I worked over 45 years in the field, for a large Union shop, in one of the most expensive markets in the US, the San Francisco Bay Area. Seems like we were close to your prices, and could put in a whole heating system, including ductwork, flue, gas line, etc, for 9000. I retired in 2006. Man, I hope prices haven’t gone up that much.

Good vidio, I would say one thing to you though. Your pretty young. Take care of yourself. It’s good to give someone a good deal, my brother warned me about being to cheap years ago. I thought he was crazy. Now here I am a lot older now. My body hurts, it’s harder to do what I used to. Take care of yourself don’t sell yourself short. Be fair as it sounds like you are. My brother told me if I wasn’t careful I would just be known as the guy that was cheap. Man was he rite. Wish I would have listened to him years ago.

I did watch a couple of you other videos…thank you for doing them. I have a 20 year old 96% in my attic of course, that was on its way out functioning wise. I am putting my house on the market next week…and I wanted everything to be fully functional. I have generally always done things like this myself…although this is the first furnace replacement. I have the old one out and waiting on an inexpensive rope hoist to help me lower old one, and raise the new one. Your videos helped me decide quickly this was something I could easily do, and not let it become a negotiable item during the sale. What also helped was getting a bid from a local contractor for replacement. Cheapest bid was 10.5k for a single stage furnace! I ordered a two stage, multi speed Goodman online for 1550.00. It will be here next week, and I will get it installed. I like what you said about it not being “Rocket Science “…I say that all the time. I am not taking away anything from the trades…I respect true professionalism. My job may not be as nice looking as the pros…but I am confident it will be functional and safe. It just bothers the heck out of me that a local contractor can justify charging that much…knowing full well they aren’t paying the people who actually do the work an exorbitant amount of money. One would also think that a larger company would be more competitive pricing wise….higher overhead…but far greater volume. Anyway…thank you for your videos…if you were local to me here in Bend, Oregon…I would seriously consider using you on some of these projects.

I hope you have pulled a permit for the furnace because they are probably going to check it if they see anything isn't done correctly but you can pull a homeowners permit and have the city you live in inspect the job but you should definitely read every single paragraph in the installation instructions that come with the furnace or just wait until the inspector gives you a bunch of things to fix. I have fixed so many homeowners mistakes that don't make much difference until you have a home inspection and fail it.

Got a $6500 estimate yesterday in Texas for an 80%. I said thx but no thx. Bought a Rheem today, with the filter box and additional misc for $1083. Big company markup such as this is a bit ridiculous. I'm estimating 4ish hours tomorrow for the installation. It is easy access.

@@diyhvacguy had an uneasy feeling about the old unit, as in what is wrong with it? The $6500 "tech" barely checked the unit. So, before yanking the old one I decided to get a 2nd opinion .The fellow at the parts place said the heat exchangers aren't usually the issue. He was an older man, very nice and kept repeating: why don't you just fix it? Tracy Graham of Cool Country Air came out and within 30 minutes had it running. The inducer pressure hose nipple was blocked. Highly recommend him in the DFW area. So now all I have to do is load up my new unit and parts for a refund. This went from $6500, down to me doing it for $1083, down to $120. Tracy also had a camera that he used to look at the exchangers. I saw the images , looked great. What I've learned is that gas furnaces are not that complex, quite simple to diagnose and repair, if you know what you're doing. The start up is a sequence of events, 5 -6, one after the other.

It's nice to see someone tell it like it is, I had to give you a sub, watching these kinda vid's because I rent the basement apartment of this house and my landlord lives upstairs, he just had a (HE) 96% Goodman and air conditioner installed, in the furnace room I have a little table and my tools it's not very big, but after the furnace guy left I started getting all kinds of ants and bugs, found out he didn't seal the holes where the cords and hose for the air unit was outside and the exhaust hole so I had to seal them up, then I had to use 3/4 of a roll of aluminum tape to cover the gaps in the duck work, some holes 1/2 inch long, we also had to get the 61 year old furnace out by ourselves, plus I had to clean up after he left, so anyway i'm looking at the furnace and I thought isn't there supposed to be a fresh air intake going to the outside, so I told the landlord to ask his furnace guy about it and he said nope don't need one, im in Ontario, Canada and i'm thinking in the winter won't the furnace use up all the oxygen in that small room and cause problems for us? There is no window or vent or no way for that furnace to get fresh air, by the way 2 years ago the pilot light on the old furnace would not stay lit so he put in a thermocouple, used my tools and charged the landlord 100$ for 5 minutes work and the landlord thinks this guy is the best :(

