Depends how you define legal, the emulators are perfectly legal and say you buy a Nintendo Switch game but play it on the Steam Deck, I don't really see any legal issues and in a sense, Nintendo still gets it's 30% cut of the game sale apart from you don't need the Switch to play it. What should scare Nintendo is that games could run better on the Steam Deck in emulation then it does on the Switch it's self and considering the price point of the Steam Deck, that should be scary for Nintendo.

@@liothesilverwing3016 I remember that at the time, I actually bought Bleem in the late 90's I think it was, anyway, I remember both Sony and Nintendo was being hard on emulation and was more or less trying to stop it outright, in the end, they lost because reverse engineering something isn't legal just as long as there isn't any code that's been copied and pasted in from the source. The irony is in all this, if the likes of Nintendo and Sony actually made it easier for people to play their games through emulators, they likely would make more money because most of the money they make is by that 30% cut and if their games were available to more gamers, a lot more gamers would likely buy them. In any case, there is nothing Nintendo can do to stop me or others from buying their games and playing them on other platforms.

Edit: all I know is every time there is a question of emulation they only really ask if you own a copy of the game not if your key is a match for your emulation... probably because this kind of stuff goes over courts head.

@@s4shrish your price comparison is very disingenuous. The base steam deck is only $100 more than the regular switch and Valve is pulling out all the stops to make sure it’s successful. Let me just list a couple of features that the Deck has that the switch does not: •easy upgradability and repair by partnering with iFixit •a *massive* library of games via Steam Proton •backward/forward compatibility because it’s steam •support for every input method imaginable •*FREE MULTIPLAYER FUNCTIONALITY* •the ability to dual-boot windows and just use it as a PC And I could go on. You are getting *SO* much more with that extra $100 that it’s kinda insane. Last time I checked, the switch doesn’t even have functional joysticks and you had to pay $60 for a mediocre port of a retro game. Nintendo got comfortable and Valve is now running circles around them, so I think clowning on Nintendo is kinda justified

The Switch has been incredibly successful, it brought in casuals and enthusiasts alike from other platforms, and probably people who haven't bothered with gaming in a long time. The console is currently at 85MILLION units sold... and yet the highest selling 1st party game on the Switch is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 35million... and that game happens to have high appeal outside the fanbase. Zelda, Smash, and Pokemon have only hit the low 20 millions. Meaning that a LARGE chunk of those whose purchased the Switch are potential customers who might see value in the Steam Dock down the road (depends on how well it's received by current purchasers, and how much they spread word of the console if it turns out amazing.) All the perks of PC gaming (mind blowing sales, an immortal library of games that will never die or need to be repurchased, etc.) without the complications of building or choosing a pre-built PC to purchase, while giving all that in portable form. It's an easily marketable device, they just need to actually advertise it properly. So yes, it IS offering Nintendo competition in the field of portable gaming, just not to hard-core Nintendo fans who play for 1st party games specifically.

@@JuniperGreen162 u have alot of good points here. i think the steam deck is foremost for core-gamers who allready own a pc and therefore have a steam library which they want to have on the go. even then most pc players would prefer playing on their buffed home rig. i think there will only be a few ppl who dont own a pc and will buy a (not so cheap) steam deck to start pc gaming as a handheld (preferbly ppl who only play on consoles). i see it this way: ppl interested in portable gaming have a switch allready. ppl interested in pc gaming have a pc allready. only a very few enthusiasts who own a pc and/or a switch will buy this as another gaming device. and ppl who dont own any gaming related yet will probably grab something they allready heard of and is big in marketing campaigns (ps,xbox or switch). and ya i see how awesome the steam deck is but then i have to think about all the other pc handhelds that are allready out there and nobody rly bothers them... pc handheld is a niche market till now... i hope pc handheld gaming will get bigger with the steam deck but i think it wont

I'd say you are right about PC gamers not getting it, I don't plan on buying one, as I have a very high-end PC as it is. However those who only purchase consoles, or those who only have weak computers for things like work/school, I can see it become very appealing. You are viewing it as a portable-PC first, but I think in the eyes of customers, with how it's marketed, plenty of people will look at it no differently than any other gaming console. I don't think the steam deck are competitors per say. The switch is a more mainstream device for a cheaper price and high quality nintendo exclusives (mainstream doesn't emulate). The steam deck can't be even bought from retail stores and requires a steam account with a purchase, which assume your atleast partially a pc gamer like regular grandmas can't buy you a steam deck. On the other hand the steam deck is a more enthusiast device, while the switch is merely a console the steam deck is a literal full fat pc. You buy a switch and it's only purpose is to play games it's just a luxury item. You buy a steam deck and you can edit videos, work on word documents and excel spreadsheets, use it as a tablet to view any video. The steam deck provides much more value and isn't just a luxury item. It also sounds amazing for emulation and you can just run windows of it. They both occupy wildly different spaces and aren't direct competitors as say the Vita and the DS

H2D Fives Eh Switch also has real third party ports tailored to the handheld experience and not just Steam games on a handheld tailored to Monitors. It has better battery (V2 models), is smaller, is not as thick, better screen (Oled model) etc. Depends on your needs to be honest. I would rather play Hades on my Switch than on my thick Steam Deck for example.
