The whole subversion = good thing is idiotic. A man walks into a restaurant and orders a steak. The chef comes out to the table, puts a plate on the table, climbs up on the table, squats over the plate, and finally, drops a deuce on the plate. "Hey, I ordered a steak!" says the man. The chef's reply, "That IS a steak, the one I ate for dinner last night." Just because the chef subverted the man's expectations of a steak, that doesn't mean he should EAT SHIT! I would like to agree/disagree. Subverting expectations has potential, but is useless without proper usage. Ryan Johnson's recent movie "Knives Out", shows how much he learned about the subversion of expectations in the Last Jedi, and utilizes one of, if not THE best expectation subversions in cinematic history. Subverting expectations is like salt. Salt ain't a meal, but Salt in a meal just makes it taste so good. Unless you use it in meals like icecream or cake.

I personally felt the ending could've been easily edited to fit a certain point I've noticed a good couple of people have agreed where instead of "destroying" magic, Star & Marco should've recreated it to where be more balanced, even-handed and accessible to all beings, leaving the Magical High Commision alive and the magic used by Mina to power her army to being shut down. Smoke and mirrors. The destruction of magic is used to bait the *characters* into thinking they can stop Mina from destroying the union between Monsters and Mewmans, killing Buff Frog, his family and possibly anyone who opposes Mina, including Mewmans and ultimately swapped with *recreating* magic to stop Mina and build a new life. They can even keep the scene where Mina refuses to change her ways (with a little touch of her getting arrested for endangering life as they know it) Which now in retrospect would've saved the show from those "genocide", "Thanos" jokes. I will say though, while I do believe the official ending was ultimately not a fitting sendoff, the show wasn't really ruined for me. Yeah, there's some ups and downs but I'm just one of those people who tries to be in it for the tour rather than the end of the line. That's just me tho.

I seriously don't understand how Star erasing all magic is even comparable to the Avengers reversing the snap. The latter endangers a small number of people to save half the universe. The former outright kills an unknown, yet large number of potentially unique beings to save a small number of people. If anything, it's more comparable to the actual Thanos snap... which honestly should speak volumes.
@sethmichel61384 жыл бұрын
Now there's something wrong, it confirmed that all people the snap that returned everyone made sure they were safe, so it's somehow even less comparable. All we really lost in Endgame was Black Widow and Tony Stark, anyone who was on a plane or in the air/water was safely put on the ground. 2 death not even caused by the snap compared to genocide, how do you do that Edit: Forgot about Cap but he died during something after the fight with Thanos so I'm still not counting him as one of the ones we lost because of the snap

Star committing genocide isn’t the only problem I had with the finale. When Star said she was going to destroy the magic because her tapestry said she would, I thought “Oh, I see. They THINK they have to destroy magic, but then they find another way because part of the show is about Star ignoring fate and whatnot.” But no. She actually destroyed magic. Simply because fate told her to. All of her powers that everyone kept saying were the strongest in Mewni, all of the time she took to learn how to control her magic, all of the times she was told to choose her future, ALL of it ended up being pointless.

Honestly, I feel that the villains in Star vs. got worse and worse. Ludo is the best one, because of all the character development he got. He went all the way from being "Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain" to being one of the most likable characters. Then comes Toffee, being very intimidating, and approximately 14 steps ahead of the main cast at any given point. Then comes Meteora, who, beyond being a powerhouse, was essentially a child throwing a tantrum. Though, she was the most intimidating, back when we only knew that something big was rampaging, effortlessly beating anything in its path. And the least interesting is Mina. I can't say a single good thing about Mina. I was just rolling my eyes every time they tried to play her up, desperately hoping that they'd bring in Seth or something instead. I mean, for christ's sake, she had already gotten oneshot by Meteora when she was declared a villain!

