Herniated discs or bulging discs can bring us a whole lot of pain both locally in the lower back and referred if the disc pushes on the sciatica nerve.
I remember when I was at my worst point I didn’t know if I would ever be able to walk properly again or do the sports that I loved.
Not knowing if you will ever recover or how long it will even take can leave many back pain sufferers feeling depressed and dejected as a feeling of hopelessness takes hold.
What to do and what not to do are vitally important when it comes to the healing of a herniated or bulging disc.
In this video I would like to cover 7 things that should be avoided to improve the healing process of your herniated disc.

Hi there, it is especially important if you have had back surgery to get your core nice and strong and of course get your back strong. Decompression work will also help a lot along with keeping your hips nice and mobile. Are you currently going to the gym or doing some rehab work?

Hello, Nice videos and very informative. I am recovering from a back injury in march of this year. MRI scan showed disc herniation on L4L5. Radiologist described that I have compressed nerve root but I never had any simptoms of sciatica. Only pain in my back that was teally intense in the first week. After slowly the pain was less intense, I was in bed for only one day and the next I started moving slowly. Avoided bending, trying to have a good posture. Only problem is that I work as a dentist and although I try to sit properly while working alot of times I have to change positions that are not that proper. I am better but there are some set backs from time to time when I get some back stiffness. I am still scared to start some more serious pfysical activities such as jogging or playing some recreational basketball. I will also avoid skiing this year. But I hope I.will get back to activities I enjoy soon. Keep up the good work. Thumbs up

Hi there, yes some jobs can be difficult to manage due to the posture required. I know you are scared of starting serious activities and going from nothing to skiing, basketball or jogging would be a no no in my book. When we are younger we can play sports to get fit but after injuries and aging it is actually better to get yourself strong to be able to play your sport. What i would recommend is to start out with rehab type exercises that i recommend and progress through those with similar gym type exercises - video here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn-pmoSMnaiepMU - you can control the speed, movement pattern, intensity etc whilst working out in the gym and can take your time to build the necessary strength which will help support your body whilst at work and also be able to handle the stress of your chosen sport. Most sports require dynamic movements, quick changes in direction and in the case of basketball and even skiing other participants who can run into us - external forces. This is something we can control whilst in the gym which is why i recommend this type of method to return back to your chosen activities. Hope that helps but if you have anymore equestions please let me know :)

Just finding your videos after herniating L5-S1 three weeks ago. I had sciatica pain 6 weeks leading up to the event that sent me to the ER. I'm trying to do my research and implement strategies to heal from this. I've really appreciated your content in this regard. After I went to the ER, I have had numbness along my sciatic nerve all the way down to my heel and last 2 toes. I'm wondering if you experienced that back when you had your injury and how that resolved or if any of your clients had similar sciatic nerve issues? I'm trying to do some nerve desensitization but I'm brand new to all this. I'm very glad to have found your AM/ PM routine video, too! Thanks in advance.

Yes i had very bad sciatica pain where i was unable to walk because the pain was so bad when i stood up. I spent close to 2 weeks living on the floor popping pain killers etc so i know sciatica all too well. Many of my clients experience this and it is very common when you have a bulging/herniated disc at L4L5/L5S1 level. There is no one fix for it, i do have quite a few different videos on various stretches, decompression work and nerve glides which can bring relief. For me, i did a lot of El Doa decompression work, core strengthening, hip strengthening, myofascial stretching and planned low back relaxation time. Ice would also help with the pain if i was having a bad flare up. Feel free to reach out to me at colin.macgregor@bashbackpain.com for more guidance :)

The sciatica pain is under control with a nerve med, but the numbness is what concerns me. Did you have any lasting numbness? I'm a little scared of doing anything to bring that sciatica pain back, i.e. anything that flexes my spine, tilting my pelvis forward etc.

Very informative videos! Watched like 10 already. Thank you very much! I have a herniated cervical disc C6-C7 and I do exercises to strenghten the muscles around my neck and upper back. One thing I am wondering is when you started strenghtening or exercising, did you still have a slight tingling feeling caused by damaged or pinched nerve? Or did you wait for it to completely go away? I have no pain anymore, just small electric feeling in my fingers. Wondering if I should keep exercising 😊
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain 4 ай бұрын
You should have been doing some strengthening work for your neck and upper back already along with some nerve flossing. Did you follow a rehab protocol. You can start normal strength work but you will need to be careful of controlling your neck tension, head protrusion, trapezius activation etc. What are you doing currently for any rehab?

