The number of guitars you want is n+1, n being the number you currently have. The number of guitars you are allowed to have is s-1, s being the number that will cause your significant other to leave you. These formulas work for bikes as well.

I would have loved to have seen Jim Croce. I would like to see Clapton, too. I looked around and seem to have acquired 8 guitars, 4 in the past 5 years. The Martin factory was great, even my wife enjoyed it. We got to meet Chris Martin and Dick Boak and enjoy food and drinks. I was a lucky winner to the annual “Evening With Chris Martin!” I came home and bought 3 Martins, so be ready! I love your voice and the whole singer/songwriter style gives me hope for the music industry.

I admire your tenacity and drive young lady, I wish you all the success a person can achieve. I myself am now turning 70 years old this year. I finally have time to enjoy my music and playing guitar more than ever. 50 years ago I played in a couple of small House Bands. We worked a couple of nights a week at different establishments similar to the Pubs in Britain. Always fun to do. Again I will say if I am lucky, When you achieve your success perhaps I will escape from America long enough to see you perform at Wembley

I would have loved to see Robert Johnson perform. The Ovation guitar factory is about a hour from NYC, but the other direction from Nazareth. That's an interesting place. I live nearby, a lot of people I went to school with work or have worked there. Years ago, whilst in Manhattan. I stopped at this teensy tiny deli-restaurant. It had like 5 chairs to eat at. I bought a sandwich sat down next to a woman who was eating and reading a paper. We talked while we ate, mostly about the weather, traveling, houses, just small talk. The woman was delightful. Only after she was through eating and left, I realized it was Joni Mitchell. Mary, you seem like a delight too. Being a musician is a profession where you are the bridge between someone's dreams and the "real world," their escape at the end of a long day, a warm friend who sets a mood.

I've been watching your videos for several months now, and am impressed by your willingness to show complete strangers (i.e., KZbin watchers) the process(es) you go through to grow and learn as a musician and performer. It's VERY difficult to make yourself vulnerable like that. I've been an inept guitarist for decades, and know nothing about the music business, except that this sort of thing (touring) is far more complicated and involved than it appears, but I nonetheless hope you can come to Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, in 2020, and play The Dakota. I will happily buy a ticket!

I was fortunate enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble in 1989. I would like to be able to see him and the band again, and I wonder where he would have taken his music had he not departed life early. I "do" have several guitars(acoustic & electric), a few basses and a drum set. Currently play Bass live, but will jump to guitar or drums if asked/needed. PS. I could just sit and listen to you talk, and I'd be as relaxed as possible.

I like what you said about learning songs not just tricks. Lol I think anyone new to guitar are bad to just learn riffs & licks but they can't put it all together, they don't take the time to learn all the parts that bring together and make an actual song. I think that was great advice for something lots of people commonly do when they first start.

Just sharing something interesting a player older than you - when I was learning there was no internet at all! I am actually grateful that I was forced to train my ear by learning songs from recordings. We all used to sit by the radio with a cassette recorder to catch a certain song (that is, if we hadn't bought it on a tape or record). Rewind, rewinds, rewind to learn the song by ear and hand write out the lyrics. Wonder how many of those rectangular cassette recorders I wore out. I do confess to loving the ease of finding pretty much any song you are looking for on KZbin these days. It's amazing! (but yes, times have changed).

Hi Mary, when I was just starting to play the guitar you had to buy an LP just to listen to your favourite artists or you could buy a cassette tape and run the risk of getting it chewed up! then trying to untangle your tape from inside your walkman without snapping the tape, I have even used sellotape to join the tape up, lol the times..... all the best.

Hi Mary! Ever hear the slogan “there’s no better revenge than success”? Don’t let the naysayers get you down. But when success comes and the joy, it becomes less about revenge and more about being all you are created to be. I think you are an incredibly sweet and vibrant person, deserving of that 80,000 member audience. Let that loving what you are doing show through, as that is infectious and attractive. Write songs that explore a range of emotions and life situations and watch people come to hear and identify with them. I love guitarists, generally, and you’re at the top, because of your wonderful transparency. Thanks for sharing you! BTW, I own a Breedlove Stage Dreadnought and play background rhythm and fingerstyle - made of sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides - beautiful instrument with a piano-like bell-tone quality, with new strings, of course. So, I know more about acoustic, than electrics, but have played for many years and always looking for new techniques and skills. What can I say - I “dig” your channel!

Band I would love to have seen : ELP in the late 70s to early 80s. I saw them at the end of their touring life in a bare bones, no stage effects concert with Jethro Tull. I also saw Emerson Lake and Powell with Cozy Powell on drums which was amazing. But ELP in their hey day would have been amazing. Similarly, Yes in the early 80s, Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin with Shakti.

This was really therapeutic to listen to. I’m a guitarist and I have my first gig this Thursday (for my university’s Battle of the Bands). I’m excited, but lately I’ve been bothered by people on my course whenever I whip my guitar out (I’m using it for a theatre module performance) going ‘play this!’ or ‘play that!’ and it makes me feel like I’m just a dancing monkey. But I’m not, I’m aspiring for greater feats than to just be a people pleaser. I love the idea of having a level of outrageousness to one’s life goals. I don’t know what mine is yet, but I dunno, something about this video really helped me today. Thanks Mary 😊

Practicing classical music: "something i kind of liked doing, but kind of not liked doing." i know exactly what you mean. Love William Walton! (and Rachmaninov, OBVIOUSLY) It's great nowadays there's something like Patreon. When you think back to days of yore, a musician was beholden to patrons, who were the rich and royalty, to make a living. After that fell away, artists were then beholden to publishers and record labels. Now, amazingly, it's truly down to the level of "the people." Sweet, horrible freedom! It's inspiring how you're making it work.

You mentioned suggestions for songs you could do. In the past few weeks I have heard two songs on the radio while driving that immediately made me think "Mary Spender should do covers of these and they would be awesome". They would both need arranging for guitar. 1) Sweet Dreams (are made of this)- It was weird but as soon as I heard Annie Lennox start singing on this track it reminded me of you. 2) Adia- Something about Sarah McLaughlan's voice and phrasing reminds me of your voice and style as well.

I gave my son two of my guitars and i still have eight acoustics:- 4 Martins, two Breedloves, a washburn parlour and a sigma.I now have essential tremor so now my playing is grocked. As a younger person,i had an early job which meant i could play from 1pm till 6.30 pm,break for dinner and then play 'till 10.30.I did that for two years....................

Btw the Martin factory is only about an hour and a half outside of NYC by car. Awesome place, the museum is special. I'm from the area and the factory is only a short drive away from me!
