Sometimes we all need a good vacation. Though we got a pretty nice one in Wii Sports Resort, I explain in this video why, 10 years later, the Wii game's acclaimed setting is more than deserving of an advanced comeback on the Switch.

I wish I knew how many hours I put into Go Vacation with my sister as a kid. That game with next level. I can’t even count all the times I went down the snow resort mountain. My sister and I would have a swimming race from the top of the mountain resort to the lake at the bottom. We would snow tube race to the bottom of the snow resort. We would see who could make it all the way across the rail grind course at the back of the city resort. That game’s mini games weren’t on the level of Wii Sports Resort but there were loads, they were still really fun, and the exploration was so free you were able to make up your own mini games. And making a villa...so much fun. Best game to play with a sibling.

Imagine a game where you can just relax and hang out with the Mii's from your Switch in Wuhu Island, like having interactions with them and so on. And of course all the games from Wii Sports, Wii Fit and Pilotwings franchise in one beefy Wuhu Island game! With some new stuff such as swimming, free diving and so on. I would like to explore Wuhu Island with my Mii and one (or more) Mii's of my choice. Visiting a restaurant for a feast, visiting a hotel for a sleep together and more! I really don't know why Nintendo doesn't do a new game with that island. We got Go Vacation, which is a great game but not so polished well and you can't do much with other characters rather than making poses and there are very few games where your follower can play with you, like SCUBA diving.

Holy shit, I've had this exact idea so many times before, I'm shocked other people agree. There's something so appealing to me about Wuhu Island, and I don't think it's just nostalgia. The open fields, scattered towns, details and secrets, it all felt too good for a Wii Sports game. Even the layout just seems exceptionally well designed, I feel like even a lot of casual gamers who don't really pay attention could recognise the island's silhouette from fifty paces. Bar the active volcano, it really did feel like the ideal vacation spot, and venturing out of town, driving along the coast under the rocky archway at sunset was lowkey my greatest escape fantasy for a while lol. Okay, so maybe it is nostalgia talking, but tell me, how many college-aged students who played Wii Sports as a kid and own a Switch now wouldn't kill for this opportunity? None of them. Because of that, it wouldn't be an off the wall business decision. It would give relevance to Miis as well, which now just feel awkwardly tacked on and hidden away in the Switch's UI. Imagine this game with a 24-hour clock, Animal Crossing style, occasional events, etc. The clean and simple style of Wii era games means it wouldn't be graphically intensive, yet an HD facelift and some simple lighting additions, a couple particle effects, etc would blow the minds of everyone who played on the original island. I know this is mostly a pipe-dream, and I'm not usually the type to beg for impractical ideas from gaming companies which I would be a niche market for, but this would just be so perfect and on-brand from Nintendo. It would be nostalgic for those who played Wii Sports, and more than that, nostalgia-fuel for the new generation. I don't think I'll ever get this idea out of my head.

Wow, I love all of your insights. Yeah, your first point is definitely how I got started on this video idea; I was playing Pilotwings and was like, "huh, there's so much more potential here for worldbuilding immersion. Don't know why it's relegated to an arcade flight simulator." And your second point is absolutely true. SO much audience appeal here. Nintendo could make so much money off of anyone between the ages of 15-30 who grew up on this game, and plenty more as well. This game is definitely less of a pipe dream than you might think!

​@@TamValleyProductions I'm glad you agree. I sure hope you're right, that it isn't just a pipe dream, but I'm hesitant to completely embrace my desire to revive Wuhu. It feels reminiscent of my dumbass childhood gaming fantasies; dark and edgy entries in the Mario series, games where you type out what your character says and NPCs can respond to ANYTHING, that sort of thing. Obviously, this concept has a more logical justification for its existence, but I can't escape the feeling that I'm being driven by the remnants of the naive ten-year-old who never left my brain, it seems too good to be a realistic prospect and live up to the expectations. I guess regardless of whether or not something like this is ever made, at least I can rest peacefully knowing I'm not the only believer :)

