Yeah that's likely to be true. If you watch my video of luo assimilations, you'll see that explained your point. Lango and Kumam were assimilated into luo from Ateker.
@Ochen656
@Ochen656 Жыл бұрын
No, the history of luo origin starts from Israel. The migrated to Egypt, Ethiopia , Sudan and Uganda. The langil were among those who came with other groups of luo to Ethiopia, but due to war, they went back and came with those of the iteso, which later they settled in uganda. So langi is a group of luo, though those who came to Uganda were elders.
@Mrpwocber

@@Ochen656 Langi are Ateker, they are nilo-hamites not Lwo/Luo. They lived along side Lwo people but they are a distinct community similar to Kumam and Teso.

@@KPtravels001 From R3ĎĎ)I)!Ť : The Shilluk kingdom and its relationship with Sudan, ca. 1500-1863 The Shilluk are a Nilotic-speaking people residing in what is now northern South Sudan. They were the only Nilotes who adopted not only a sedentary lifestyle, but even managed to establish a state that technically even persists to this day. For Sudanese history, they are important in three regards: • It was likely the Shilluk who defeated the Funj and drove them to the Blue Nile, where the latter would establish the Sultanate of Sennar that would dominate much of riverine Sudan for three centuries. • They were fierce raiders who managed to subjugate a territory as far north as Eleis near Aba Island, with their influence reaching to Khartoum and the eastern Nuba Mountains. • They managed to stall the Turco-Egyptian expansion for four decades, putting up one of the fiercest resistances of all Sudanese / South Sudanese people. The Shilluk emerged around the second half of the 15th century. This was one of the murkiest periods of Sudanese history, when the Christian states of old, Makuria and Alwa, had long passed their zenith and had disintegrated. The Gezira was home to many different people speaking various Eastern Sudanic languages and was once under the influence of the Nubian kingdom of Alwa, but due to its decline from the 13th century, it had probably disintegrated into various petty states and chiefdoms. The Dinka, who claim to have originated in the Gezira, remember this period as a time of chaos, drought and slavery, causing them to flee southwards to what is now South Sudan. Recent archaeolgical investigations in the Sudanese-Ethiopian borderland seem to confirm the violence and destruction that ensued the 12th century. The Arabized tribes of northern Sudan believe that this was the era of the legendary Abdallah Jammah, who united the Arab tribes and waged a war against what was left of Alwa (remembered in the traditions as "Anaj" or "kingdom of Soba"). On the fringes of the territory once influenced by Alwa, along the White Nile in what is now southern Sudan and northern South Sudan, a new people was arriving. They called themselves "Chollo", but came to be known as Shilluk. All what we know of their early history is derived from their own oral traditions. The Shilluk claim to have come from the deep south, from a place named "Dimo". Their leader, the "reth", was called Nyikang and was leading his people to the confluence of the White Nile and the Sobat River near where the town of Tonga would eventually be founded. The Shilluk were many, but south of their new home was the inhospitable Sudd. Expansion to the north was the only logical consequence. The Shilluk elders recount how they found a people there that they claim to have been culturally superior: the "Apfuny". These could have been no other than the Funj, the same people who would come to dominate much of northern Sudan. Little is known about the origins of the Funj, but most travelogues from the 18th and 19th centuries confirm that they were regarded as former natives of the White Nile. The Upper White Nile was their homeland, their "Nul". The Shilluk remember the encounter with the Funj as violent and ultimately, over the course of many battles, the Funj were defeated, those who remained were assimilated. The Shilluk would expand as far north as Eleis, while the Funj left the White Nile under their leader Amara Dunqas, who would eventually found the town of Sennar at the Blue Nile in 1504/5, build a large empire by expanding as far north as Dongola and convert to Islam. If these events happened as described above, it were the Shilluk under their legendary king Nyikang, who the Shilluk believe would live on in each succeeding king, who were directly responsible for the foundation of the Funj Sultanate. Litte is known about the Shilluk until the 17th century. During this period, the Funj were growing stronger in the Gezira and consolidated their position, pushing the remaining Dinka to the south-west, where they encountered the Shilluk. For much of the 17th century both people were engaged in bitter fighting, though it was this fighting that helped the Shilluk kingdom to centralize and develop proper state mechanisms, establishing a fixed capital at Fashoda (previously, each king had his own residence). The Funj Sultan Badi II (r. 1644/5-1681) married a Shilluk princess, who is said to have asked Badi II to help her people against the Dinka. Badi II was recorded to have expanded the influence of the Funj greatly