Thank you for another great video! We replaced a furnace and AC system for my niece a year ago. The previous install was a nightmare. One screw held the return duct to the furnace and a 3" gap, in the rear, was wrapped with aluminum tape. The supply duct above the plenum was pulled apart at the Pittsburgh and a 1" gap was blowing supply air into the furnace room. We corrected these problems and many others and she now has a great, high efficiency, furnace and an AC that doesn't leak. (The 2 year old Goodman was leaking at the evaporative coil). I don't know how the installers could sleep at night after doing such shoddy work.

I bought a little house down the street I'm redoing that I priced a new furnace for it and they wanted over 8 thousand dollars. 🙄 Not going to happen. lol My furnace is 8 years old so I'm plan on buying myself a new one and putting mine in that house. Every sense I had problems with my furnace and had that company come out to fix it, it kept shutting off at night. I'd take the cover off then it would work. It would quit working again the next night. Called them they worked on it charged me almost $200. That night did the same thing. They came back replace the Hot Surface Control, almost $400. Will the next morning NO HEAT. I was mad. Thinking why would it not work but you take the cover off it would work. Sound to me like something sticking. Dug out the book to it and looking at all the components and saw the Air Pressure Switches. Ordered them on Amazon. I replaced them and guess what, fixed it. That was a few years back sense then I've fixed the AC that needed a compositor and few other things. With a little research and videos like yours I've found furnaces are really easy. Hard to find far and honest people anymore. Wish you live in my town, you'd have my business...

Not happy with some of the outrageous prices I've seen from heating system installers. What I've also found is that they will not divulge the cost of the boiler. I'm not paying $4400 for something that I can have on my doorstep next week for $2400. A relative just paid $7500 to hook up a boiler that his daughter gave him recently. It was new but she had replaced it with a high efficiency unit. And this was the exception ,,, finding someone to install a boiler that they did not sell you. I get that they want to take on full responsibility for the job but I also think It's more about money. My daughter paid $18,000 for one of the hang on the wall units for 2000 sq ft. home. It included adding one baseboard section to an adjoining room. It happened to be a straightforward job. That's crazy money. And don't get me started on trained, licensed professionals. I've seen some of most horrific work done by "pros". I'm not a plumbing, heating or gas pro but do very fine work on anything I tackle. But I also understand that there are many out there who would blow themselves up along with a city block due to lack of knowledge.

I installed my own 95% furnace in my home. I bought it on Ebay for about $2000 ( free shipping) with maybe a couple of hundred added for some tools and materials. My old furnace was an 80% so I kept the outer roof jack and ran my PVC pipes inside of it with insulation and a custom made cap made from a stainless steel cake pan. I learned a lot while doing it and I feel confident that I can repair anything in the system now, by myself. Houses similar to mine have had their furnace replaced for 400% MORE THAN MINE COST ME. So I decided I was going to replace mine by myself well before my old 35 year old furnace completely failed. I will never call in an HVAC company as long as I live.

21 years ago, it cost me $2500 for a replacement. It was a 93%, 100k btu, Anderson. Also, I went from an 80% furnace. I plan on replacing with another 90 something furnace myself next year, with a little help from someone who used to do this for a living. It appears I need to replace my single 2 inch PCV pipe with two 3 inch pipes.

Kind of depends on where the furnace is. If there is enough area where the furnace is to pull fresh air for combustion, you may not need the 2nd pipe but if it’s in a confined space then yes you’d need to run the second pipe. I see a lot of 96% furnaces in a big open space in the basement that just have an open 90 degree elbow off the fresh air side. The install manual will show the requirements for 2” and 3” depending on the size of the furnace. It can only have so many 90’s and 45’s if it’s 2” and same with 3” If you’d like some info on the warranty for the new system, shoot me an email over at [e-mail] Cheers

Educate yourself, purchase and install your new furnace, and then call a service company for a couple hundred bucks to come out and do a "clean and tune". If anything is wrong, they will find it. Piece of mind at a great price!!