You just listed all the reasons why this would be lucrative for Nintendo. If this releases I could see this topping their charts. Just think about it. It screams Nintendo: fun for the older generations that grew up on sports games such as triathlon, fun for teens who grew up on the original wii sports resort, and fun for kids who can grow up on this game. With a deeper dive into this game and a detailed open world experience, this could be amazing. I’m talking a game where you can go around the island, talk to NPCs in different places to begin events or sports, have a house, earn money from these sports to decorate/dress up! Pretty sure this is anyone’s dream aged 5-30: Nintendo’s target audience. All packaged on the end all be all of timeless fun for all ages, the Switch. This is a grievous mistake of Nintendo’s if some form of Switch Sports Resort doesn’t come to fruition. I just think this would sell like hot cakes, be received extremely well, and go down as a classic for generations to come if done right.

Like a secret Mii resistance fighting to ensure that the Dark Lord doesn't take over the Island, or maybe the Dark Lord would be the reason the Volcano is ready to explode. So, you are a mii sailor and you come across wuhu island, many people are traveling away from it on the queen peach, you find out that maka wuhu exploded and the entire island is destroyed except for the hotel and parts of the plaza, (of course the candle would still be around alongside the beach). But, you find yourself on the island with one other resident(there would also be a two player mode where you do this with two people) the other resident owns the hotel and offers you to help clean up and do work for him to pay you. You do jobs (in the form of mini games and cutscenes) and get payed. You can use the money to help restore wuhu island and over time you’ll unlock mini games that were in the original wii sports resort in which you can get payed even more money, (playing basketball, collecting information by flying over the island etc...) once you restore about half of the island the queen peach will arrive and more miis come,In the beginning of the game, the more of the island you restore, the more miis will come and each of them has a unique side quest to them, (one wants to find love, one wants to become a professional basketball player, etc...) this is a way to continue to progress in the story, (also places like inside the houses and the hotel you’d be able to see) it would be a live the life game like animal crossing or tomodachi life. Once you finish the game and restore wuhu island you would get to be the mayor and that makes the game interesting for a while, then lets say you play basketball or ping pong, you would enter a tournament and get to play in the world finals,(if you are good enough) then to end the game, once you have completed all the side quests and all the mini games and everything, you can leave the island in the queen peach for another adventure, (also, the queen peach would be super intense and climactic as a cutscene or a gameplay portion.) if not, you could stay

I saw a similar idea on another video, and I agree, something like this would be amazing. There could even be shops around the town to buy cosmetics and furniture. One feature I think would be implemented if they made this on the Switch, is just like Animal Crossing, everyone on your console shares the same island, so you can visit the houses of your family. Maybe you would start out in an apartment, then upgrade to different or nicer locations. As you said, the location of minigames would have relevance, and I can imagine if you start a bike race from one end of the island going to the next, then where the race ends is where your character is after the event. This means you could use games as a source for traveling across the island. Just like with the normal Wii Sports Resort game, you would have to do some of the sports in easy difficulty before unlocking a harder difficulty - which would even be in another part of the island. Honestly though, it shouldn't just be limited to Sports Resort. We should also get the games from the original Wii Sports (There's a nice open field that could easily be home to a baseball field, and one of the buildings could be repurposed for boxing), and even some of the games from Wii Fit too! Another cool things that I would love to see implemented, is weather, time, and seasons! Imagine different events happening at different times of the day, or even in different seasons. Perhaps tournaments would be scheduled on different days at different times. I think unlike Animal Crossing, time wouldn't be relevant to real life, and would be a lot quicker, allowing you to attend events or play the sport you want to without having to wait all day (Or setting your device's time)

I was thinking that a good idea could be bringing back Wuhu Island in a Tomodachi Life 2 game for the Switch, instead of creating your own island, have all your Miis live in an apartment complex within Wuhu Town, and instead of building new stores or places when you advance in the “story” by upgrading your Mii’s levels have different locales of Wuhu Island unlock for your Mii to visit. and well having the random events in Tomodachi Life could evolve into having your Miis visiting certain places like the mysterious ruins or the beach and well having the option of controlling the Mii with a 3rd person camera, collecting stuff to decorate the apartment

The 2003 snowboarding game SSX 3 actually has an open world elements where you can drop your character at any point on the mountain outside of a race and just coast down the mountain along your preferred route at your own speed. Between the slopes, you're able to stop in huts where you can upgrade your character with gear and cosmetics. It's a very similar (albeit simpler) concept and was very popular among the SSX 3 fans.

