Welcome to another vlog - we are in Yorkshire heading south from Skipton to Bingley to see the famous 5 rise locks.
Along the way I show you what I'm burning in my little Boatman stove, enjoy some amazing scenery and try to keep positive during the most depressing days boating ever!
SORRY ABOUT THE SOUND LEVELS - again!! I just can't seem to get it right when it uploads... Planning to upgrade software (using iMovie) at some stage but now I have a shiny new Røde lapel mic hopefully that will help - but any tips please let me know!
If you'd like a shoutout on the video, join the 'Crank It Crew', receive patron-only updates or simply just want to encourage me to make more videos, you can do so via my Patreon page -

Alternatively you can go through my PayPalMe page -

I hate adverts and won't allow them on my videos, but I am trying to save up for better equipment (not to mention the huge overheads that come with the essential Pub of the Week segment) so every little helps! Hang on that's an advert isn't it...
Spolier: Unfortunately for reasons beyond explanation there is no pub of the week this week. And for that I am deeply sorry.
All music: Me (except the one at 2:17 - by my brother Charlie)
Anyway thanks for your support it means a lot! 8^}

Bingley by the cut! My old home town. Grow up about 3miles from the five rise. Lovely place to take a stroll from there into town. There used to be a foot tunnel from the canal under the railway into Bingley. The tunnel was known locally as “Treacle cock ally” but my old, passed on gran said it was originally called “Trickle clock ally” due to the old clock with water running over it from a leaky tunnel roof. The tunnel has long since gone when the bypass was put in and replaced by a foot bridge. Aaaagh lament the good old days of Bingley and going for a pint in the Thalidomide Arms.

Just subscribed great video (will check out your other videos) I just love Yorkshire spent a year working at LBA airport when on my big OE (Overseas Experience what Kiwi & Australians do when your young) spent a lot of time exploring the countryside and the wonderful pubs (under 50p a pint in those days 1978-1979) I know from a recent UK visit we are talking pounds now) Did a 11 day canal trip a few years ago from Lower Hyford up to Warwick and return with 4 grandsons & my son and his wife we hired a 69ft boat which had heaps of room but was a bit tricky on some of the bends and it was summer well for a couple of days so I know what you mean when its wet and being winter at the moment rather you than me are you spending the winter on the boat cheers from NZ Brian
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Brian wow thats great, really glad the video brought back those lovely memories (especially about pints being 50p!) I am indeed spending winter on the boat, same as many others - although I suspect roughly 50% of boats in total are only inhabited in summer

Hi Robbie, you’ve entertained me and my wife for a while now, we love watching your vlogs. So it’s payback time, I have quite a lot of ash logs that are clean and been seasoned for over two years. I’ve even got a few bags of smokeless coal. You can have it all for free when you pass by Birmingham I’ll even cut them to size if you tell me the length and bring them to you. There’s no rush as they’ll stay there for years unless you want them. Keep up the vlogs, Eric.

I understand, no need to rush, I'm sure the right one will emerge soon enough. GoPro - yes I have, but unfortunately the results weren't too impressive - lots of camera shake and poor light capture but apparently there are settings that can be changed so I will look into it...

I thought the white lion pub at Kildwick might get pub of the week its a great pint, good food and there is a dog that sits up on a tall stool at the bar!
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 5 жыл бұрын
I think it’s the only pub there isn’t it! The problem for me is always atmosphere, and on my visit to that pub I felt it a bit depressing, no one there when I went in, the bar lady not very welcoming, pub ‘garden’ was a state, food was ok, the decor more aimed at a gastropub audience; generally not for me and not worth mentioning I thought. But that was over 2 1/2 years ago now - sounds like it’s changed a lot since!!