not only in the Gezira, but also in Kordofan. At the White Nile, he established a garrison at Eleis. Stephanie Beswick even maintains that the Funj occupied the northern half of the Shilluk kingdom, the "Ger" province. However, a simple raid seems more likely, as just a few decades later, in 1684/5, when a great famine hit the country, the Shilluk were capable of conducting massive raids as far north as the confluence of the Blue and White Niles, destroying 17 Islamic schools in the process, thus dealing a great blow to the spread of Islam there. The fate of the Shilluk was not only intertwined with the Funj to the north, but also the Nuba Mountains to the west. The diverse population of the Nuba Mountains was still largely pagan, with Islam only being present among the elite in Taqali in the northeast. The Shilluk called them "Dongo", the "hill people". Contact between the two was simplified by a water course running between Kaka and Taqali. Supposedly, already Nyikang had married a Nuba princess, although there are also accounts of Shilluk raiding Nuba caravans. In any case, the Shilluk were allying themselves with the Nuba of Taqali and Jebel Liri, granting them access to the vast iron reserves of the Nuba Mountains. It was probably the mass production of iron weapons that granted the Shilluk their superiority over the Dinka. The Shilluk relationship with the Nuba remained close: intermarriages were still happening in the 18th century and Nuba participated in the election of the next Shilluk king. In the 1830's it was recorded that the Shilluk kingdom extended as far west as the "Shilluk hills", implying the eastern fringes of the Nuba Mountains. By the second half of the 18th century the once mighty Funj kingdom was declining and slowly disintegrating. The Shilluk seized the opportunity and became the de facto masters of the White Nile, which by this point was known as "Bahr Shilluk". Their canoes, which could transport as many as 12 warriors, were terrorizing the Muslim villagers and merchants to the north. Eleis, now a merchant town, had become a part of the kingdom. The relationship with the Sudanese Muslims to the north was not inherently violent, though, as trade was flourishing: the northerners and westerners, some even from as far as Darfur, traded iron, cattle and cloth for hides, slaves and ivory. Yet, two shadows were looming over the peak of Shilluk might: to the west, an ethnogenetic development saw the transformation of the Nuba of northern and central Kordofan from hilltop dwellers to a race of aggressive raiders claiming Arab descent, known collectively as Baqqara. Together with the northern Sudanese merchants, the Jallaba, they would ignite an era of brutal slave raids devastating southern Sudan. Although making already an appearance in the early-19th century White Nile, the Baqqara were yet lacking the firepower to subjugate the Shilluk and other Nilotic people. More dramatic was the arrival of the Turco-Egyptians in 1821, unifying much of Sudan in a modern state. Egypt was very interested in the ressources of the "Bahr Shilluk", in particular its timber. In 1826 it founded a shipyard at Manjara, roughly halfway between Eleis and Khartoum, and began to raid Shilluk territory. Yet, it failed to subjugate these formidable warriors, although they were armed with state-of-the-art weapons while the Shilluk merely had speards and shields. Yet, the latter were losing their hegemony over the White Nile, as Egyptian naval expeditions reached deep inside their territory. Another development was the growing of a large trading community in Kaka consisting of northern Muslims and a new generation of Shilluk merchants. Dissatisfied with the trade regulations imposed by the Shilluk king, they allied themselves with a Dongolese Nubian named Muhammad Khayr. Considering himself an Egyptian governor, he seized power of the former northern half of the Shilluk kingdom, while "reth" Kwat Kwer ruled in the south. Eventually, Muhammad Khayr was proclaimed as Shilluk king, though he would not embrace the pagan title "reth", but rather "makk", which traditionally referred to Muslim Sudanese petty kings. Whatever he called himself, he was in fact not interested in ruling, but rather he was a predator hunting for Shilluk slaves. Soon after the proclamation in 1863, the Egyptian government sent an army, deposed and eventually killed him and annexed the northern part of the kingdom. The rump state in the south, which was still ruled by king Kwat Ker, had been fully incorporated by 1871. The Shilluk "reth" was allowed to exist, but only as a figurehead without practical power. Although the Egyptian state had theoretically absolished slavery by the mid-19th century, the Shilluk country, by the blessing of the Egyptian governor of Fashoda, continued to be devasted by Baqqara and Ja'aliyin raiders. Samuel Baker noted in 1870 that the governor "had stolen many of their [Shilluk] women and children and had killed their people and he was generally plundering their country." As a result of this devastation, the Shilluk people, once said to number many hundred thousand people, were cleansed from the northern half of their former kingdom, restricting them to their current habitat in South Sudan.

