Warren Buffet has also highly suggested a simple 2 fund portfolio consisting of nothing more than any low cost: S&P 500 Index Fund, and U.S. Short Term Government Bonds Index Fund. He recommends a 90/10 allocation, but judge allocation by your personal risk level.

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got to talking about investment and money. Most of my investment is in my retirement accounts with my work but I have some stocks I play around with also. I have about 30 different stocks in my etrade account, some with 30 or more shares each, and most just bought on a whim or poor selection criteria. Overall I have pretty much broke even for the total value of $4000 or so. I recently started a new brokerage account at sofi and I have about $20 or so a week going to it. When I get ready to pick a stock I just buy one share of each company, but I'm picking a stock with dividend payout between 1-5%, and other positive numbers. I use a stock screener to narrow down the list each time I get ready to buy a stock. I like sofi because I can buy cheaper stocks sometimes without worrying about reverse split fees.

By biggest problem with the S&P 500 Index fund is the fact that a third of the value comes from a couple stupendously overpriced stocks, and thus you are overpaying, ensuring little to no return for years to come. The S&P has returned zero for decades multiple times, example: S&P had 860 pts in 1968, and only got back to that in 1993, 25 years later. A quarter century of zero real returns. Not saying it will happen again, but it defenitely could.

If you’re going the Joel Greenblatt route, owning 8 stocks (not all concentrated in the same sector) mitigates ~80% of diversification risk, while owning 500 stocks eliminates 99% of that risk. In other words, his viewpoint is that 8-10 stocks is mostly sufficient, and your diversification should come from owning various asset classes (stocks, bonds, real estate, gold, etc.) rather than trying to achieve diversification in the stock market alone. Not saying this is the best way to think about it, but certainly comes from a guy with a solid track record! Also not to say this is the best route for achieving maximum returns-most would probably argue putting all your equity holdings in a market index fund achieves both diversification and the best possible returns in the long run.

I own 3 ETF’s and 4 stocks. I would consider myself a passive investor. The 3 ETF’s are in my Roth which I can only contribute 6k a year. I’m thinking about buying two of the same ETF’s in a separate account and contribute more after I reach my 6k max.
@jacobstolte88652 жыл бұрын
My advice is always to keep the majority in ETFs that cover multiple sectors. Then have a couple stocks, as a small percentage, picked out that you feel personally attached to or interested in. That way you can mitigate a lot of the risk but also have a personal touch to your portfolio. I feel this mitigates some of the emotional downsides or disinterest people have with investing. Also helps with the urge to constantly buy/sell with fluxes in the market.
