Very interesting, used to work at Tarleton by the canal - understand the River Douglas is also called the Asland. The docks at Tarleton used to be a very busy port bring in boats from Cumberland before the canal the River Douglas was navigable. Thanks again.

Great video pity your crossing was cancelled . We bought our boat 2 months ago from St Marys Marina at Ruffird it's a beautiful spot . We took our boat to the Lancaster canal where it is now moored but on the back of a wagon as we are only novices and were not ready for the ribble link yet . Look forward to your next update

Decided I'd watch all your KZbin vlogs from the beginning as I've only seen the BBC series on TV since it started. There's just so much historical & general information I never knew! This one stood out because my little home town of Kendal was mentioned 😂 i think Canal head was the end of the route until around 1944 when it was no longer needed. So fascinating!

Thanks Matt great to hear! Yeah, it was all down to wind being too strong, but also my engine - I was told last minute by lock keepers that I'd struggle to make it before the tide got too low - and also the time I had to go across and come back left me with only a day on the Lancaster - not worth it even if allowed to cross. Not to worry, we'll be back!!
@mjallenuk8 жыл бұрын
Ahhh you see it's less of a concern if the risks outweigh the worth it/uber cool factor... It's a careful balance but it's completely understandable. What was up with your macbook in the end? Dust or just needed a software tidyup? I'm a little keen to know more about your engine and so on. You don't see lots and lots of those Listers these days. Do you feel its underpowered or could the prop be sized up to give you more umph because you've not got enough high end revs? Sorry... I'm killing time before work. lol

I have to agree with you that the Stork is a good choice for pub of the week. Sadly 13 months or so ago they had a big fire that almost destroyed the pub. However, it is being restored and has the roof back on and the windows back in. News on their Facebook page: (3) The Stork at Conder Green | Facebook If you make it up to the Lanky give me a shout. I will come and open the locks for you (wink). No seriously I have just completed a thorough walking of every section of the canal from Kendal to Preston, the Link Canal and the tramway link as well as Lancaster Canal South End. Walton Summit Branch to Wigan Top Lock. There are more than a few interesting things I could show you that are easily missed.

the curse of the swing bridges - luckily at my mooring on the Leeds Liverpool have three miles of open countryside with none of these so can make a 6 mile round trip. When I go further I wait for someone else to go through - lucky I have plenty of time. Problem is the electric bridges (like at Apperley Bridge and a couple East of Skipton) carry such busy roads there's no way motorists would wait for you to tie your boat on and have it pulled through. Suspect road rage type consequences.

I don't bother with the tying to the bridge as I am not skilful enough. :D I usually pull the boat in on the opposite side to the bridge workings by the bollards, grab my bow rope and walk across the bridge with the rope, passing it through the bridge bars is necessary. Open the bridge and pull the boat near enough to me to climb on. Walk down the gunwales to the stern and drive the boat through. Stop when the stern just passes the bridge, jump off with stern rope, close the bridge. This is assuming of course that there is at least a tiny piece of land in the workings side in which to jump on and off. The ones on the Peak Forest Canal and Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Onion have one bollard on each side of the workings end of the bridge, as a token gesture to single handers ;) Maybe this is not possible where you are in this video. BTW, I agree, help is really nice but there's nothing like single handing these tricky situations. A great sense of achievement.

Some time during the winter I watched some magnet fishing videos in the canal system.One thing that this guy kept hauling out of the canal, near the locks, was the ‘key’ used for cranking the lock doors open and closed. In this video of Robbie’s I noted with concern how he, one handedly turned his small key and felt that all it would take is a slight slip and it would fall into the canal. Ll you need is a string or (better yet, a leather loop firmly attached to the key which you would wrap around your wrist before you got off your longboat and it should remain secure until you get back aboard and secure it in it’s designated spot. Unless you actually like stress !!!!

Rick Stebbings hi Rick it's a shame to hear that so I won't reply after this, just a quick one though there is an old saying which goes "don't be a dick" , this guy has clearly put a lot of time into this video and it's not that nice if you comment slagging it off, so like I said you if don't like him don't watch it. Happy cranking !!!!!