I have been following your journey as you trail historical origin, migration and settlement of Luo nation across Africa and got educated in a good number of areas previously unknown to me. However, it is notable that as you cited that there are Luo communities in Chad and Central Africa, there is additional allegations that Luo DNA is found also in Cameroon, Nigeria and in lower population towards Ghana. These Luo communities lost their language and culture due to Islamisation and other political and military dominance of Hausa and Fulani. Two factors have been alluded to one is that in Cameroon there is a small community within central Cameroon that keeps aluru - (quail birds) that is called by the same name in most of the Luo nations and lends it's name to the Aluru groups of DRC/West Uganda. The most argued case to support Luo in Nigeria emanate from cultural and naming of the Igbo of Nigeria that is well illustrated in numerous novels by Elechi Amadi, China Achebe among others. In fact Amadi is also a common Luo name.

Interesting to note that the Shilluks' military defeat of the British is a historical fact that has generally been deliberately erased from historical memory yet it's significance is that it is possibly the most significant event which underwrote British rule in the Sudan ....thus rather than being in the form of direct control from London it took the form of an Anglo-Egytian administered territory... There are Luos in Congo Brazaville, Congo Zaire, Central African Republic, Chad, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Guine Conakry, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Gambia, Lower Mali & Mauritania; So it is a big community. One of the reasons the colonial masters decided to classify some Luo communities as "Bantus" was to cluster them out cóz number do scare. Of course, online trolls would make fun of this reality but it will never change. Again calling Luos with other mixing ""non-luos" is a mistake. Wategi, Ugu, Surwa, luo-suba and any of their siblings are Luos. A gig house will always be mixed. Kwame Nkumah family and Mnadi Azikiwe of Nigeria both hailed from the West wing of the Luo community. The total Luo population in Africa could hit around 110 million people.

@@KPtravels001 The Luo in their southward movement conquered , assimilated and intermarried with several groups . The Lango were among the groups that provided the Luo one of the toughest resistance in their Southward movement . The Luo prevailed and assimilated ,the Lango first linguistically, then in other areas as the Lango intermarried and adopted governance structures similar to Luo like having a Rwot or chiefdoms . Like Rwot Olet Apar . Okot P'Bitek a Uganda Luo-Acholi Poet ,Lawyer and Social Anthropologist wrote extensively on the intermarriage between the Luo-Acholi and Luo-Lango in his dissertations at Oxford University London in the 1960s . The Luo assimilated different groups including the Bantu Suba who migrated from present day Uganda to present day Kenya,Tanzania and were assimilated by Kenya Luo(Obama,Lupita Nyongo group)hence the Luo-Suba . The Luo Jo-bito clan replaced the Bachwezi dynasty of Bunyoro Kitara setting the stage for one of the most successful dynasties in present day Uganda the Luo-Babito . The Luo had skilled warriors like Owiny and Adhola who steered their settlements in Kenya and Tanzania . Kenya, Tanzania Luo are amalgamation of the groups from Uganda including Luo-Acholi, Luo-Padhola ,Luo-Langi, Luo-Alur etc and Kenya, Tanzania Bantu traces like Abaluhya,Abakuria,Abagusii and Abasuba(assimilated to Luo-Suba) . Historically Lango were a collection of ethno groups(Ateker) linked to Turkana ,Iteso, Toposa, Karamajong and etc but by the 15th century became subject to Luo influence and assimilation including intermarriage as revealed by present day DNA . The complexity of interactions between different Luo groups and Lango including Language and intermarriage forced historians and Anthropologists to refer to the group as Luo-Lango or Luo-Langi . Some historians and anthropologists still prefer distinguishing the groups . The Luo still refer to some Nilotic groups like the Kalenjin, Karamoja as Lango . Uganda president Milton Obote and Kenya VP Oginga Odinga were close friends during their days at Makerere and participated in forums to unite Luo peoples of Northeast ,North, Central and Africa (at least 20 million ) . Historically Lango were distinct but present DNA reveal that Lango, depending on family tree, have variations of Nilotic Luo DNA and Nilo-Hamitic Ateker . Some Lango therefore see themselves as distinct others see themselves as Luo . Historians and Anthropologists settle for Luo-Langi as a result of more than 500 years of interactions . Luo-Suba have same issue . Some see themselves as Luo , others as Suba , historians and anthropologists as Luo-Suba . The Luo also influenced and provided Baganda, Banyoro and Batoro rulership in the past .