No, I’ve dropped shows and other series before when they become terrible or just stupid. Only reason I stuck with Star till the end was because I still enjoyed some of the characters and I had wanted to see them get a good end. I’m sorry if I was disappointed with a show that you love but I’m not going to stop saying or thinking that Star’s was the most garbage ending I’ve ever seen and that I could probably write a better story and ending than what was written. There are so many other people who could do this! God, it’s a real shame that Disney advertised this as the “first show created and directed by a woman” to ‘inspire’ other girls. Honestly, as a woman and writer myself, I often find myself thinking that Disney really should’ve kept the number of women creating shows on their channel down to 0 if they weren’t going to take it seriously and just use the female creator as an achievement trophy. I just want to point out the fact that in the AMA post, she wrote “So, I wrote an ending.” That’s literal proof that this ending was rushed, because she didn’t write it beforehand. If you’re making an TV show, Movie, Book, or other professional form of media, it’s a BARE MINIMUM standard that you have your storyline mapped out before you release it to the public eye. You can’t write an ending for your ongoing story with a single season left if you hadn’t had an actual conclusion in mind since before you started. It’s one thing to change the ending and tweak it, but you can’t just BS an unsatisfying ending and blame it on the network for only giving you four seasons!!
@sarzootashoota4 жыл бұрын
A lot of kids shows recently seem like they were cooked up as "wouldn't it be cool if we did this wacky concept with serious adult themes" but then they tried to do it without actually having any roadmap or ending plan. Like we will throw in these big serious things to raise the stakes (the gem bomb in Steven universe, the second main villain reveal in wander over yonder) but then fail to deal with them in a meaningful and adult way in favor of cheap easy cartoon solutions. So now you have a tonally dissonant mess that wants you to see it as a quirky silly show that you should take seriously but only when it wants you to, that presents easy cartoon solutions like love and acceptance for hard real world problems like genocide and imperialism. And then we show it to our kids. Great.

The whole thing was a complete mess like the Great Gum War between Gumbald and Bonnibel was pointless, Sheremy and Beth shouldn't take too much screentime, Gumbald defeat was so anticlimantic, Finn and Jake, the protagonist of the show got sidelinded, too many plotpoints to take in, Golb came out of nowhere, and he got defeated by a song. Thankfully the show is coming back, with Adventure Time "Distant Lands" with four episodes for each characters like first episode is BMO, second is Marcy & Bonnie, third is Peppermint Buttler, and the final is Finn & Jake and they are an hour each starting at June 25. The only thing I can say is it's better than most cartoon finales such as Steven Universe, Steven Universe: Future, Voltron, and Star vs The Forces of Evil

One more thing that completely bothered me about the finale was how star had the idea to destroy the magic and didn't even considered other options. Moon and eclipsa wanted to put their differences aside and combine their powers to fight the solarian army and I was totally hyped. But then star I immediately like "No! We have to destroy magic all together.". Such a waste of opportunities.

The only thing I like is seeing the past queens, and they could, for example, make a spell to summon them and take their magic or they could show up to help And it would have been more epic Or even summon Solaria (I think that’s the fighter queen) and be like “hey how do you destroy this armor?”
@jlwiseman983 жыл бұрын
@@dantefarge3369 they actually mentioned the reason moon couldn't remove the solarian curse was because they pledged to Solaria herself. So technically they could've just summoned her ghost and she could've easily removed it, especially since apparently she betrayed mina anyway by the end. Theres no reason why not, her ghost is clearly shown to still be able to do magic. Sounds like a pretty obvious solution, like tom can summon the dead this sounds like an easy fix. The writers really walked themselves into that one.

Thinking the finale is fine is ok, but specifically stating that you want to change peoples minds so they don’t hate it comes of as kind of manipulating, but more or so “you’re opinion is wrong” As an example I loved Future’s finale, but I know Cartoonish doesn’t. I accept that, he doesn’t have to. In fact, he made some pretty good points in his review, and I agree it could have been done better even if I hold it highly. I go along with my day, but may leave a few points that may be worth checking over and reviewing again for clearer view. That’s fine, it’s just criticism. It’s *understanding* where someone comes from with an open mind and not making a big deal out of it. Blatantly saying that someone needs to change their mind is pretty strong indications of manipulation or trying to control someone’s mind. It’s a terrible thing to do, especially when considering some other extremes that don’t involve cartoons and tv shows that could lead people to actually get hurt, not just emotionally.

There was a spell in the secondarily canon Magic Book of Spells which could bring back anyone to life. star ended horrendously, in fact the whole season was an absolute mess. it wasted too much time worrying about starco, gave ludo the shaft and de-railed both star's and moon's characters. it would be more reasonable if after cornonation mina was revealed to have been breaking in the monster temple, stealing the wand to make the solarian warriors. it would've gave resolution to the plot point of dark magic being used in the temple and would've made for a more believable twist .

Considering that the people on Earth didn't know about the monsters, Mewmans, etc. can you imagine how they would react to one of the monsters coming up to them or something? They would either try to defend themselves (probably killing/harming the monster) because they thought that it was dangerous and going to kill them. Can you imagine if scientists got a hold of the monsters? Not to mention the monsters that look similar to animals that are hunted (bears, deer, rabbits, etc). Humans would probably treat the monsters way worse that how the Mewmans treated them.

