. Brian, a subscriber and playa, visited me while I was in Chiang Mai for a month in January. We jammed a few courses and Haripunchai in Lampang or Lamphun was one of them. I wanted to jam with only a few clubs, because I hadn't done it in a while.

Let me tell you sum'in...this is the most stress-free golf you can play.
Your expectations are gone. You know your limits. You know you can't do more than you have in the bag.
I fell victim to the stress though by trying to smash a couple of balls that got me into trouble. This is the irony. We get so worried about the carry or the water or whatever, so we get tense because we want to hit it harder.
Actually what we end up doing is losing distance because our muscles are not functioning properly and we do the exact thing we were worried about. We go way off target, hit it shorter and end up kicking ourselves for no good reason. Idiots!
With these sorts of rounds, you learn to set up your next shot and try get it to a position that is comofrtable for you. This is the key element. you only have a certain number of "shots" in your arsenal so you need to use them as best you can. Any in between shots and you're behind the 8-ball.
Now of course this course wasn't the longest but it also wasn't entirely short. If it was longer, all I would need is to add a 4 iron and remove the PW. Then the concept is the same. Hit 4 iron off the tee, try set up shots comofrtable for me into the holes.
You also release the attachment to the result of a hole with this type of game. you are not expecting much and probably expecting the worst. You soon realize that a bogey or a double is not the worst thing in the world.
You also realize you can FIGHT for a hole to completion. You can always save a par or a bogey. Just keep going and try prove the system wrong by knuckling down and jamming with what you got!

I am a horrible golfer and get excited to shoot below 100. You inspired me to try 4 clubs (5,7,9,wedge) and a putter. I played my best round ever ( 87) and I am surprised how relaxed I was on the tee, when not having a club choice. I learned how far my irons really go and what a good bump’n’run can do for your short game. I will do it again and go for beating 80.Thank you!

I took woods out of my bag for 6 months, mostly playing 3 iron from the tee. What I found: 1) MUCH more comfortable now with long irons (main reason for doing it in the first place) 2) WAY more focus on approach shot distances. If 3 too much off the tee, back down. 3) LOTS more playing of chips, short pitches, flops on third shots as your approach shots are longer 4) AFTER some time, you really look at the game more strategically, planning how to score 5) NOT swinging out of your shoes - A leisurely 190 works JUST AS WELL as a crushed 210 off the tee Typing this, might be time to do it again.

Did this a couple weeks ago with a 9, 6 iron and a 3 rescue. Very enjoyable. No thinking about which club use. Just imagination and get it done. Definitely helps with course management 👍 Keep up the informative vids. 👌

A league I used to be in always had a 3 club night after the regular season was over. Everybody always shot their normal scores plus one or two or three strokes. Always made me wonder why we carry so many clubs! And it was fun watching guys putting with irons or woods or hybrids. 😂

I've been playing 3 clubs all winter, driver/ 5 hybrid/ 7 iron/ Cleaveland smart sole42D chipper and cleaveland 56 smart sole S and my putter. It's all I need, I rarely find I have a shot where I'm between clubs. With a nice light stand bag its easy round.

I've started playing with 7 clubs in a 'Sunday' bag, and walk unless the course doesn't allow it. Way less thinking. Driver, mini-driver, 3h, 6i, 8i, pw, putter. I could probably lose the Driver, but it's just fun to hit sometime. Might take it out if I'm ever able to play another round (all golf courses around here are closed right now).

I rarely carry 14 clubs. I follow the Way of the Playa: Only carry clubs you're confident you can hit. That often means 14* Mini-driver, 4H, 6i, 8i, PW, SW, putter. Occasionally I'll carry a couple other lofted irons, especially if I'm not walking the course. And at 71, I'm also permanently playing from the gold tees, about 5800 yds.--scoring better, and having much more fun.

Yes sir. Focus on anything but golf. The thing you focus on is what you get. When you stand ovr a shot, think of something that makes you smile, feel the smile and realize that nothing that happens on the golf course is going to affect your earnings, your marriage your relationships, your joy in life, your purpose, your kids, your dog, your enjoyment of finer things. Then swing the club and keep thinking of the next holiday, a recent memory, look forard to your other hobby. And if you don't have another hobby, get one. That is the surest way to get over negativity on the golf course, because you will just think of the next time you can do that hobby instead

In my personal life, I am a pro playing with less than a full bag. That started at 50, and the bag has been getting lighter with each passing year. My dad used to use that phrase, "light in the loafers", but really, with me, its more like "light in the boxers". But I digress! Point being, I never use 1/2 the clubs I carry, so why carry them at all? Good question. I know which clubs I hit well, and will employ this strategy during my next round and report on the outcome. As with my personal life, its much better to play with a nearly empty bag, than no bag! 😜⛳❤🏌️‍♂️

I've been playing with 7 clubs for the last few rounds and think it's brilliant D, 3w, 4h, 7i, 9i, 52° & putter As Matt says, it makes you plan your way round the course and removes the ego. I found the short game was the biggest improvement cause I wasn't fiddling around with which wedge / shot to play. You've only got 1 wedge, commit & make it work.

I find that with less clubs you can actually improve much faster with much less practice because you are using those clubs much more than you normally would. You also learn how to hit different types of shots.

I think PW was a poor choice. You can do everything with an 8i that you can with a PW, and you have more club now. Don’t waste your 3 clubs with 2 wedges unless you’re just completely horrible with your iron game.