@@bashbackpain Thank you for responding. So to start, it has been around 2 and a half month since the injury and I already have no pain just a discomfort when I look up or down (bending my neck) or have a bad posture while at work, so I try to avoid it as much as possible. When nerve irritated I get a tingly feeling in my wrist/palm/fingers. I have some strenght loss in my left tricep. As mentioned I do some exercises around neck and upper back (every second day for 20-30 minutes), I do nerve flossing exercises every day (4-5 minutes) , I do some other exercises like squats, biceps and other that do not put tension on my neck and do not cause a discomfort. I used to jogg every day, now I stopped since I noticed it irritates the area around herniated disc and nerve. I tried cycling, but hough there is no impact on neck while cycling, the horizontal position of my body puts some tension on it, so after doing it once I stopped. I did some PT sessions, currently I am searching for a new one since the previous physio did not have a concrete plan for my herniated disc, just some basic neck and back exercises. It gets better if I compare progress every 2 weeks, tho it is very slow and sometimes if I sleep with my neck bent I might have a bad day after and start doubting it. I have seen many videos of yours you have talked about mental tips and that really changed my perspective how to look at it. Any more tips? Or maybe a specific video I could watch of yours? I would appreciate a lot, great content!

I don’t really care for MRI results; I’m only looking for best practices of sitting, lifting, sleeping, Driving and working out my lower back at the slow pace.
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain 9 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes MRI's are simply a tool to be used by the clinician in helping with diagnosis but more frequently today they are used as the sole evidence for the problem. The clinician will barely test/enquire to the patient about their problem etc. Sadly it is a function of modern medicine in many places these days. You are doing the right thing in regards to implementing best practices for your recovery. Taking things slow and steady is the best way forward and not trying to run before you can walk as they say. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out at colin.macgregor@bashbackpain.com have a good one :)

@@bashbackpain hi there, thanks for the reply. I have one more question. What’s your opinion on pain ointment for lower back pain? Do you recommend it (If so, do you have a brand that you recommend?) for flare ups or just icing it / using infrared heat mats for the pain? I’m only in two months of taking it easy on my lower back and was wondering how long should I rest before I start trying any workout routine for strengthening my core? Thanks.

Will reducing weight help in the recovery process??
@bashbackpain

Hi there, yes it will. Excess weight will of course place more stress on the joints around the spine making the healing process longer. Whatever we can do to assist the body the healing the better :)

Is swimming in the morning any good for healing disc herniation?
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain 6 ай бұрын
Hi there, you need to be careful with swimming or at least choose your stroke carefully. Breast stroke puts the most stress on the lumbar spine which can be aggravating for an already irratated disc. Front and back crawl would be best but again not hammering at 100%. Any gentle exercise which gets you moving and helps stimulate blood flow is going to be beneficial (not running) and if you do have access to a pool i would also suggest pool walking as another way to create some tension in your core and help with the strengthening aspect. Hope that helps but if you have any futher questions please let me know :)

How does a disc bulge heal compared to a disc with a extrusion?
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain 3 ай бұрын
A bulge typically takes longer to heal as the body does not respond to it the same way as an extrusion. As an extrusion is slightly more agressive the boby responds with a great anti-inflammatory response therefore leading to a quicker healing time. Albeit, you still need to be practising good spine hygiene and taking care of yourself through the whole recovery journey :)

@@bashbackpain thanks for replying back! How are you? Yes I’m scared to do surgery, I do have an option to get a second opinion, everyone around me says not to do the surgery. I do have a question do you think if the pain does go away and if I can walk normal and longer without pain can I get back to me dental assisting job, or should I just look for a receptionist job? I want your opinion/advice? And what do you think if I can ride rollercoasters ever again? 🙂
@bashbackpain
@bashbackpain 8 ай бұрын
Most people are able to return to their normal jobs as long as that job is not an excessively physiologically stressful job which landed them in pain in the first place. I understand you must do a lot of standing and bending in your job so it would be vitally important to get your core and back as strong as possible and be practicing good spine hygiene to be able to hold yourself in pain free positions. And yes as for rollercoasters i was in Six Flags New Jersey on all the roller coasters after i was receovered from my disc herniation ;)