On keen observation, i have my theory about Luo migration, i doubt very much if the Arab invasion as a factor of Luo migration, if you follow the luo history very well, Luos have never been defeated in any war and moved an inch outside their claimed land(Never been assimilated, we assimilate everyone we conquer). My next theory is that Luos migration has to do with their culture and mainly polygamy, that combined with their pride, mean that everytime thir is family disagreement in polygamous setup, one group has been forced to move because Luo pride don't let them compromise. Now if you include the luo extended families in those setups it becomes more complicated, a woman might bring her sisters children to a home they don't belong to, when the kids grow up they will have to move and find their own piece of land, thats my theory of luo immigration, pure disagreement and other Luo culture complications in family setups. kwero etc. i finish with a very important question, Who did the luos who moved marry?, our culture does not allow us to marry near relatives and we are the most liberal when it comes to marrying outside the luo race and luo father owns the rights, are migrated luos pure????, our pride is our downfall and King at the same time

mall correction concerning the Alur, Okoro proper are actually in Uganda. Some of their offshoots in the DRC include the Alur of War-Palara, Alur of PaNduru, Alur of Padea, etc. These can be called the Alur of the royal Atyak heritage. Within Okoro government REGION and not the CHIEFDOM We also have the chiefdom of Paidha, who are also of Atyak ancestry. We also have Alur from the noble clan of Ucibu, and many of them are in Congo, however the biggest contributions to the alur they have made include the chiefdom of Angal in congo, chiefdom of Juganda, etc. I have forgotten the proper history but they were the Luo descendants of one of Nyipir's brothers (I think Thiful)Then there are also the Jonam and those of Kwong'a (Pa Kwon'ga) who are along the water on the Ugandan side. Pa Kwon'ga are mainly around Lake Albert going towards Pakwach and Pakwach has the Jonam. The reason this is usually confusing is because politically as the state of Uganda, the highlands are reffered to as Okoro county, regardless of the fact they contain more than Okoro Chiefdom (it also has Paisha and Padea). Padyere is the belt in the plains between Okoro highlands and the Jonam which is why they have that name Padyere (of the middle) then finally we have Jonam who are at the water's edge but politically include both the Jonam proper and those of Pa Kwon'ga and a few of other smaller chiefdoms that are traditionally affiliated to Okoro the Chiefdom. If you still have the time and the opportunity to travel through Uganda, make it a point to go to Okoro in Uganda and get the story too. You can actually go to Warr/Atyak where the King is and find people willing to show the differences you might observe in Okoro. Speaking as a proud son of Okoro 😁 Btw for out Acoli brothers the best way to explain this is that Okoro is like Payira to the Acoli.

Request? Could you do a video about the Shilluk Kingdom's influence in Sudan & how they defended against the Turco-Egyptian expansion? I have tagged you in my latest video, use that footage as your intro. Check the comment I posted as well. There was a point where Muslims from the North sought refuge among the Shilluk since the Ottomans were expanding their empire. The Shilluk also formed alliances with the Funj to push back the Dinka militarily since they were invading territories surrounding them. A very strong Kingdom indeed. In 1684, the kingdom organized the looting of Arab territories in the North, and when the Sennar kingdom disappeared in the 18th century, the political power of the Shilluk increased significantly. The kingdom controlled the caravans and set up a shuttle system for merchants wishing to cross the Nile. After the decline of the Sennar empire, the king of Egypt decided to conquer Sudan. The Sultanate of Funj, a great military ally of the Shilluk, surrendered to the Egyptians who were supported by the Turks and led by Ismail Pasha. Having no more ramparts, the Shilluk were forced to face the Ottomans on their own and by 1826, the Northern part of the Kingdom suffered its first loss when the Dinka and Nuer crossed the Sobat River and took the Nile. 1865 marked the end of this political entity as a kingdom. Nowadays, its power is relegated to the simple rank of a village in South Sudan and its political authority is no more than a traditional chief.

You have missed out the assimilated Luo, some of whom reside in Uganda and Kenya, assuming the identification of Bantu, though their elders use the Luo language to discuss sensitive issues. Since you have said you are a researcher, I leave you to extend your research in that direction too.
