Practice, always practice 😊 I remind myself constantly that there is no shame in failure and that it is in fact a great teacher. I see no other way, since success happens more rarely and usually not as visible as does failure.

Good video. I have been trying to mentally reframe ‘training’ as ‘practice’ for a while, and sometimes in fact I use a third word instead. ‘Play’.

I’m a new subscriber. I call what I do training, but it’s really more of a practice. I try to get better and fail often, but it really doesn’t matter. I just keep going, and my competition is with myself.

Great video and insight, Antonio. That's the way to look at things that makes the most sense for me too. I think we're here in this planet to learn/ explore, even though we don't understand the "why" and the "what" fully. Every moment is an oportunity to investigate life and its manifestations and ourselves and others - that is what "practice" has been meaning to me lately, and there is no reason to separate the physical practice from the rest, as you said. To see myself as a "practitioner" helps to evoke a different kind of awareness in whatever I'm doing. And that came from the movement culture. Nice to see you spreading this message, and also inspiring. Thanks for sharing 🙃

To me training needs a purpose, whereas practice is it’s own purpose. You don’t have to enjoy training but practice without enjoyment is weird…to say the least. For instance my two main hobbies are martial arts and drawing. Both have a training and a practice aspect. I train for my fights, because I want the experience to be able to teach fighting at some point, some part of the training really suck, but I do it anyway. I also enjoy just practicing and perfecting my skills and nothing really requires I do it everyday. Without the goal I have I could just stay away from competition, practice and simply do the parts I enjoy. For drawing, it’s my job, I’m an animator, I love it and at the same time it requires that I maintain a good level at drawing, or better, that I improve. So it’s both practice and training. But if some day I didn’t enjoy it anymore….I don’t know what I would do 😅
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay Жыл бұрын
I see your point here but I would be cautious about chasing the enjoyment. Eventually, the fun practices will lose their enjoyment in some capacity or another. Does this mean we stop practicing or see practice in a new light. A hobby brings enjoyment, a practice can bring enjoyment but it also brings frustration, challenge, stress, etc. This is all good in the right dosages. Your last sentence says it all, this is where most people fall off. They eventually stop enjoying what they once loved and stopped practicing all together. We need to practice to practice the things we don't enjoy as well as the things we enjoy.

Hi Lucas, thank you for your continued support here! For your suggestion, do you mean, how to balance consuming the information and practicing it vs. consuming it just to consume it?
@lucasdummer
@lucasdummer Жыл бұрын
there are two points 1. Information in general, any other topic of life (Philosophy, Psychology, Politics, Entertainment) and how algorithms are made to keep people inside them going towards nothing. 2. Too much information within the Movement Culture itself, I find myself thinking: "Stop following everyone, just follow the top 2-5 references you have including Ido and that's it" Even Ido says that "Information is toxic" and I believe that when he says that he means in general, all kinds of information. Maybe would be nice if you share you relation with your content consum... Big hug and thank you@@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay Жыл бұрын
Those are great topics but I think you have answered them yourself to a certain degree by posing the questions. Information can be toxic and we are in the age of having everything all the time. Want the answer? Just ask ChatGPT!...not that simple. I can see what I can do here but as a simple tool, if you are consuming information to learn from it, stop once you have the information and put it in to practice immediately. Take your time to apply and learn for it before you chase the next new topic. Don't fall into the trap of chasing novelty. As an example, if you want to learn locomotion, visit ONE of Ido's old videos and accumulate 500 reps of that single pattern over the month or two. Break this up as much as you need (5 sets of 10, 3 times per week would get you there in just 3 - 4 weeks). You will be surprised at how much you learn from just sticking to the 'boring' movement.