Today a furnace replacement done professionally is $5,000 to $12,000 on the West Coast. This includes everything like a surge protector, new thermostat, filter box, venting, etc. I would always stick with Trane, American Standard, Carrier, Bryant, or Lennox. Never buy a Coleman, York, or Maytag! Goodman is hit or miss for lasting.

@@andreilesiuk9538 I don't know much about Armstrong. I'd find a good HVAC contractor that has been around for years and has good Google reviews. Make sure the person is testing airflow, a static pressure test. If they don't test static pressure and didn't see how many vents you have I wouldn't go with them. If you only have 1 return air duct it's a huge red flag, and you need someone to test statistic pressure!

@@dand3975 That make no sense, unless they are a really small HVAC company that can no longer get Carrier equipment. I will only ever recommend Carrier, Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Lennox, Mitsubishi, and Daikin. Why choose anything else that's lower quality! Coleman and York are the worst. Look up their Consumer Reports ratings. It's 2 out of 10 for reliability! So 8 out of 10 people have problems in the first 10 years of ownership.

5 years ago I was house shopping. Found a newer house that had heat pumps and elec furnace. I called big guys in tulsa. They wanted something like $9k a piece ($18k total) just for furnace swap to natural gas. Outside unit would remain. Ended up buying a century home with nothing installed. Called a small hvac guy locally had 2 goodmans installed 96% furnace, 18 seer heat pumps, ducting installed for $15k. I plumbed gas lines, condensate and flues. Plus ran electric to everything.

@@diyhvacguy I live just outside the City of Houston's regulated and incorporated area, in a place called "HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS." In Harris County, no government supported building permits/fees (or "on site" inspections) are utilized for residential dwellings. There are "State of Texas Building Codes" that are published and expected to be followed by home builders/contractors. But there is NO SUCH A THING AS A "GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED BUILDING INSPECTION DEPARTMENT" that covers metropolitan Harris County and ENFORCES these published Texas State Building Codes. Government supported and Certified "building inspectors" who visit job sites and enforce building codes are found ONLY WITHIN THE CITY OF HOUSTON BOUNDARIES. Does that sound ridiculous to you? It sure does to me.

@@galsina you can order one on Amazon or eBay no problem. It will have a 5 year warranty right out of the box, even thought I’m sure you wouldn’t have any issues until we’ll after that. I have a large 29 yo manufactured home with the original high efficiency furnace that has crapped out. Based on my research, I'm thinking that going standard efficiency over high efficiency is better as they break down less, are easier to work on and parts are cheaper. Is this the case? Am I thinking wrong or am I on the right track? FYI I am in a very cold type 5 blue zone. Lastly, I was told that if I did the install myself (as I am not a certified tech) it would void the warranty...

Jesus, you said $2000 for 80% and even $3000 for upgrade to 96%!?! We just paid $13,170 for my mother’s home. She lives in a 3bed 2bath double wide mobile home. All the ductwork was in place already but the price didn’t even include checking or replacing if needed 😢 I feel like we got screwed over massively, but her furnace also has the AC unit with condenser outside as well. Went from 2.5 ton to 3 ton. As you mainly cover the heating side of costs, how much more should I have expected to pay for the AC too? Thanks.

Here in Canada, a high efficient gas furnace (the only one you will be allowed to install) is always AT LEAST $5,000. This would be a replacement for an EXISITING high efficient furnace (house built in 2012 in my case) where all of that retro-fitting is not needed. I know a few people with plumbers in the family/friends that buy them a furnace at their cost and suddenly the price is around $800. Of course unless you know someone, you will be unable to buy a furnace yourself. The plumbing industry are gouging SCUM. All-electric for me in my next build.

