As much as I feel sad for KP being an almost perfect dark BL. I am actually glad that the show was as successful as it was. The show's success let to talented people like Jeff, Bible, Perth, Apo and many others to venture out into their own pieces of work and shine. The show feels like a perfect example of created on malice, redeemed by passion and rewarded by questionable love. Moreover, if the show wasn't the success it was people like Daemi their co-writer would've gone on to prey on more victims without anyone knowing anything.
@tanae2905 Жыл бұрын
My main problem with Kinnporsche honestly was the mixing of tone and the lack of an overall story arc. When the main teasers came out I was honestly expecting a dark mafia thriller and in my opinion you can't really have that and not have an overall storyline. And when storylines and conflict was introduced they either; ended it really abrutely or just never came back to it. It was just really disappointing because they are really good cast /team and honestly I can't fault the show on anything else other than the writing. I think ,as you said, this was just poor management and a lack of direction. It's just kinda sad how this show is now seen as the "standard" when there have been bls and just shows in general previous that have done this type of style 10x better but they did have the budget Kinnporshe had such as Manner of Death or even 3 will be Free.

What a great video. I'll add that SA and the likes of it is a BIG part of Yaoï and BL culture for some reasons. Even in shows that have nothing to do with dark topics, you'll find instances of characters taking advantage of someone else, the most used, it seems, is if one is completely wasted or drugged. Kinnporsche's yo-yoing in tone really doesn't help to deal with these topics and continue a long tradition of implying that assaulting someone may reasult in love

I remember watching this show and enjoying it, but thinking “it’s a BL show with a mafia action story backdrop, but it’s not a story about mafia, it’s an excuse to watch hot guys make out. These writers don’t know and/or don’t care about how mafias work.” And when that finale came around, I was so annoyed, I hated it so much. Pulled out all the telenovela tropes in under one hour…

every rewatch of this video is so therapeutic to me, especially being someone who was so caught up with every episode released to have been so thoroughly disappointed was devastating. Finding a mature, justly critical and fair voice in the cacophony of the fandom is so refreshing. Also, I’m surprised you didn’t touch more on Vegas Pete toxicity, but that portion of the fandom is a bit dangerous to touch on, so ultimately i understand. ALSO the khaki shorts comment abt Gun was my own thought and the moment i realized the finale wasn’t going to give me what i wanted and what the story deserved. Always love your videos, and this was an AMAZING analysis ❤❤❤

I agree with your take on this show, the fact it made so much success and people talk about it as if it's an excellent series is incredibly bothersome to me. I think the worst part is: the show is promoted as a 'dark series' that discusses 'dark topics', but that just makes it look like it does a perfect job at handling those heavy subjects and the ones who don't like it just 'couldn't handle the tragic topics' or didn't get it, yk? Even though we should appreciate the quality of the filming in some scenes and make sure the directors know that we enjoy watching those beautifully done shots (just like I believe we did with ITSAY), it shouldn't be treated as the wonderful and perfect show as many say. Anyways, thanks for this video essay, it's always nice to hear opinions about BLs, since not many people talk about it here on youtube and if they do, sometimes it's just full of bad takes haha

Yeah, BL fans are pretty quick to glorify almost any show with hot leads and expensive cameras, even if the "story" not so much a plot as it is just a sequence of vibes for the main couple to have dates (or sex) in. Overall, though, even though I agree that it wasn't great narratively (and I dropped it somewhere before episode 10), I *am* grateful to shows like this for its ambitious concept and visual production, and for continuing to solidify the viability and popularity of adult couples in the BL genre (that tends to swing toward student protagonists and coming of age plots --which are also good, just a bit oversaturated).

