What he speaks of is actually Whole Plant Food Based, not vegan. No oils and no added sugars. I practice a Nutritarian diet which is minimal to near no oil or meats. I practice as close to a WPFB diet but I work, travel and in all instances where I'm not fully in control of my food, I have to be flexible. Both focus on Nutritional Excellence first and last.

Laughing at all of the people who “can’t stand dr Gregor” maybeee because he believes in all of the things that you dont? He’s not an ethical vegan whatsoever. He is strictly plant based for the health benefits and even talks about how you don’t have to give up your favorite foods (meat cheese dairy) but only if you want to be healthier. There’s no agenda besides to help people which is why he barely profits from his books and donates his profits to charities. Also his website is free as well and he makes no money from that either. (Nutrition facts.org... if you want to do more research and learn more about plant based eating for free). He isn’t about money either or for an ethical reason either... so why y’all hating? He is going off of studies that were peer reviewed as well. So chill out. Listen to him even though it goes against what you believe in. Lol.

I used to believe the ketogenic and Paleo claptrap and then I stumbled across Dr. Gregor's work. Once you read all of the evidence supporting his view, no intellectually honest person can deny his position. Although I thought I was healthy, by switching to an almost entirely WFPB diet, I have noticed a number of compelling benefits. In particular, my stamina and recovery from exercise is phenomenal and I am almost 60 now. Basically all Dr. Michael Gregor and his team do is review the scientific peer reviewed literature on nutrition which is about 100,000 new papers yearly. Only a fool would not take him seriously. I'll listen to Dr. Gregor before the Bro scientists any day.

Lee Kurisko, many believe in dr G’s opportunity cost. Every bite is an opportunity to put something better in your mouth. Ok I want to live longest that my genes will allow I’m vegan (maybe) but if I want to be big I’m not so vegan because to be big and with a lot of muscle I need to work out a ton, and have a lot of calories. Females find big and muscle prone guys more attractive, and can more readily pass off spring. But they may die quicker, but for them who cares they’ve already passed genes. But it’s totally a continuum. Between health and muscle. vegan and meat/protein intake until it breaks the body via high acidic and low blood circulation, anti inflammatory and anti-longevity VS more nutrients dense less androgenic , but more circulation, and less cancerous less inflammatory, less acidic dietary system. But the key point is it’s a continuum. So the more plant base you eat the better health wise, but eating some meat or dairy won’t kill you much sooner. As Dr. Ornish says trade offs will be with the amount of, people how far over the continuum you stay.

David Armstrong Interesting and confusing argument there. I really have to disagree with you on your point that women like big muscles on men. That’s what many men think. It’s a turn-off for many women. You can’t generalise like that. Just saying.

CDT Pal From my experience, when I started eating a WFPB vegan diet, to my surprise, I never felt hungry, I could eat the good stuff if I was and it was every satisfying. I started losing weight, feeling great and had more energy. I get tired when I don’t get enough sleep. As for mental fatigue, none at all. It makes sense that if you’re giving your body what it needs, including good carbs that your brain needs, then you’ll have mental clarity.

Maureen Raike I think he was referencing how some Vegans claim that the emotions of the slaughtered animal can affect the person who eats their meat. They believe that somehow the fear, the pain, the trauma the animal suffered gets encapsulated into the flesh tissue and negatively impacts the person who eats it. An example, go to about 12:10 of this Ted Talk kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKvKfp1ppcp-gpI Ted even had to make a disclaimer about this talk saying that it doesn’t coincide with their standards of evidence concerning the claims. Dr. Greger's is so smart. He is not biased in anyway. If he was biased, why would he recommend avoiding plant-based "foods" like coconut oil, refined grains, refined sugars, etc.? That's because he is dedicated to providing us with data from the leading scientific studies on nutrition. He is here to show us the truth about which foods really do harm us and which foods heal and nourish us in a healthy way. He even said himself, he is not a vegan who is fighting for animal/environmental causes. He is a physician who researches scientific evidence, and the evidence just so happens to show us that a whole food plant-based diet (no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish, no animal products at all, no oils, no refined foods) can not only prevent and stop heart disease (the number cause of death in the US), but it can even REVERSE the disease. And that's only number one..but it just so happens to be that the leading scientific data also suggests that a whole food plant based diet can prevent, stop, and reverse the next fifteen top causes of death in the US. That is why Dr. Greger wrote his book How Not to Die, showing the science behind how a whole food plant based diet can prevent, stop, and reverse the top sixteen causes of death in the US. He also has many versions of his How Not to Die presentation for free to watch on youtube, along with tons of other videos on specific studies on nutrition. Everyone should watch his presentation, even if you think you don't want to change you're diet, it is only a benefit to yourself to learn more about something you are already interested in.