I have an HVAC company and I have to pay for insurance, workman’s comp , social security, federal and state taxes, Medicare and general liability for each employee as well as administrative overhead, office expenses, warehouse/office rent, utilities, vehicle insurance, fuel, upkeep etc. these factors take us from a handyman status to a full HVAC contractor. Our hourly wage is $90 hr. For 1 technician and $125 for 2 technicians. We only mark up our materials 25% which is below national average. Hey Chad. I have a helper for installs but for the most part I work by myself. I have a little Tacoma as you’ve seen, so I don’t have to drive my big duramax everywhere. I have very little overhead, vehicle insurance, fuel, tools, maintenance. When I was doing handyman work, I was up to 100/hr but I don’t do by the hour anymore since I’m full time hvac now. It’s all by the project which averages 300/hr ish. I don’t have a select percentage for markup. I usually just figure materials cost and then add $2k/day But sometimes it averages closer to 3k/day

What about the cost of a new gas Cock, gas flex upgrade electrical to a disconnect switch and ductwork conversion if needed. I like your videos and the simplicity of the teachings. Is it better to bring the box on the bottom up with blocks or wood, or would it be better to do sheet metal work at the top box that leads to the duct work?

I'm curious as to what it might cost to replace an oil burning furnace for a high efficiency propane or natural gas furnace since heating oil is over $4 a gallon right now and the furnace needs to be replaced anyway. I have just started looking into this yesterday so I am still brand new to all of this

As long as your ductwork is sufficient and you have good airflow at your vents with the existing system you should be good. The only thing you’ll need to change is installing a gas line. Do you already have natural gas or propane there for other appliances?

@@diyhvacguy it's an old house there is a DIY propane line going into the living room for a supplemental Mr Buddy heater type thing but no other gas. We would either need to get a big propane tank or have a natural gas line installed.

80% efficient furnace vs 90/92/96+… didn’t see anything about payback! For a small, well insulated home, the payback for the up charge for a high efficiency furnace might be *after* the expected service life of your new furnace! Also factor in potentially higher maintenance/repair costs due to the higher complexity. This question - “does it make economic sense for me to have a high efficiency furnace installed?” Is a great way to test the expertise of a contractor.

Hi, this video is really helpful. I've got five quotas, all of them is over $7,000. I decide to replace my 80% efficiency one to a high efficiency after watch your videos. What is required for the replacement as homeowner, is permit required? and how about furnace code?

Glad it was helpful for you! If you are replacing it yourself, technically you should get a permit, and the inspector will just verify that everything was done up to code. But a lot of people don’t, and accept the risk as it is their own home. When I replaced mine and added ac I didn’t pull one. Really the only two things are adding the pvc venting, and adding the drain for the high efficiency furnace. If you already have a drain for your ac then that won’t be a problem. When you get your furnace, just make sure you follow the venting size chart and you will be good. It will be 2-3” diameter venting.

Bro Ik this a year old but…it’s your own fault ur charging so little. I understand a furnace is now…I say NOW! (Nov 23’) around 1500-2000 but you have other material. You charge nothing basically for labor and your knowledge is work a lot. I think a lot of people would be happy with your pricing but you deserve more for what you are doing in their home. Kinda Dumb Question but here it goes...... $4500-$9500 does that include the price of the furnace? or is that just labor? I have a 92% furnace that needs replacing (26yrs old) PVC and drainage system is fine it is on first level straight shot with a ramp 3 ft from a wide door, any stabs at $$$$$ ???

That’s equipment and labor but that’s a huge gap between 4500 and 9500. Since it’s a 96% high efficiency furnace the equipment is significantly higher price wise, so if it’s a relatively easy location, I’d say somewhere around 5-6000. Anything less would be a good deal. For me it would probably close to 4500, but I understand that other companies have a lot more overhead.

@@diyhvacguy Yep. I also made the mistake of putting my info in this site where dozens of hvac companies call you to give estimates. So I just had them all come over. ALL of them were ripping me off. So Definetly dont do that. But since I made the OC i talked to a friend about some electrical work and I found out that he is also hvac certified. So he is upgrading me to 200 amp service and said he would hook up the propane lines and electrical and all that if i bought and mounted the unit and the flue. You saved me alot of money. I dont know how much he would charge to do only the furnace start to finish but it wasnt no 19,000.

Complete BS. Over twenty-years in the HVAC business and can confirm that smaller companies cannot give you emergency service like bigger companies because they don't have the resources! Also, smaller companies are much more likely to go out of business! Especially, if they quote too cheap. I have seen this time and time again! Pay more for better service and warranty! 2 to 4K furnace??? Your getting a Chuck in a Truck install. Good luck!!!
