is a big failure of society.) Interesting video though, keep it up. While watching comments: 1:05 I think this answer was best: "I won't change my lifestyle to get married" is what I would consider the number 1 thing preventing marriage. But I do like the other answers of "I believe I will meet them naturally," which hasn't ever been the case. It’s tough for the average Japanese brothers I can feel their pain. 😢 I’m on Japan biggest matchmaking corporation IBJ for the past 4 years now through an independent Omiai marriage agency and I’m still unwanted at 35/168cm/8M¥ per year. 😅. I know it’s their personal choices but majority (80%) of the women who rejected me withdraw from the system, (10%) gets a serious match (potentially marriage) and (10%) stays around to possibly withdraw later.

Overall, Japan needs to acknowledge its societal weaknesses. With its long history and numerous challenges, the country will eventually overcome the issue of depopulation. The leaders and big business will have to face the actual problems at hand. However, one thing is clear - if they opt for foreign workers or AI and robots, they might as well bid sayonara to their culture. In my opinion, the global phenomenon of low birth rate is a symptom of a sick economic system borne out of human greed. That politician was definitely blunt, but there is some truth to his words. Look at Japan's current immigration policy: they are definitely only looking for higher quality immigrants. Notice how the requirements are more relaxed for folks with masters, PHDs, high income earners, etc. They only want the best. However, with the current Japanese work culture, societal expectations, and their large barrier to entry (mastering the Japanese language, etc), many potential immigrants (especially the higher quality ones) tend to prefer other countries (USA, Canada, etc).

it's not just that. High value immigrants tend to require respect (rightly so, everybody does). You wont get that in Japan being non-Japanese. Japan is just clueless when it comes to this sort of stuff because it was closed off for so long. This is the first real time in it's history that its pushing for immigration. They don't understand that educated people do not want to come live in a country that does not respect them. Also don't get me started on the wages here. Literal poverty starting salaries for even the most educated of people because of their stupid "seniority salary structure" basically you get paid based on how long you've been with the company, even if you're completely stupid and useless. For Japan to attract "The best immigrants" they need to radically change the way they structure a lot of their society and start respecting people from other cultures/backgrounds. Unfortunately, that's not happening anytime soon.

Alternately marriages need to be treated as important by governments. Incentives to marriage must be created. Hungary was able to bring their birth rate from the bottom of the EU countries to the top by reducing taxes on married couples. Reducing taxes with the birth of each child. Three children means no taxes for the family. How does this work for government taxation and budgets? Creating more people means more taxes in purchases and other forms of taxation than wages.

What I mean by this is Japan in the past had a issue that with these stricter laws or attitudes kept them strong but with changing times it doesn't work.