Some great points - for example most of us could 'practice' a physical exercise for 6 hrs a day if it were matched to our capability - 6 hrs walking would be hard for many of us initially. I especially like your use of 'practice' vs 'train' as it sets a new intention for doing - a 'now' and 'not yet' intention vs a 'future outcome' intention - I will do that or reach that level [in the future] vs I'm practising this exercise today to get a little better

Great video! You're touching on a lot of ideas that I've been thinking about in my own practice. I've got a question that I would love your input on. I had been dealing with neck tension which lead to pain recently. I thought I was doind too much training. Then I came across the concept of arm emptying from The Passive Hang. This practice has allowed me to alleviate the tension in my neck and allowed me to practice my other disciplines with more confidence and intensity. What do you love to incorporate in your practice on the soft/passive/relaxed/rejuvenating side of things? I've heard of arm emptying andI know that Bren Verizoglu is a big proponent of meditation and somatics. I'm just really not sure what somatics really is or how to practice it. If you could point me in some direction for that too I would appreciate it. Thanks for all you share! Take care brother

I have to admit I can't calculate my intensity capacity that well, I tend to go overboard. I mainly did bodybuilding till 2 months ago, training beyond failure and being too tired to do other sports, walking for many hours though. Now I work at my gym and spend most time putting back the heavy weights, which is physically exhausting and requires me to eat so much and I don't get breaks to do so. Even though I reduced my lifting, I started calisthenics practice and still walk 3 hours minimum, and I feel I'm losing muscle and don't recover enough. It's hard to gage how I should structure my exercise to practice skills, keep my muscle, and enjoy the movement without overdoing it

it's ok to zone out and let your mind wander. it's a form of rest and sleep for the brain which is important for learning. we need activity cycles and rest cycles. and yes i found the idea of "practice" to be synonymous with "pattern", "lifestyle", "way of life", "habits" etc. it occurred to me that, the practice of being a Buddhist monk is different from a Shaolin monk. One sits all day, the other moves all day. Or even the idea of archetypes and career paths. A dancer spends most of his time dancing, a computer programmer spends most of his time sitting down writing code.
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay 7 ай бұрын
Allowing your mind to wander because you choose to do so at the right time is not an issue. What becomes an issue is when you zone out and wander when you should be paying attention and feeling (talking to loved ones, practicing, etc.). You zone out without choosing. It is the 'easy' and comfortable option. This is what we should be observing and working on.

A lot to look into here but here are a few points 1. Sleep - not only the duration but also the quality (do you feel refreshed upon awaking?) 2. Nutrition - are you eating due to a dogma that someone else created or something that will actually assist you with your current needs 3. Stress - physical, work, relationships, environment, etc. This plays a big role and some of these stresses are necessary to a certain degree but we want to minimize the negative stress

Please listen to my description in the video. I think I make my distinction very clear. It is okay if you disagree but know that i disagree with you if you do :) For example, if you said "I TRAIN cooking' , it would give a very different connotation than if you said 'I PRACTICE cooking'. Other examples: ' I TRAIN my relationships' vs. ' I PRACTICE my relationships', ' I TRAIN gardening' vs. 'I PRACTICE gardening'. I could go on and on.

I'm agreeing with everything except for the part with hiring someone for stuff that you don't enjoy because you would lose the practice doing it yourself. We buy products and services all the time, where we don't have an interest in, don't have the practice, just for fun, or for time efficiency. You have not build your bicycle, you have not made your clothes, not build your house. Because you haven't practiced it. And that's totally fine, because your interest/mission lies elsewhere. Now for the video editing part, you have to ask yourself. Do you create more value for others and is it more in line with your vision, putting out more quality content or using the time for video editing? The question is probably how much do you value a certain practice? If you value the practice of video editing, you keep doing it. But if you value something else more, than it's totally fine to let experienced practitioners do the job for you.
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay Жыл бұрын
Ah, are you one of those emails I receive about editing my videos?! Only kidding. I agree with your first point. I certainly don't do everything myself and I value the work of others in a lot of aspects. I was talking about the specific points I brought up in this video. Cooking, gardening, cleaning, etc. I could hire a chef, a maid, a gardener but this would take away from the wonderful practice. The deeper you get into a practice the more you see that it doesn't matter what you practice. It can be the simple act of hanging up laundry or doing the dishes. It is not always about 'life hacking' everything. This is where I think we tend to fall off the wagon as a society. A quote I use often, "Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.".