Here's something that makes the "subverting expectations" even dumber: the audience was aware that it would happen! Several episodes ago, the protagonists discuss that they would have to destroy magic. The audience response wasn't shock, It was just "that is stupid, don't do that". Not helping matters is how unthreatening mina was, the fact that a pony took her down immediately being the last straw and led to fans arguing the many, many better ways to finish the show or the final battle. Therefore, I don't understand why he thought the show had a great ending for subverting expectations considering people were already aware of the possibility, the only reason people were surprised was because season 4 was so bad

The problem with this ending was it was obviously rushed. You could tell they were trying to throw in 2-3 seasons into 1 episode. As you also said, they did a poor job explaining plot holes, loose threads and why the loss of magic was necessary, something I think they could have solved with another 2-3 seasons. I honestly started losing interest in the series after they killed off Toffee.
@elfmonster14764 жыл бұрын
That was definitely the moment it took a nosedive. Instead of finding a solution to the "Oops, we accidentally made the antagonist invincible", they literally went with a rushed Deus Ex. And not only that, but he didn't die right away. Instead, he ended up in a state that he, ten minutes prior, had shown himself able to easily regenerate from (One finger is smaller than half a body, after all). And then, they began focusing more on the shipping wars than on the plot, worldbuilding, character development, ect. ect. ect.
@Hellwolf364 жыл бұрын
And they also did little to nothing with the guy who committed the Deus Ex on Toffee. Just 2 eps and they were more about his brother and his relationship with his family. Toffee was literally the best thing going for that series and they got a missed opportunity.

Like, I wouldn't have overthink like that if not for the fact that in the plot, genocide of monsters, wars based on racism, and colonialism, is a thing, the history will repeat itself, why the heck did they not thought about that?
@Cloverfr4 жыл бұрын
@shaquille mccray The worst is not that we are not made to think that. Is not like in a Disney princess movie we are lead to question the existence of monarchy and its perpetuation, they never tackle that, they try in every form to make us think monarchy is the right thing, and their movies about "the rightful heir" are not seen in dirty eyes. But here the issue of racism and war were definitely something that happened, uncountable people and monsters died, they already sold us this concept, how on earth the very same thing will not happen! , is not like mewmans learn to not discriminate and now will teach humans how to get along with them, they are still racist and full of hate. Knives Out being a movie implementing one of, if not the best expectation subversions in movie history, by having the movie change from a "whodunnit" to a "hide the evidence" story, in a way that changes the story for the better by allowing us to get all the information that "whodunnit"s require in an engaging way, as the protagonist tries to hide the clues. If Ryan Fucking Johnson is better at taking criticism and using it to improve his work, you know your writing skills ain't worth shite. I've seen an extremely similar twist to Moon's in the finale of My Little Pony which came out the same year as Cleaved, as a reformed omnipotent Chaos Lord wanted to prepare the anxious main character to become queen and help her gain more confidence so he disguises as an ancient villain to rally other villains together into fighting her. The reason for that twist working better than Moon's is because it's in character for the Chaos Lord to plan these kind of schemes (tho well intentioned this time) since he used to be a villain, and being (at the time) omnipotent, he planned to magically fix everything in case things went out of control (which they did, of course, since this Chaos Lord has always been pretty overconfident in his omnipotence) But Moon was supposed to be the stern but wise mother, not this petty, selfish and short-sighted idiot and both Dire and Nefcy should have addressed it more.

@@alessandromieli7321 I think the problem with the show, and i like mLP, is that they missed a couple off steps in showing how redemption works: At least with Glimmer i fel that she had to pay consequences..and the arguments with Trixie show the issues on both the giving and recieving end. With the other former villains or antagonists..they needed to do a bit better. At least with Neighsay showing him leading the group was a step but still needed to show how much his shortsightedness caused issues. I would also like to point out the "If you don't like it, don't watch it" argument is also weak about his argument about trying to change opinions about shows. Yes, if you are interested in a show then lost interest and do not want to continue watching, that is up to them. But telling someone that, "Oh well if you are negative about it, then you must hate it, so you have no business giving valid critics about it" does nothing to help others seek out the show and form their own opinion of it as well. I will openly admit I am not a big fan of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, but I will say I tried to watch the show for what it is and give legitimate reasons as to why I felt it could have been better. And even for a series that I do like, like Miraculous, I can see where people will have legitimate arguments about the show, and yet, they get bashed for thinking they hate it and don't understand what they see. There is a difference between hating something just to hate it and having valid reasons to be disappointed if something we put time and energy to get invested in turns out not as what we hoped. Heck, there is a difference between hating something just to hate it and being furious when the show decides to spit in the face of its viewers. But telling someone to not watch it if we don't like it robs any good show the opportunity for discussion and healthy debates about what did and did not work for a story. (Sorry for the rant, I just hate that argument so much as it also detracts potential viewers)
