How did Metallica become the most hated band in metal? Some of what I look at:
* Metallica's roots in the thrash metal and tape trading scene of the 80's
* How the black album was viewed as a sellout
* Their lawsuit against Napster
* 2003's "St Anger" and Lars Ulrich's snare drum
* Their documentary "Some Kind Of Monster"
* How "Death Magnetic" helped Metallica recover

I suspect the black album was one of the most influential albums of its time - not so much on traditional metal but on rock in general, and for exactly the same reasons some fans hated it. It helped tear down the boundary around metal and showed bands that they can succeed in that sort of mixed genre.
@Hekaterian
@Hekaterian Жыл бұрын
People hated the black album because it didn't reflect the hardcore values that thrash represented at the time. Metal back then wasn't just a style of music. It was a lifestyle. Hardcore thrash fans have always looked down on glam rock and metal fans as being "pussies". If you were into hardcore thrash then it said something about your personality, mainly that you were a hardcore person yourself. When Metallica stopped sounding like Metallica and started to sound more like Motley Crue of course the old school fans were pissed off and called them sellouts. They betrayed the hardcore lifestyle and values that came with the thrash scene which also set the thrash scene apart from other genres to make money, not a very hardcore or anti establishment thing to do.Old school punk and thrash were always set apart from the mainstream for a reason. It is because the mainstream was considered to be an enemy of sorts to be rebelled against. The mainstream represents "the man" and the man fucking sucks...It wasn't so much that Metallica's style of music changed that pissed people off as much as it was that people felt like Metallica had betrayed what hardcore thrash represented in the first place...Imagine how pissed off and disappointed people would be if Black Sabbath traded in their signature sound and dark lyrical content to sound like The Backstreet Boys because they wanted to appeal to the boy band audience in an attempt to make more money...It's kinda the same thing when it comes to Metallica changing so much.

@@Hekaterian I agree with everything you said. However people that listen to metal and think that they're "hardcore"...I kinda laugh at that. I'm a logger, work around yarder logging in particular. I bring this up because it's uniquely physically challenging, even compared to most typical physical labor jobs. Not only that, you have to be willing to sacrifice yourself with potentially agonizingly long commutes every single day, and also get up unusually early in the morning. I know yarder rigging guys that listen to pop/country that are WAY more hardcore than any metal head I've ever known. Not saying I like pop/country because I hate it with a passion, but I've gotta give those guys credit where it's due.

It’s not an entrancing as ‘Meeting People Is Easy’, but it is a very candid and seemingly honest look at the reality of being massively successful, rich AF rockstars. As fans we often hear about the machinations behinds the curtains of success in the music industry - SKOM showed just how messed up that kind of success can be to manage and maintain.

I listened to it on a moment in my life, where I was really rock bottom. The album transformed into some sort of soundtrack then and underlined my emotions at that perticluar moment. I actually like St. Anger. Yeah the sound quality is terrible. But I was happy they got heavy again. People complained when they got soft, then complained when they got heavy again. I didn't get it. I was so happy for some aggression and speed after the crap of I Disappear. It was an album I used to work out to for a while. And people act like Death Magnetic is so much better. But Death Magnetic also has some sound quality issues. Not to mention it was put on CD at the highest possible volume making the entire recording sound like shit. I know that's the trend with music now days, but it's a terrible trend. Death Magnetic sounds just as noisy as St. Anger. The only good thing about it is the guitar solos.

@@johnwilliams8130 well it’s your opinion that they only did “classical intros”. I think even though fade to black, sanitarium, and one are progressive songs that take a journey to a heavier place than they began, I consider them ballads. It’s just what I call them when talking about these albums. Not pure thrash metal songs. I think the core identity of those songs are the ballad sections, especially when contrasted with songs like dyers eve and disposable heroes or whatever. It’s based on how we personally define ballads in the context of Metallica pre black album. It’s subjective. All good.

Metallica might be seen as overrated by some, but I don't think they're a band that anyone truly HATES. No matter what anyone thinks of the black album, Load, ReLoad, or St. Anger, they know that deep down in their hearts that the first 4 albums are legendary and there's no taking away from that. But I think it's also because of that that people are as critical of Metallica and their albums as they are, because they set the bar so high.