Yes dude! I've been thinking about it and there is so much potential for this kind of game in Wuhu! I thought basically the same as you, a more fleshed out open world / animal crossing style game with lore / quests and with all the original + pilotwings resort minigames available. Slowly allowing you to acquire houses, customization options for your character and different vehicles. What made really into this idea was going through the flyover minigame, seeing the small houses right off the town and thinking: hmm, imagine if you could live there... Also after you 100% the island flyover game you get your own house in the private island, that would be a great endgame reward for the potential new game. An entire island just for you to build on. Anyway, I'm just glad there are more people out there who share this dream. I never wanted Nintendo to do something as much as I want this.

I only owned the original wii sports, but luckily for me, i had mario kart 7 on the 3DS so i could still race around wuhu island and discover different locations. It was definitely one of my favourite tracks in the game because of the setting.

i wish this kind of approach to gameplay was applied to pokemon. like imagine if you could buy a house, get a job, or just do other daily life activities while also battling pokemon. like, it wouldnt be a primary objective, but these side functions could provide nore post - game content and serve to accomodate the basic features of battling, raising, and catching pokemon in some way. it makes each subsequent region feel like a living, breathing place. you could even incorporate pokemon - esque aspects into it. it would help make the world feel less linear in its goal orientation. i have other ideas i could flesh out, and i could go more in depth about this concept, but thats just a brief summary of what i think should be in future pokemon games

My Idea for the game: You pick a starter house in the island. You can buy better houses with money. You can get money by exploring the island and playing some of the games. You could also buy custom clothes for your character or vehicles to travel through the island.They can add a multiplayer system where you could roam through the island with friends and play some of the games with them.

I remember returning home from the local mall with my mother, holding a copy of Wii Sports Resort. Once I started the game I looked at my TV in awe, jumping like crazy (I know, I was a weird kid). I started with Swordplay, soon trying all the other activities. So many memories

Honestly I’ve always wanted to do this also. It would be such a good idea to explore the island freely like a GTA thing almost. Unfortunately, what’s sad is this will probably never happen because Nintendo.

I’ve literally been thinking about a game like this since I was 10 in about 2010/2011. I love wuhu island so much and it makes me so happy that someone else likes the setting of wuhu island as much as I do.

I think the reason why the original wii sperts resort was a collection of minigames is that many people wanted to play it with their friends. Bowling or swordplay would be an example. However, if we focus on single play, your idea must be great. Plus, I would love it if there are missions with a big storyline and at the end of the mission, some kind of hidden features of the game appear, or you find a rare transportation item or so. This video makes me think of my childhood a lot. Thanks for the great video^^

This game was my entire childhood! I didn’t realize how much I knew about this game until I started listing facts from I points to my friends. As an adult I also was able to translate the Morse Code. The amount of detail put into Wuhu Island is insane. I just want to be able to explore the island freely. Maybe someday

Hell yeah! Everything you said, YES. Just YES! I couldn't help but get excited, imagining how such a gameplay would be. I mean, I would definitely do anything to buy a switch JUST to play such a version of Wii Sports resort. Wuhuu island has SO much unused potential and listening to people like you propose ideas, throwing them in the air in hopes it, one day becomes true. I wish I could get this video and share it to Nintendo's official account and say PLEASE DO IT! Damn I would definitely save to buy a switch just to get this masterpiece!

I think another cool edition to this idea is online multiplayer. Where you and your friends can go on wuhu island and hangout, do sports, and explore. It would be cool if they also added a optional voice chat system.

I know I’m 10 months late, but this is exactly the kind of game I always wanted to play after playing the island flyover mini game on Wii sports - I think the mix of animal crossing, open world gameplay and of course the sports would make for an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable gameplay experience.