I follow dr Gregor, listen to all his podcast and do believe he is helping 1000’s of people. However, he tries to hide his biases. For example, he was talking about diet for mental illness, and one study he cites women on their period as his example , but he glosses over that. He extrapolates fish to be all types of fish, including some with almost almost no tested levels of contamination such as sardines or anchovies. He seems to do a fair job of not being overly biased and brings a lot of light to food industry. However, in one of his videos he indicates the longest living people are people who eat some meat or fish, but speculates vegans can surpass this with the right adjustments. Don’t know, it’s not been proven yet. However we do know that vegans can be healthy and live second longest. And people who are carnivores and people who eat a ton of processed crap, vegan or not will die sooner. French fries, wine and beer are all vegan. They are not whole food but certainly vegan. Now I’m going to go drink a beer.

1. Hooper L, et al. Reduction in saturated fat intake for cardiovascular disease. Cochrane Database Systematic Review, 2015. Details: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, performed by the Cochrane collaboration - an independent organization of scientists. It is probably the best review you can find on this at the moment, and includes 15 randomized controlled trials with over 59,000 participants. Each of these studies had a control group, reduced saturated fat or replaced it with other types of fat, lasted for at least 24 months and looked at hard endpoints, such as heart attacks or death. Results: The study found no statistically significant effects of reducing saturated fat, in regard to heart attacks, strokes or all-cause deaths. Although reducing saturated fat had no effects, replacing some of it with polyunsaturated fat led to a 27% lower risk of cardiovascular events (but not death, heart attacks or strokes). Conclusion: People who reduced their saturated fat intake were just as likely to die, or get heart attacks or strokes, compared to those who ate more saturated fat. However, partially replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (but not death, heart attacks or strokes). These results are similar to a previous Cochrane review, done in 2011 (2).

Michael Greger is not a researcher himself, he reads through and presents to people research that explains why plant based whole foods style eating is very healthy. Plus some other topics that people ask about. He also gives recommendations based on that, to people who want to eat accordingly. I think it is really great that he gets to present his view of the research to people outside the plant based/vegan circles, like here! Would be even nicer to have people from both sides really calmly and methodically look at each others arguments and the research(AND experiences) that both sides present to support their views. I know Kris Kressner and Joel Kahn debated on Joe Rogan but also sort of mostly gave their side of the argument. Some vegan youtuber reviewed and critisized the research that Kresser cited afterwards. That kind of thing but in dialogue would be interesting. Maybe we will always be polarized when it comes to arguing and debating, but it gets more interesting when we first get familiar with what the other is actually saying and why. A lot of components to the diet issue of course... I mean the whole vegan argument... but here at least you are narrowing it down enough to start an exploration. I liked it when another plant based doctor, Joel Furman, said that he’d love to see and exploration on how much food from animal sources would be safe or even beneficial, is there a limit, etc. I mean that kind of thinking, more of a will to explore, is nice. As to that particular issue it is probably genetic/ individual to a large extent. And maybe that is what we could find out if we explored together. And the vegans could suggest stuff like lab meat solutions for people who need animal foods to thrive and live long and well and the be confronted with research on that saying that the ”real thing” is better because whatever is found out 😂... nerding it down. Long story short. There is definitely more to life than healthful eating. But... once we start looking into it, it IS i big topic. Especially with all the environmental, economic and etical issues that go hand in hand with any issues pertaining to health and longelivity.

30:00 Sounds like a lot of eating if you go on a plant based diet. Also it requires a modern society, mainly shipping and other transport to be on. Is this good for the environment?
@Simplement_Chrétien

Yes it is. Unfortunately, Dr. Greger forgot(or just doesnt know)to talk about Canada's situation in the right way. I'm living in Quebec, Canada where local fruits and veggies farmers are doing a fantastic job to compete against foreign compagnies as much on the quality than the price. Affortable (and seasonaly cheap), awesome products and local. And EVEN IF there was no such thing as local farms. If you look one and the other, which is plant and meat, each of them require the same travel distance (therefore, same gas emissions for the transportation part). What is the difference then? Ans: production environnemental cost!!! and thats the KEY part. Producing meat involves way more water(for grains and/or grass and to livestock itself) and way more gas emissions because of the methane that cows produces(cow farts basically) because they're overfed and overbred. Also, in response to the "modern society" thing, if there is something less modern than natural whole plant based food, i'd like to know. When i think of modern society, i usually think about industry, meat, processed meat, rafined grain, white flour, cheese, etc. Health harmfull food is a poisonnous luxury of the modern society. I hope you take my response with all the respect i put in it :) Always fun to see people with interest on the subject! Have a good one ! :) PS: sorry for my english quality. French is my mother tongue.