I hate it when people claim they’re “poser metal”. Dude, they literally pioneered a whole new wave of thrash metal, I know bands like venom, exciter, and Motörhead played a big role, but so did Metallica, their first four albums were definitely speed/thrash metal and thanks to them, it inspired a whole new wave of extreme metal in the 80’s, they might’ve watered down in the 90’s but who cares? If they stood sounding the same, people would’ve complained about it, I don’t blame them for wanting to change their sound and attract a more mainstream audience, people gotta make money somehow, you gotta live off of something.

The music industry screwed themselves with their greed in the late 90s and part of Napster's appeal was a reaction to that. Linkin Park's second album retailed for 25 dollars and was 37 minutes long. I have mad respect for them for the same reasons you concluded your video with. It takes guts to do what they’ve done, and their mistakes have humbled them over the years. A prime example was their appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show, where they mentioned they weren’t great musicians when compared to Jimmy’s house band, the Roots. Before they went to a commercial break there was a segment of everyone playing Enter Sandman on various random instruments, and Kirk was freaking out cuz he couldn’t do his part on melodica, but a member of the Roots told him to just chill and have fun with it. He relaxed after that.

I'm pretty much in the minority. I enjoyed St. Anger... The Unnamed Feeling is a fantastic expression of psychological trauma. Some Kind of Monster is one of my favorite films and gives us a look into who Metallica are as people. The album came along during a time in my life when I was functioning off 3 hours of sleep a night, going from my day job (working 3a- noon) and then driving half an hour to my tattoo apprenticeship and working until 10 or 11pm and doing it all over again daily. I felt the lyrics to Frantic. The Unnamed Feeling spoke to me when I was going through a breakup and felt incredibly suicidal. The entire album was what I was going through in those days, and I think you have to be in a really dark place in order to truly feel it.

I get laid off for periods in the winter typically, when I sleep in alot, but other than that I've been doing this for 11 years. I blame mtv for pushing that sellout bullshite. Load and reload are still heavy and well produced albums. Very tight musicianship and then growing up,personally I find it more interesting than slayers output after 98. MTV in hindsight really sucked in some regards as it kind of was biased therefore making you biased especially in the mid 90s if you didn’t have internet access and couldn’t find and listen to the music yourself. When I finally was able to afford internet I found there were a plethora of bands and Albums that were actually very good that mtv shat all over.

Must have seen the same show (July 1988 for me). Metallica was the third act of five in the Monsters of Rock Tour, headlined by Van Halen (with Sammy Hagar). I knew a guy with a Metallica t-shirt, that was it. Most of the crowd was there for Van Halen and The Scorpions, but the Metallica Army was all over the place with their t-shirts and dedication. Thrash metal wasn't my thing at the time and I actually left to get a hot dog and soda during "Master of Puppets." It just seemed like a wall of sound with a really repetitive little chorus. Later, while in the Army stationed in West Germany, I bought "Ride the Lightning," learned to drum many of the songs, and considered "For Whom the Bell Tolls" our theme song as we rolled our M1 tanks into Iraq and Kuwait during Desert Storm. The Black Album was where they really broke through. Love "Now That We're Dead" and glad they "did it their way" to quote Frank Sinatra.

I was 11 when the black album came out. I don't remember anybody hating on it, but I didn't really hang out with older kids. The hate started with Load and Reload, which weren't great but I still bought them and still listen to them today. St Anger was absolutely rage inducing for a lot of people, including me. I never bought that album or anything after that. I quickly lost interest in the band as metalcore and nu metal were exploding. The thing about the Napster controversy that pissed me off was that I had seen them live by then and listened to a whole bunch of live bootlegs. There were times when James Hetfield asked the crowd if they had the new album and if they didn't, they should go to the record store and steal it. So Metallica doesn't care if you steal from Tower Records or Everyday Music, because Metallica already got paid for this album copies, but don't steal from them digitally. It was really hypocritical and made me hate them.

Just like they did with Load (i.e. grunge/alt-rock). I personally really liked the evolution but I’m not exclusively a metal/trash fan. I’m glad they decided to change their sound, otherwise they may have been putting out the same stuff for decades (Megadeath anyone)?

As a little kid in Argentina, having napster Audiogalaxy and such software allowed me to discover a lot of artists and records that simply wouldnt reach my country or where hard (and expensive) to come by I remember for example downloading Master Of Puppets in 2002 and turning me into a metallica fan at the time. Went on to buy a few metallica albums and see them a few year afterwhen they toured Buenos Aires

It's crazy to think even when napster was going on hip hop artists were still selling a million records their debut week Eminem & 50 cent Some can say napster help some artist get way more well known to other fans that otherwise might not have heard them imo!

