I can appreciate a good KZbinr's video. All the money in camera gear, time setting up and documenting every little detail, and editing. Editing iam sure takes up a good bit of that time aswell and being creative. I can't believe it weighed in at 1964lbs. Just... wow man! This build has gotten me so excited to see, can only imagine how good all this hard work feels this far along.

Dude that is impressive, shaving that much weight is a lot. The rough calculation is that every 8lbs consumes one hp. I know that is a very standard throw at the wall number, but that’s gaining roughly 125hp just on weight alone. If you end up with a car 1000lbs lighter.

@@righthoekstra so the uprights are kind of what connect everything together in terms of suspension, hubs, wheels, and brakes. So they are unsprung. And the A-arms are a portion of the mass on the shocks, but I think that's distributed with its connection with the chasis too. I'll let a mechanical engineer chime in there 🙂

Lexan rear window, side rears, leave the door glass and windshield for practicality. Carbon side mirrors and smaller. There’s a good bit of weight in the steel uprights go billet. The light weight seats is also a easy option I think your current is quite heavy. Look at lighter horn and wiper set up if you still have them.

I hadn't really been following til I listened to the HP academy podcast, dude I totally get it now. Holy shit what a savings. This is a perfect example of my philosophy on weight savings which is to knock out the biggest things first. For example, if you wanted to build a lightweight race car with no other constraints or goals, a small car with a two stroke snowmachine engine is the ultimate, you can pull massive massive weight out of the drivetrain. To some degree, that's what you've done here! Very cool shit. You've got a car with glass, steel suspension, very normal componentry that's easily fabbed, replaced, serviced with just a massive massive savings. Excellent.

This episode made me look up the specs on my '72 MGB-GT. I know that the factory weight is just over 2400lbs and my sense was that is was smaller than the Ferrari, but that could have been because of the blockier shape. But my sense was correct, my car has a 1" shorter WB, is about 14" shorter overall (much shorter front and rear overhangs) and 7" narrower. It is 6" taller though (the GT is a 3 door hatchback). Interestingly despite being smaller, 4 6-4 250lb frame fits just fine, something that I do not believe would be true with the 308. An 800lb difference in weight is pretty amazing, especially when you consider that the MG engine is all cast iron and quite heavy, the alloy 3.5 V8 from a Range Rover weighs about the same as the 1.8L B series 4. A GM 60 degree V6 like the 2.8 from the Fiero or 3.1/3.4 from the Camaro only weighs about 65lbs more. Ferrari definitely could have benefited from some Lotus like attention to weight.

Nice job Mike. I can’t help but wonder if that one scale is still bad though. The low reading moved with the scale…unless that scale is short, you’d think the light corner would stay in the same location. I hope not, but a quick test of a known weight would confirm. Good luck!

Congrats on the weight. As the build progresses I am becoming more curious for the next video. Building and filming is great quality. Probably go for Lexan 3mm, the weight save is huge as I know of earlier builds I have done. Doors of carbon you can make yourself. You can find how in lots of KZbin videos Saves a lot of money since you have the originals to copy. Nicest is that you get the moulds! Keep up the good work greetings Walter

Working in aerospace really drives home the value of saved weight. Every single person I work with in the field is trying to shave every corner, eliminate un-necessary components and exploring lighter materials. It gives a new perspective to performance and fuel savings that can be designed into something without actually doing anything to increase power output or powerplant efficiency. I might watch the channel to try and escape work a little, but seeing your true joy in getting surprisingly low numbers makes it worth it. Much better than disappointment in not making your target.

Love it! Chasing weight on a race car is an exponential cost curve. It starts out cheap, removing unnecessary items, then gets more expensive, replacing really heavy items for lighter components, then gets absurd expensive chasing pounds by replacing 'light' items with lighter items lol. Good luck my man, I love this build so much.

What a great result! I’m a bit weight obsessed when it comes to cars as it’s key to increasing all round performance. Power to weight, unsprung mass, rotational mass, polar moment of inertia, etc! I agree with the areas of the car that could lose some more weight but hold off on suspension components until you are dialled in. It’s not too expensive to remake steel arms for geometry improvements but to have aluminium machined is not a cheap endeavour!

A late view today because I was stuck at the office, but hey, my merch also got here! Having a great evening opening the package and watching the episode. Man I've gotten so used to seeing the car in it's current state, that flashback to it's original form looks so foreign. It's come a long way! Super stoked that it came to such a low weight, even a predicted weight under your ideal weight! This thing is going to rip around the track. I'm not sure I'd go down the super weight savings rabbit hole just yet myself though. It'd get pricey fast. Definitely agree with your choice of wired scales though. A common thing in engineering is to cut down the amount of failure points, and a wireless set would just add a ton of them. Plus it's much easier/cheaper to replace damaged cables than an circuit board assembly!

Weight reduction in a racing car has a recursive effect. E.g., coming in 400lbs light means the suspension, brakes, even the chassis, are considerably over-engineered, each dealing with significantly less stress than they were designed to do. For me, that points the finger for additional reduction squarely at those parts. Wheels, control arms would be top of my list, each bringing multiple advantages. Congrats on this milestone.

Just to throw this out there, body panels can be remade. If you take a negative mold off the original panel it's easy and worth it to remake those panels from carbon fiber or another composite. I know carbon is expensive but it's the lightest of the composites. With 3M panel bond or their chassis weld bond epoxy you can shave at least another 350lbs off from the replacement of the metal panels from the build. I won't fault you if you decide against it. That's a massive undertaking for an already long build project. It's also really expensive and I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to deal with any of that. Just consider the experience of remaking the doors. It's easy to take negative molds of the outer skin, the inside structure, and even the door card which looks super sick. Throttle Stop Garage's channel has a playlist on an old Volvo which is being rebuilt from composite except for the frame and chassis. It's an interesting process to watch...
