I was brought up as a child in a liberal Presbyterian atmosphere of higher criticism, social gospel, and magnanimous humanism. But God was somewhat real personally but I could never get the relationship between Father and Son. Then entering into junior high, highschool, and early college I totally blacked out to any relationship with God. I found ..um .. other things that interested me in the 60s. Jesus became GOD to me the night I came out of my amnesia by His mercy. And I called out "Jesus, I'm tired. Take me home Jesus" humbled to the uttermost. No professors were around and I didn't know the NT at all. THAT night, to me, I know that Jesus became God. He's been God ever since. And I am sure He will remain God to me unto eternity. Thanks for reading.

Mr Ehrman Thank you so much...grew up in a Mission school in Fijis Christian dominant religon. Went to missionary school for twelve years...I joined an interdenominational. organization......from the on set I kept accumulating questions I wasn't allowed to ask or for someone to at least help me out of .. Your excerpts and lectures had not only answered those tough questions but but sense of God. I knew there was inconsistency and error and slot of cut and paste but no one to confide in. "Jumping in an open grave" was my first impression of Church & Bible as a 12 year-old refugee from the GDR in 1967. At 5 I had vowed to find out how & why we came to be. In 1995 our wedding gift was a large illustrated KJV that I scoured to find a name for our first baby. Living in the jungle on the Far North Coast of Australia, I prayed that God would send someone to teach me the Bible. The very next morning, a carload of JWs pulled up outside our mountain retreat and gave us private Bible studies once a week. In the end we were weirded out by this: "You mean, the same sermon is preached in every Kingdom Hall all over the world?". We were also surrounded by vegetarian SDAs who claimed to go to heaven by keeping the Sabbath - Sunday keepers were the Church of Satan. We were invited to the mansion of the SDA high priest (forgot his name) whose son had recently suicided. On this particular Sabbath, a tradesman arrived to collect his money. So the SDA high priest gave him an envelope with a cheque & instructions "Don't open it til Monday!" to keep the Sabbath Law. Belated, he then drove us all to Church as fast as he could, collecting a $200 speeding fine on the way.... to cut a long story, in 2000 I completed 4 years Theology, Ministry & Evangelism at an Australian Baptist college struggling to apply my own independent critical thinking. I ended up working in cancer research instead but listening to you Dr Ehrman, this little apocalyptic light of mine came back on. Although I believe it is unhealthy to be a pessimist at heart, my optimism is constantly under threat by dictatorships, global warming etc. I will keep listening to you with the expectation of something good to believe in. Thanks

He is laughing at mocking God. This will not abode well for him. By the way, he is a self proclaimed antagonist, and has publicly said in debates that he does not believe in any god...therefore in my book he is an atheist, of which in one debate with D'Souza he did say, that made him an atheist. So why on earth would anyone listen to him on God and the Bible....his mission is to mock and put down those of faith and blaspheme the Holy Word of God through vain philosophy and deceit of his father Satan. The man is a scab and he is the devil's mouth piece. Reply
@colinc892

@@diannemarshall9318 Why listen him? Because studying the bible in context is what MADE him an atheist. Most atheists are former Christians who really took the time to research and investigate their beliefs. I'm another example of that. Atheists often understand the bible much more than believers in my experience.

+Randall Gordon - Following the 'Yeah, hath God said?" opens the eyes to realize that you are naked and poor. There is no valid foundation for man to decide truth. If man want to decide about God's word he is mistaken. God's word decides about man. Only God's word is truth. There is no other valid point of reference. You should not follow a false teacher. It wouldn't make any difference, most Mormons already accept that there are tons of problems with the Bible, which is one reason many other Christian groups condemn them. Most of this stuff is conjecture, which is why he constantly says "I think... xyz". He could be wrong about lots of stuff, just like everyone else. To claim he's the ultimate authority would be silly anyway. Besides, Mormons believe there was a great Apostasy, so they would attribute much of this confusion to the fact that people have lost their way, not to mention the cycles of the Jewish thinkers being influenced by the same. Each time they reject the biblical prophets they sink into all kinds of conflicting ideas and beliefs, which is why new prophets appear to correct the errors, but they too are rejected and killed. At the end of the day, I say let people believe what they want and feel how they want, so long as their beliefs aren't violating the rights of others. If they are happy being Mormon, or Catholic, or Hindu, or Atheist, let them be and live their own lives and stop trying to make everyone conform to your ideals.

As clever as that may sound, it is both false and vindictive against the actual truth--- The Mishnah, the Oral Tradition of Judaism, had such a perfect consistency and integrity that it totally PRECEDED the written Bible--- and that same Hebrew Bible has NO VARIANTS in the world. Such venom sounds logical, but it is really based in vulgar hearsay.

I did really want to learn about Issa (Jesus) peace upon him... and you dr. made it enjoyable and clear. So historically... He didn't claim divinity, nor constructing a new religion. Furthermore he was not crucified, nor killed (at that event particularly). May you all find truth, so it shall set you free.

Dr. Ehrman has undoubtedly worked in this field for a long time and is a great scholar; my problem however, is the inconsistencies l find in his arguments sometimes . He has argued in many presentations that "we don't know what Jesus said; everything is lost ". Interestingly, he's indicating here (46) that there are ways scholars (including himself) can know what Jesus said in the "Son of Man sayings "by using the same accounts he has consistently claimed cannot help us to know what Christ said because "they are problematic ".

Those quotations at the beginning of the lecture, from John's gospel, can be easily explained without saying they mean Jesus is God. For instance, John 10:30 - "I and my father are one". In John 17 that same idea is applied to the disciples. They are also one with God and Jesus. Are they God too? No. You can go through each of the other ones and dismiss the idea that teach Jesus is God.

@Blaster Master Couldn't agree more, there's _a lot_ of context to ignore too, like, _thousands_ of years worth. The "flock", don't generally read though, (hell, not even their "good books"). It's really hard to look at all that history, and all the gods that came before _this_ one, and conclude it's anything but man made nonsense. "Oh no, but _this_ one, is the *real* one, no _really",_ ugh! _Will the real "god" please stand up?_ I can't even quite get my mind around the fact that SO MANY people, _still_ believe it is literal truth, it's very "Matrix-y", like they're all living in a dream world. I find religion terrifying, for that reason, that it mesmerizes so many, is just flat scary.

Hebrews 1:6 God the Father told the angels to worship Jesus. Why? Because Jesus is God. Hebrews 1:8 God the Father called Jesus "God". Why? Because Jesus is God. The trinity (Godhead) is Biblical. Jesus is God. Jesus is the Creator. Try applying Proverbs 3:5, 6 here....and then remember Jeremiah 17:9. Your heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.... Fascinating lecture, I never bothered to read the Book of Revelation since it was clearly crazy from the first few lines. Now I understand all these bizarre Southern Christian types with their obsession with the devil. In a previous lecture Dr Ehrman explains the added passages at the end of Mark...that explains Evangelicals and their strange obsession with poison and snakes. Things might have been much better if James hadn't published the Bible in the first place.

@thistle_boy 5 жыл бұрын
In my understanding, "son of god" refers to a righteous person, someone devoted to God. In Psalms Ch. 2, God says to David, "You are my son, this day I have begotten you." Elsewhere in the Hebrew bible, Ephraim, Israel, Ezra, and others are referred to as sons of God. The phrases "daughters of God" and "children of God" can also be found in the OT. In the New Testament, Adam is called "the son of God" in one of the genealogies of Jesus. And Jesus himself said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God". So to the point, God is the metaphorical father to these people who follow His rules and love Him. And they are His children. And as the other comment says, son of man means a mortal, not to be confused with the Divine.

Interesting point about dualism, But I think that Dualistic thinking made it's way into post-exilic judaism through the contact with the Persians since it resonated very good with the overall Jewish thinking and expectations. Jews were exceptionally good syncretists. Eschatology and angelology grew from that germ, and after 400yrs in the making, no one could wonder why Jesus and even Paul were eschatologists.

Mathew 1:22-23 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.” which is translated, “God with us”. It only took reading the first chapter in Mathew to refute his claim that the other Gospels don’t say Jesus is God.

This is an absolutely fantastic lecture and an excellent book, and I strongly recommend any of Ehrman's works for Christians. So much of what is shoved down people's throats in church is just watered down devotionals, not honest and critical examinations about the validity of biblical claims and church history. Christians never hear this kind of information from your average village pastor. Go read and hold yourself to a higher intellectual standard.

It's all about context. Jesus is referring to The Holy Spirit within him. Remember, Jesus states that he only says what God wants him to say. God is the Holy Spirit within Jesus speaking through him.