Usually I don’t agree with all of your “hot takes” but this is spot on. I was one of “those guys” I kinda liked the sound of Enter Sandman as a single and bought the disc when it came out and was severely disappointed , I took it to a CD Exchange spot the same day. True story. I also tossed out the weak covers cd the one with turn the page on it ... right out my car . Yeah years later I was still pissed. But dude quit talking about “cool kids” and the “popular crowd” I sure asF never listened to any type of music cuz it was flavor of the month.

While I can't excuse any of the recent controversy, I'm still a fan, Ride the Lightning is my favorite album along with for whom the bell tolls being my favorite song. Also when I was 11 I was properly introduced to them through wwe in 2003. As a young angsty kid st. Anger was pretty cool to me which lead me to the rest of the discography. I love their music and probably always will. Love the channel keep it coming finn.

@@nerdingout3560 He's saying that the recent "controversy" is ideological neuroticism spoon-fed to the masses. The only reason why making arm gestures, wearing Iron Crosses, or using "the 'N' word" is deemed offensive is because of engineered mass media hysteria. If you fall for that you have no self-respect as you affirm that all your values come to you from "woke" media conditioning.

@@hishamhilal8332 I’ll translate his reply: yes, I fall for that bull$h¡t. I don’t know a world where ppl are allowed to do questionable things or things that are considered ~offensive~ by modern standards without calling for scalps on social media, or, if I actually AM old enough to remember how the world functioned since the dawn of civilization until a couple years ago, I need to preface any statement of positivity with a disclaimer that I am ALSO a good, decent, moral person who does not condone what ppl did 10+ years ago when the world was a different place with different standards and rules, and need to make sure anyone reading this knows how morally pure I am by publicly stating that I do not agree or condone past behavior, lest the ravenous, unstable, bloodthirsty, ideological mob comes for me

The death of radio and MTV really worked out well for Metallica. They could go back to making 8 minute thrash songs, which is what they do best, with no pressure to make radio friendly and constrained pop metal.

I can see why fans hated their shifts: giant shifts in almost anything are a bit difficult to accept for people. That's why as a musician you kinda have to slowly introduce your various musical tastes earlier on to your fans. Put all the stuff you consider your signature sound, AND also the experimental shit you're also interested in maybe exploring in the future, if you have that kind of foresight. This way, you're not pegged as one type of artist, and fans will not feel like you completely abandoned them. You SLOWLY introduce concepts to people. A slow progression.

Makes me think of Voivod who in the '80s gradually became more technical and psychedelic with every album, and most fans loved it, even though they became less thrashy in the process.

Metallica is my older brother's favorite band, so I grew up listening to a lot of it and I've always been a fan. Lightning, Puppets, and Justice are iconic albums, love them all. The black album is my favorite. I think Load is a lot better than people give it credit for. It has the best production of any Metallica album and there are some truly great songs on it (Bleeding Me is my favorite). ReLoad has 3 good songs and the rest kind of sucks. No Leaf Clover off S&M is amazing. St. Anger wouldn't be so bad if it just had a normal friggin snare. Death Magnetic is a great comeback, lots of great songs but the production is awful. Hardwired has some decent stuff too.

Agree the production on Load is peak 90's. The album as I recall went straight to the last seconds of available time on a standard CD. I think at the time they were trying to push the envelope on how much quality you can get out of a CD. I think they nailed the brief.

Maybe I'm just an abberation, but Load and Reload are two of my favorite Metallica albums. I know they don't quite "fit," but that's part of what I love about them. They're complex and risky in ways that no Metallica album was before or has been since. And I honestly just like most of the songs on them.

There is something wrong though, Metallica was already the most hated Thsrah Metal band before the Black Album, cause you see, they did ballads, 3 of them, not only that, but they had already slowed down at the point of MoP where they were far more of a Heavy Metal band (traditional) rather than Thrash, there is interviews of James and Cliff talking about the fans calling them sell outs, now people at time try to delete that from collective memorie cause bad mouthing Cliff after his sad demise became a cardinal sin. One thing that had played a big role in Metallica´s spark in popularity lately is the past of time and aging like fine wine. Word, both Loads albums have really good apreciation nowdays and even a lot of support for st anger, not to say Lars was right
