Four months have passed since I had the MRI, they found three herniated discs and one of them is extruded, now it's very difficult for me to even work, I can survive going to the bathroom or cooking but I don't have much autonomy, I have to lying down after a while I can no longer handle the stress and I have panic attacks, I'm sleeping on the floor to try to keep my spine straight. Hello Collin. I'm about two months into my recovery from what I believe to be a minor disc bulge (I had an MRI done when I was younger that showed a minor disc bulge in the L5 S1 area if I recall correctly. The pain and discomfort that I now feel is more dull and and like tight/tense. Is that pretty typical, in your opinion?
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain Жыл бұрын
Hi Antonio, yes it is normal to feel pain and discomfort for many months after the injury occurs. It can often change in character and location as the injury heals and you become more mobile again. Typically any sciatica nerve pain for example would begin to move closer to the root (the spine) as you heal as opposed to when it first happens and it can be all the way down in your foot. Same with the back pain, it can shift in intensity, feeling and location. Obviously it should not be getting worse but there will be good days and bad days but of course when you look back at the week you want more good ones :) Just take it steady and don't push yourself to hard too soon, that's the mistake i made ;)

Hi, your advice would be greatly appreciated! I hurt my back in January. Tingling hands and toes. No sciatica leg pain but very mild glute pain on and off along with back pain. After week 10, 90% of the pain went and i only had Tingling in my right foot. I thought i was nearly healed but caused a flare up over lifting and pain returned at week 11. I went straight to the physio and doing it 8 weeks now. Pain seems to reduced but i noticed my calves randomly feel heavy some days and weird sensation in my back. Can this be part of the healing process? I find it strange how my pain is reducing but this symptom has started a few weeks ago.

I lifted 30+ bags of gravel weighing 25KG each with poor technique. That weight was focused on my T12 vertebra. Although I didn't have a moment where I clearly knew I injured myself, all that happened was I had a slight twinge in my back. That was 3 years ago. I have had lower back ache on and off ever since. The most worrying part is I have had an inflamed T12 vertebra all this time, but I only really feel this pain at night 4 to 5 hours into sleep and have to move position to clear it, until waking agin every 30 to 50 minutes and readjusting my position so I can fall back to sleep. I have yet to get a definitive answer as to what's going on at my T12 vertebrae after seeing a chiropractor, NHS physio, private physio, clinical masseuse. None of the people I have seen have said it's anything serious, but as it hasn't cleared, I am concerned. Could it be the beginnings of something that will get worse, the start of a herniated disc? I have no sciatica or other issues, just the inflammation of the spine. I know my Erector Spinae and QL muscles have been a bit of a mess - tight and inflamed at times. I am not sure if the T12 inflammation could be from my QL pulling on the 12th rib which is connected to the T12 vertebrae. Another thing to add is, I did have a deep tissue massage 3 months ago and all my pain went away for 4 days, but then returned. The massage must have temporarily relaxed my muscles for a few days. I am hoping this is a sign that I just need to stretch and maybe get some regular massages and this will fix everything.

Hello Colin, I had a back injury after working out my hamstrings for two months and then I stopped (July) when I realized that something was wrong with the workout. I began to feel back pain for a month after I stopped doing the exercises for my Runner knee problem. I began to feel a sharp lower back pain after a party while I was holding a camera for 5 hours standing and the following day I was in a agonizing pain that I couldn’t do much due to my back pain and few days later; I ended up with my right buttock pain follow with my foot pain. I’m assuming that this is a herniated disc problem?

Hi there, it could be a bulging disc, a herniated disc, piriformis syndrome, a combination or something completley different! That was probably not the answer you were hoping for :) but as a best guess and this is truly a guess simply based on what you have written i would say it could be a bulging disc. Many injuries we carry can be from many years ago and it can be hard to pinpoint when the beginning of the herniation occured. Typically the disc material will dehydrate/re-absorb/be eaten by the body over time and the disc are will scar over. Yes it will take time but you should be pain free long before the disc scars over but you need to get a get rehab program in place and practice daily spine hygiene moves that will place your body in the best position to heal itself. Most disc herniatons that “heal” just become subclinical but are still present. Ie the herniation is there. The pain is not. Yes yes some retraction of a herniation can occur, especially disc extrusions or free fragments but for the most part, there’s not a major change in size.
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain 6 ай бұрын
Can you define most and major change? You need to be careful of your use of terminology and define the terms of which you speak. A herniation is where the annulus tears and disc material has been pushed out of the outer edge of the annulus. This material will, by the three hypothesies laid out in the literature, be partially re-absorbed, dehydrate, undergo phagocytosis by the body or be influenced by all three. Most or major tell people nothing. If you read up on the literature of disc herniations you will see that there is a body of inferrence that is statistcally signifcant in showing a loss in disc height and disc volume after a herniation. If the person only has a disc bulge or protrusion where the annulus fibrosus has not been torn then yes it will be highly unlikley to see a statistical change in disc volume or disc height. What is interesting is researchers still do not know if the changes in disc height/volume post herniation pre-dispose those people to a greater likelihood of degenerative disc issues later in life. A work in progress :)

Everyone says that when the sciatica starts to improve, it works up the leg and ends at the source by the herniation. What about if you didn't have back pain in the beginning?
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain Жыл бұрын
Back problems can be multi factorial and the symptoms can manifest in many different ways. For me i had no back pain when the sciatica started and it started a while after the actual acute back pain. Every body is different in that regard. Generally though as the sciatica starts to improve you will feel the pain more and more towards the spine as opposed to the lower leg where you may have felt it before. What is your exact diagnosis? Will be easier to formulate an answer based on your own circumstances :)

Hi there, yes you can have a bulging disc without a annular tear but with a herniated disc you will always have an annular tear. Sometimes bulges can be more problematic than full herniations to heal but the principles remain the same - core work, movement, mobility, decompression etc. Trust in the process ;)

This is where some blog entries and AI written articles start to get things muddled up and it only takes one or two wrong words and the whole narrative moves to "healed" in 6 to 8/12 weeks" which is simply not true for a herniated disc. If you do not work in the evenings i would be starting at home rehab and first looking at these uppper body exercises to try - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHTagXWoqZaNi5I and some lower - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZrHoJljaZd7p5o along with some core work - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2K1oq2QpsubbMk - i would pick 2 exercises from each video and do them 3 days a week along and then on the non-workout days i would be doing this stretching routine - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmKbhH-vrMmthKc - wait at least 4 hrs before doing any stretching or exercises, do not do them when you first get out of bed in the morning. I would also add in decompression work for 5 days out of 7 done before getting into bed - kzbin.info/www/bejne/moDLgnmriN6cpKc and kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKTPoYympKZlj7M . This would be a really good place to start to get you back on your feet. Good luck :)