Another great Vlog, Robbie. I love them. The scenery in this one was particularly spectacular and the rain was no bother from this side of the monitor :-) Nearly bought a 65'er earlier this year and your coverage of the L&L has persuaded me to restrict myself to 62'. Another great video Robbie - I could almost feel the cold coming through the computer screen! Brrrrrrrr! :) Amazing scenery though and the misty scenes were great. BTW - when you're using the suction cup with your GoPro camera I'd really recommend having some kind of backup leash or buoyancy attached to it - just in case you knock it off while going under a bridge, etc. You really don't want to be fishing about the bottom of the canal for your lovely, new camera! Keep up the good work :)

Grate vids Robbie make no wonder your cold you come from Dorset to Yorkshire in November and your right on top of the Pennines You should come in June July August and stay a couple of weeks, You are quite well served by trains in Skipton as you can take the Leeds-Settle-Carlisle line to Leeds and then the main east coast trains to London but come again but you have to contend with all the tourists so it gets quite packed

Cheers for commenting Tommey and yes I would love to come back in summer. Although tbh at the moment it is colder down south than it is up here in Yorkshire! Did you ever do the Anderton Boat Lift? Me and my mates used it in the early 80's when we went on barge holiday, 5 Liverpool scallies and I was the oldest at 18, lol. The lift was decrepit then, when we used it I believe it was the last year it was in use before it had a major overhaul that took several years.

@@RobbieCumming yeah that's right it was the Weaver. If you want to travel thru the backyard of chemical factories for a good 24 hours then the river Weaver is for you. Saying that all those chemical plants are probably closed down these days, as I say it was a good 30 years + when we went. We were headed for Wales. Going over that Llangollen Aqueduct is an experience, I have never been so frightened in all my life. It must be nearly 200 feet in the air, and the side next to the boat, IE the non towpath side, you are literally inches from the edge, I fucking shat me'sen, I can't emphasise how terror inducing it was, and it's long too so it takes IDK 10-15 minutes to cross.

Absolutely beautiful countryside! But why would you need to book ahead to open those locks?? Well next time you'll get thru!
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 5 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure it’s because the CRT lock them so that they can control the water usage, and maybe protect from (presumably windlass-wielding) vandals, sorry I didn’t explain properly!

Robbie, Hi. Great vids. Question: how did you operate that swing bridge at 11:04 ? You were moored on the other side, how did you get back to your boat after opening.. thanks R & T

Hey! Well to be honest I can’t remember!! I have such a bad memory, hence the idea for these vlogs in the first place! I think it was attached to a chain, so once you’ve pushed it open you can then pull it back across. 8^)

Thanks for the prompt reply Robbie. We're looking at doing Leeds to Skipton and back in early December and it looks like this will be a challenge - having to book Bingley 3 & 5 for example. Any tips or suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks Roy and Tanya

Just watch the vlogs, there’s loads of tips there, but as long as you aren’t in a mad rush you should be fine - although you will need to first check the stoppages lists on the Canal and River Trust website!

wear more layers, I often wear 10 layers, under a great big, 100% waterproof, nonwoven, vinyl or polyurethane rainsuit. I find anything woven like gore-tex will eventually soak through. It's a bit sweaty and you feel like the Michelin Man, but it's toasty warm in just about anything. Ski goggles might help too.

Forgive my ignorance, land dweller here, but how do you operate a swing bridge? You moor your boat on one side but the swing bridge appears to be on the opposite side? Have you mastered the art of walking on water? Please explain.
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tazonsax no I wish I could walk on water - that would be very handy for when you can't moor on the right side (which is most times - and due to landowners not wanting to give up their land for bollards/landing space). Looking at 9:35 on this video - this was filmed after mooring the 'wrong' side and then what I did was to just give the bridge a hopeful shove so it would open enough to pass through! Most of my videos have swing bridges in them if you wanted to see different kinds!

Exciting, yep more info than ever to soak up these days - best way to learn (imho) is to borrow someone else's boat for a while if you can, or join local facebook boat groups and offer to help out other boaters (we always appreciate help!). Thank you so much for supporting the vlog and welcome aboard! 8^)

Looking to help out on the canals a little more on my days off and currently looking for a new career within the canal world. Armed with a new CV I'm visiting as many marinas and yards as possible. Figure you don't know until you ask and a good excuse to see meet folks and see some nice boats. Happy Xmas!
