A lot of people need a big wake up call thinking they can just go out on their own and run a business. If this is a question you have to ask, you don't have the experience or confidence to do it on your own. And that's all okay. Slow down, hone your skills and become an assassin. THEN go out and crush the game. Chris with the fire as always.

I am loving the "Yeah. But..." endings! I love seeing the video in a perfect loop. I was confused at first and I'm seeing some people in the comments express their confusion as well. Maybe it would be better to record "Yeah. But (question)" at the very beginning of the clip and have Chris ask if the advice makes sense at the very end. The video would still loop seemlessly but it wouldn't cut out at the very end and leave some people confused whether or not there is more to the video that they missed out on.

When you're getting started, working IS the compensation. Work, learn, grow, repeat. Then, get paid for it, repeat. If there's anyone new here looking for an actual price - I promise you if you get fixated on how much to charge, that process and mindset will consume you. Just take in the project, get the experience, worry about your growth first.

Why do people think they are skilled at something because they went to school for it. Going to school means you just completed your junior cubs apprenticeship, it paid so little that you paid them ALOT. Why don't people see school as the first step in 100 to becoming successful. I do more work at 33 years old in one week than I used to do in a semester of school. That was actually one of my biggest difficulties. What used to take a 6 month semester to complete. I can now complete in 6 days. I used to ask for 6 months to work on one project. Now I ask for 6 days.
@SSTricky
@SSTricky 3 жыл бұрын
I think the problem is we're told school is the end all be all, especially by our parents and teachers. Everyone drills it into you about the importance of school. They even imply, sometimes outright say, you'll be making the big bucks "once you finish school". There needs to be more discussions on the importance of experience especially during high school. That's just my 2 cents.

OKAY, BUT what if I'm a self-taught graphic designer, and obviously NOT the best out there? This is from a super-talented perspective, which makes the argument so easy to handle...
@UTJK.
@UTJK. 3 жыл бұрын
If you are uncomfortable making a price, I think that the best way to choose a rate when you start, is to track yourself doing a portfolio project. See how many hours it takes for you to complete it (don't forget to add research and analysis time). Then decide which is your ideal hour rate, which is the minimum comfortable hour rate for you to work, multiply the latter number (or an average between the two) for the hours needed to make it and you have a price. Tell the customer it is discounted because you just start and want to reward him/her for being the first. Always specify the real value of the project they are buying. Remember to ask 25% or 50% in advance. Repeat with a couple of clients. You'll discover immediately that you'll want to raise your prices, as you will see the clients will bother you with problems to solve or unnecessary changes that will make you lose a lot of time. Moreover if something is paid more, is perceived more worthy. After this little experience with hourly rates, you should be enough confident you could sell a service, so you could start modeling your prices based on the value you provide.

@@UTJK. This is not only advice but more like a roadmap you just provided, thank you very much! I'll legit apply this and see what happens! He's asking the most valuable question that 'How can I come with my rate?'. And this hat man couldn't tell him. Why? Do you really have to evaluate your college degree or the costumes you wear but simply calculating your current living expenditure and convert from monthly expenditures into daily and hourly you will come up with your rate. Add 25% mark up on the top. Simple.
@nubscrub
@nubscrub 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but this "hat man" provided better advice than what you wrote by far. Whether doing market research, or using a formula to come up with a number, that's simple. What he's guiding him above research is on building 1) portfolio (confidence of customer 2) himself (confidence to command said amount). Most people asking the same question aren't getting customers even after doing cost calculations. By the way +25% is a joke, this is why many don't grow their business to its potential.