I feel like this show tried so hard to be something that it wasn't (in the pilot episode). It didn't want to stick to being serious, action heavy, dark romance; like it should have. There are so many series like that, that are done well and succeed.
@schneemilee Жыл бұрын
There were many strong episodes as well as a bunch of weak ones. The pacing variated a lot, it was fast and then it was slow which dropped the excitement. For example episode 10 was strong and Vegas was the villain and Big died and all of that. I felt empty after this ep ended, thinking "what else are they gonna pull" what next plot could be as good. The problem is, there wasn't any plot as intriguing that followed. The show's energy grew smaller and smaller while hanging on to VegasPete. This whole reunioun with Porsche's mom and the way their pasts are intertwined was explained very quickly and it was a rushed scene to lead to VegasPete once again. I have a huge problem with VegasPete and it's all due to the pacing. Their story was squeezed into 4 episodes...why? It is so complexe but many things weren't explained and we had to figure them out. They could have talked more about Pete's trauma, about Pete's death wish, about Vegas' mom and what happened to her. All of that, we have to figure out without flashbacks. Vegas was the villain and with the start of ep 11, he was suddenly just his own enemy. I waan't having it, it didn't feel like redemption, it wasn't. To actually have a redemption arc, you need more than 4 episodes. But still, the show looked amazing. The shots and colors explained many things just through the details in the background. KinnPorsche was often associated with christian symbols while VegasPete were surrounded by buddism. That alone was such a brilliant idea since it added some warm feelings and raised the characters to a different level. They were the protagonists, the side characters seemed to live in another world. The production was obviously on a higher level than other BLs and that alone was admirable and let it stand out

While I struggled to get behind KinnPorsche’s relationship because of how they tackled the sexual assault (and no, Kinn apologising in ep 6 was not enough idc), I enjoyed the budding dysfunctional relationship btn Vegas and Pete. The VegasPete scenes were consistent in tone and while Porsche was not given a chance to explore the complex feelings he has around the abuse and Kinn, Pete does get to think through his conflicting feelings about Vegas and himself. VegasPete are a problematic pair and logically they shouldn’t be together, but I do love a good toxic pairing 😅 Considering the circumstances under which BoC was created, I think BoC did a good job with KinnPorsche. It isn’t perfect but I’m glad it exists because I believe it set the tone for the type of shows BoC produces. I love that they’re leaning into darker shows with lots of gray characters. Plus the quality of their work keeps improving.

I see your point, but a show shouldn’t have to rely solely on continuations to feel satisfying. Even if some of these questions could be answered by future installments, that doesn’t change the fact that season one’s story was lackluster- choppy pacing, rapid fire plot twists, etc.

First thing is welcome back and thank you for another amazing video! Kinnporshe like you mentioned has such a solid first ep and gave the impression that it will have a great blend of romance, characterization and world building (reminds me so much of Golden Blood solid first ep and then it falls from grace). Where it's weakness lies is it abandons everything in favor of the relationship between Kinn and Porsche, every moment begins to centre around them, which is not necessarily a bad thing but it does not balance that with the world outside nor any of the overarching arcs they gaves us crumbs of throughout. Now if they explored their realtionship through the lens of Porsche's parents' deaths and how Kinn is involved that would have tied nicely to the end. Why the last few episodes just end so unsatisfactorily is because at this point the viewers have become accustomed to the focus on the realtionship and the lack of gravity of anything else outside it. So when Kinn and Porsche are officially in a realtionship, that designates to a passive position in the story (there is no more buildup or conflict really in their relationship), which at that point what is there really left to watch, but insert everything they should have been building towards into just the last few episodes. This might be a result of, as you mentioned, the original novel and the multiple directors playing a part. My question is and I have observed this quite a bit with other BLs, is it really the best course of action to follow the original novel/medium in the adaptation or is it a great disservice, holding back the progress of the adaptation?
@Pastellyn Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed this!! Completely agree with you about Kinnporsche's narrative structure. It would've been totally fine if the show was just about KP's relationship (as many other BLs are) but I guess the writers wanted to have their cake and eat it too. To answer your question: I think it depends! My School President, for example, is based on a *horrible* novel but the showrunners salvaged the plot by going against the source material. On the other hand, Oh My Assistant tanked because it oversimplified the plot of the webtoon.
@Notbythemoon574 Жыл бұрын
@Pastellyn Exactly! It would have been totally fine as a character study, with the focus being on their relationship (which was an aspect I actively enjoyed despite the ethically questionable start of it). That's what I have observed as well it does heavily depend on the source material, if that source material is well written and is followed by a show, it is over all a great show (old fashioned cupcake, bed friend). If the material is questionable the show will be questionable or lack in some aspect (2gether, kinnporsche). Some shows where there have been some changes to the original work are either really great since they make it work for the screen (bad buddy had a real heavy angst narrative involving a cis-girl and marriage) or some weird choices were taken for the show (can't think of any at the moment. I think overall what it mostly depends is if you have a cohesive and solid story with a great crew behind it

I thought I was one of a few that did't really hyped up this show! I mean, I liked parts of it, but there were times where I forgot that I was watching it and did the laundry instead until a loud noise reminded me of it. The last few episodes were more of my liking and Vegas/Pete was more interesting, mostly because of Bible's and Build's good acting and the fact that I could see and understand the problematic side of their relationship, but to be real... MoD, Triage, Not Me and LoA did it so much better! And Erica was the real MVP here! I cheered her on like crazy! I was truly unsatisfied, especially with the Vegas/Pete ending (it should have ended at the pool), after the last episode, but didn't really understand why. You described really well what I was feeling throughout, but my mind didn't even want to think too much about it, so I just had this feeling of "not enough".

These trend of romantizing SA; and other controversial topics of "alternative" sexxal content, comes from fanfiction and it shouldve never left whatever sites those were in. Look at what is happening now with "It ends with us", look at what happend with "Fifty shades of grey", where the main character was a barely 18 y/o woman exploring sexuality for the first time. Honestly, it calls for a sociological study that women supported 50 shades as much as young girls were rutting for Vegas (and I dont think that it was only because Bible is such a good actor). Anyways, I love that you talked about the BTS of the start of KPs production because it was super shady to me lol; like, everytime some product that comes out as very well financed in a developing country I side eye....mostly cause I come from one of those countries as well. And to me it was kind of suspicious that all of a sudden there was this big new company making a super production with a cast of 16 actors, that appeared to be all important, then going on that huuuge tour....idk, I have trust issues. 😂

I am a die hard KP fan. Of course i know it has many flaws. I'm not surprised when viewers say they dropped it. There are many reasons why people would. It is based on f** up novels, the pacing can be weird, the slapstick gags ( especially in ep 2 and 11) are over the top, the dark mafia universe is only brushed off, the plot is messy, and not everyone will be comfortable with "pseudo incest" ( i am very familiar with the trope, having read much classical Litterature, also I have loved people whose parents were first cousins which was not an issue for them). I disagree on some takes of yours : Korn is absolutely NOT shown in a sympathetic light. The finale clearly goes into many illogical leads or leaves questions unanswered , but season 2 was supposed to happen and tie it up. As for the construction of the series, it is framed by a heavily symbolic tryptic, but I never see it discussed. So overall the show is messy, but the sum is much more than its parts. I disagree with your take that is is an unpleasant watch. It made many viewers addicted not because it's perfect the majority of fans agree it is not) , but because it has a unique charm , a lot of it resting on the actors ' charisma , the multi layered details and on the cinematographic choices .

OH mannn, thank you for this video. Even though I was so excited for this series, I ended up never watching I think the last 2 or 3 episodes because it got so convoluted and messy. Tbh, I couldn't take the main family seriously when they had a fucking holograph gun selection screen like it was some video game, and the fact that they were living in a sky scraper??? The minor family's operation and compound felt much much more believable, and also pretty since it involved traditional Thai architect (and culture maybe but I could be wrong). Like the fact that the front of the compound was a restaurant disguise was fucking sick (I think, my memory is a bit blurry). Plus their 'uniforms' which were much more casual felt a lot more realistic. With Jeff and barcode, it was insufferable. Best believe I skipped almost every scene that was focused on them. Not only was the age gap weird between the actors, the whole puppy love storyline set in-between an attempt at BDSM and two pseudo-cousins was just weird. Oh, and yeah the whole mafia shtick. And damn for a lady that was trapped in a bunker for 20 years, she looks absolutely stunning :D. After finishing this video, I'm so pissed at the wasted potential the show threw away. I have been excited for this video ever since you mentioned that you were going to go into greater detail on KinnPorsche. You really summed up all of my problems with the show and it’s wider impact on the genre. The behind the scenes stuff about KinnPorsches early production is really enlightening and I wonder what the original iteration of the show would have looked like. Seeing what competent screenwriters can do with even the most bottom of the barrel adaptations (I’m looking at you together with me, you might not be a very good show, but you’re a freaking masterpiece compared to the book you were based on), it might have actually turned out to be the show, the first episode promised to be. Dan Olson/Folding ideas has a very good series about the 50 shades of grey adaptations and how, basically all of their faults go back to E.L. James listening to no one, refusing Editors and having entirely too much creative control about the project, along with the typical issues that tend to come with serialised content (aborted story arcs, shock tactics to move the characters relationships along without actually having to put in the work to develop them, reveals and plot twists with 0 set-up or pay-off, constantly having to up the stakes, sudden fake-out alternate universe chapters etc.) trying to keep a weekly or monthly audience engaged, especially without a proper outline and possibly little prior writing experience. That said, all of Neil Gaimans Shows are great examples of the original creator having full control being done right, but that only works if the original creator is actually a good writer. KinnPorsche is frustrating, because so much talent did go into it, it looks great, the cast, for the most part, is great, the fight scenes are sublime, only for it to be utterly let down by its script.

Your videos never disappoint!! I've had similar gripes with Kp and seeing people online and my friends irl going bonkers over it really made me feel being gaslit lol. Throughout the show I felt as if the plot lines were secondary to all the mafia sexy stuff (as in the writers wanted to write a mafia romance(?), first wrote those scenes and then proceeded to write the remaining novel/show). I won't go as far as saying that the show is trash, but the blatant normalisation sexual abuse? It's a big NO for me. Thanks for putting this out there, I really hope more people get to watch it. Nicely said. At first, KP was very much anticipated by me. After ep 1 I still saw only a good side of it, especially when they showed Porsche was an amateur fighter. That made so much sense why he’s talented in fighting & ended up getting hired as a mafia bodyguard. And that’s how he finally bonded with Kinn. Besides, Kinn is openly gay but still accepted as a mafia boss, that marks a new history in BL world. However when Kinn sexually took advantage on Porsche - a straight guy who was drunk. That’s unforgivable, no apology can reverse what was done. Kinn had several options to handle this situation. He’s a boss so he could have his men to take care of this drunk guy instead of doing it by himself (if he really didn’t intend to be with Porsche alone). Yes, Vegas abducted & raped Pete was inexcusable too. Seemingly, this female writer loved fantasizing turning straight men (Porsche & Pete) into sex slaves for gay guys. Her fantasies were too obvious & irrational when you have these straight blokes enjoyed bottoming. The question is why straight guys ? I was kind of let down when the character (played by Jeff Satur) which seemed to be most intriguing among 3 brothers turned out absolutely nothing. What he’d been secretly investigating had no impact to the storyline. Nonetheless I understood why Barcode who was a minor by that time was chosen for the role, his real age fit his character as a high school student. To sum : there were scenes artistically shot & deserved mentioning along the way. But sadly KP is one of BLs that when it ended, I’ve let it end without a bit of nostalgia.

I do agree with some of your points but the story is still ongoing and the series itself isn't finished so most of the secrets would have been revealed later as it has been on the novel.(If I want I can totally spoil some of the false remarks you've made but that would be spoilers) As we all know the writers are now alleged of molestation and other crimes so next season is highly unlikely. You were right about the comedic wrong timing and how they made fun of Porsche's rape also the italian mafia one also the change of tone in scenes. Also Vegaspete itself is the biggest foul of the stroy, like they should have taken time to show their side and develop their story more as it did seem a bit illogical and rushed off. But as for Kim and his mother. All those would be a spoiler but they aren't done yet.

Interesting… from my research, I gathered that the web novel has been finished for some time now. I’m curious about how these so called continuations tie up any loose ends. The story of KP season one shouldn’t have to rely solely on future continuations to feel satisfying. But as of now, the story feels half-baked.

@@Pastellyn If u have read the web novel, it did mention about Kim and his mother afterwards🙂 It's true though as of now, the execution is a bit flawed and I do agree with not following the script of the original novel. But it's highly unlikely as uk legal procedures. Still hoping them to make another season with different writers🫠

I think a huge problem Kinnporsche has is the source material. It's based on a novel series which was written a pretty long time ago now. That's why it feels so dissonant in its tone. It's typical for Thai web novels of its time to downplay heavy topics such as rape, etc. and make unnecessary jokes like the ones you have discussed

Thank you so much for this video! It really opened my eyes to why I havrn't really thought about Kinnporsche at all after I was through with watching it. I thought it wad great at first, but now I'm really sad that it didn't live up to the hype AT ALL. It could have been great, I've been wanting to see morally grey characters, mature themes etc. handled earnestly in a BL.. but no. Also I hated VegasPete from the get-go, it always seemed so goofy. I did not believe the whole 'BDSM'-shtick they tried to portray for one second, it was cringe-inducing.

Oh I was wondering, would you make more videos like this one for other extremely popular Thai series, like Bad Buddy or UWMA. Also, I would LOVE to hear your take on series from other countries. Have a good day.

I think KP is still a great show worth some hype despite all its weak points. Just comparing it to Big Dragon and Unforgotten Night which failed despite riding the hype waves of KP and being another dark mafia BL to look forward to. The cinematography was decent and gave a grand feel to it but still they were both massive let downs due to the plot and acting. Those two shows got the attention of fans and a chance that many small unknown actors never get but it just proves times have changed and simply adding NC and good looking guys wont win fans over. That's why I think despite the loose ends, pacing and tonal dissonance what KP did do right is worth the applause and hype and accolades. I mean the two authors were on set all the time and they cancelled the filmania version due to differences so there's really only so much the BOC team can change but what they did change made the show sooo much better. The mom being alive is not a thing in the book so they were setting up for a season 2. So I didn't mind some loose strings but I did feel like they wasted time with filler moments and comedic scenes. I really did enjoy the comedic flare in the first 6 eps tho it was a relief. With the ending I really don't think they made Korn look sympathetic he still looked suspicious af. With all the back and forth on which brother killed the husband its more believed to be Korn cause of Porsche's memory scene and the lines said and the cupboard door all from his perspective. When I first watched it I definitely didn't think Korn was the good one who hid his sister this whole time and especially with how he killed the uncle and brother for almost revealing something. There's also the line at the end where he says the victor is the one who writes history just looking smug. On top of the scene where Porchay and Porsche visit their mom and she tries to stay stoic but when they hug her u can see her face break. She's clearly playing into the role. I honestly liked the addition of her being alive. The show definitely had its faults but I cant say it's a bad show and just the cinematography saved it. There's other big shows that attempted and fell flat. And this is one of the few shows that had such a hype and fanbase for the side couples. While also everyone was into all the sibling dynamics.

KinnPorshe, the series light-hearted, and the actual novel is totally dark. I didn't mind the series but only hated that Porshe was portrait as a sissy but not as a bad ass he was in the novel

I hate how unnecessarily quirky and immature the plot and the characters are. It just makes me cringe so hard.

i see people keep mentioning i told sunset about you in the comments and i wanted to like that show and the sequel SOOOOO bad like i loved the tone and the cinematography and oh-aew is one of the characters ever but i just can't get past how unlikeable teh is. i couldn't fucking stand him. anyways. i feel like not me (which ironically finished airing literally like 2 weeks before kinnporsche came on air), even though it's not really about the mafia, was a much better "dark romance" than kp. the eclipse too, even though it can be pretty typical bl at times. which is crazy considering both of them aired on gmmtv which is SUPER hit or miss, but every now and again they really hit their mark. kp was such a let down :/

I've always been scared of a show that could be something like Killing Stalking would be popular. And I hate how these shows are normalizing rpe & abuse in relationships. I'm really scared for the many little girls that see these stories and it just becomes so normal to them that they will be trapped in a scenario they can't escape. That they will think their dreams are coming true but realize they have put themselves in a nightmare.

Kinn Porsche was my first BL and I L O V E D it, still do, don't want to listen to all this neggy stuff! It was pure entertainment! I'm sorry you have spent so much gime trashing this. It hasn't made me dislike it or find it any less entertaining. I'm sorry I wasted my time watching it, well the first half. Obviously many people agree with you, but not me.

Okay. Congratulations on liking it. You want a cookie or something? Just because you like the series does not mean that it is not flawed or above critique. If it meets your standards, then good for you. No one is trying to convince you not to like the show. But people have the right to not like the series, and they're not less than just because they don't. But you being rude to the content creator as if you're somehow superior just makes you look petty and immature. If that was your goal then congratulations, you nailed it.

Good work on a very tough job in an often hysterical arena. I think aside from the guy who did the colour grading for the cinematography the marketing people were the ones that really earned their money. Sadly, I felt none of the actors impressed me because an actor needs a good script in order to really show what he’s capable of. Even the most senior actors in this series did not shine as a result of extremely mediocre script writing. Somehow after ITSAY people had the opinion they just need arresting visuals to make a good BL and sadly that didn’t start or end with KP. We are now in an era where the writing for 9/10 BLs is almost secondary, and the genre has descended into beautiful picture composition, naked sixpack, and NC scenes which is killing the profile of any good actors in the field. In terms of your future analysis, it may help to bear in mind an age gap isn’t necessarily problematic whether in fiction or irl, despite the reactionary discourse going on in Conservative America, which seems to have seeped into LGBT politics in the worst way kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKO9eXdslq6Hmck . There are social differences that really matter and are more fundamental like gender, race and class, yet how often do we see warnings for people not to date/marry wealthy white men? Never; instead we actively encourage it. Age is not inherently exploitative and certainly not more than the life-changing and pervasive differences arising from gender, race or class which young queer people often seek refuge from in relationships with older people. We raise an eyebrow about age difference to the extent that unequal endowments of power create more than the potential for abuses of power. In the KimChay situation it is clearly the younger man who is pursuing the older while the older man is resisting so there is no grooming etc. Furthermore, LGBT relationships of any gender already have statistically higher age gaps than heterosexuals’ for many perfectly reasonable, structural reasons that have nothing to do with sexual grooming or financial exploitation, so I think we should not lapse into those popular, but still Christo-fascist views, based on compulsory heteronormativity. For an excellent, nuanced philosophical exposition on this, I recommend Lola Sebastion’s award-winning video analysis of Call Me By Your Name kzbin.info/www/bejne/nofTYnltfpaeoKs. Su su 💕

Thanks for watching! On the age gap thing: I do see your point, and I agree that age gaps aren't always problematic, but I'm talking specifically about relationships between minors (or almost-minors) and financially independent adults. Regardless of whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, I consider these relationships unbalanced due to wide variations in mental development and life experience. (I should also note that these factors are unique to age gap relationships as gender, race and sexuality do not universally impact mental development.) I can also speak to this issue personally as I have had friends (gay and straight!) be in manipulative relationships with older people when they were teenagers. I agree that many conservative Christians weaponize "grooming" to persecute LGBT people, but this does not negate the very real issue of power imbalances in relationships between barely legal adults and older people.

@@Pastellyn I get you. Personal or even our own cultural disgust does not imply a moral principle however. Personal disgust is one of the most important mechanisms in right-wing recruiting. It’s being used in America for decades and is at peak effectiveness right now. It is used primarily against sexual and racial minorities there as effectively as it was used by the Nazis. Easily looked up and understood if you’re a university student. Martha Nussbaum has some good video lectures on that here too. Moreover there are no minors in this Thai drama

@@stepmaster9988 I'd like to leave our convo as is, but I'm a bit taken aback. Your main takeaway from my response is that my only reason for disliking age gaps is "personal disgust," yet I never so much as mentioned disgust in my reply. For you to imply that I have no basis for my argument and that I should "look up" what conservative fearmongering is comes off as condescending, honestly. I'm more than familiar with the horrors of fascist rhetoric. I'm all for having respectful, nuanced conversations about media representation. However, I'm not sure this discussion will lead to anything fruitful as you failed to address to any of my response. I don't want to be hostile, but I'd appreciate if we could end this conversation here. I feel that we've hit a road block. Thanks.
