How not to Screw Up the Next Die Hard Movie

What Happened to the Die Hard Series? Not much actually; only the last movie screwed it up. So in the spirit of Christmas I'm going to do something different. Here are my six tips for How Not to Screw Up the Next Die Hard Movie.

I have a few tips as well. 1.) A better sidekick. They don't need to bring Zeus back, they should but they don't. We just need a sidekick that we care about. I liked Jake because it was finally a sidekick that was as capable as John was but he was just a fucking douchebag that could't get over his childhood issues with his father just like his sister. I always hate movies that have children that are mad at their fathers for doing things that a father is supposed to like working but it makes me even more annoyed when the character's an adult. Especially when that character is an adult that now does what the father does, or an enhanced version as is the case with Jake, and should now be more understanding. If they were to bring Jake back, which would make sense, they should make him similar to his father but different in certain ways like a son would be. Another idea is to bring in a sidekick that's in the wrong place at the wrong time like Zeus was. 2.) Change the humor dyamic. They need a dedicated comic relief character, a non action bad guy type like Theo in the first movie would be good. John should't be the source of the humor, his humor should be incidental and sarcastic. It should be more like a defense mechanism. 3.)They need bad guys that make sense as to why John would really be involved. Think about it, the first two movies were about a man coming to see his wife and she becomes a target by extension of what she was doing or where she was giving him a reason to stay. In part three, *SPOILER ALERT* John doubled as a smokescreen and icing on the cake *END SPOILER* so he had no way out being that his job was to protect and serve. In the 4th, I didn't understand really why he didn't just leave that kid in the hands of the local authorities. In the 5th, his son was in the CIA, this was supposed to be way out of his league...well, maybe not his after what he's been through but a grossly out of jurisdiction police officer should've just left after he found out what his son was up to.

My family enjoys watching the first two Die Hard movies around Christmastime too. I actually prefer Die Hard 2 just a tad bit more than the original, but the first two movies will always be Christmas classics!

A late response, but the channel "Your Movie Sucks" already did something quite similar to that, although it had less focus on the details, presuming you already know whats wrong, and shifts that onto making jibes towards the director. Watching the series is as good as any other series riffing on old tv shows or movies.

Discovered all your vids, loved em, especially this and the Terminator ones, then totally forgot about em, took me a while to re-find them now...and now I'm back to diggin 'em again! By the way, as is mentioned in the comments, I didn't know Die Hard was based on/influenced by a book at all...that makes total sense. I think the strongest sequel is easily "With A Vengeance", and that took an unrelated screenplay called 'Simon Says' which contained all the bombing sequences and tension, and combined/modified into the "Simon Gruber" plot, which worked amazingly well IMO

The main problem with A Good Day to Die Hard is that it thought all it needed was Bruce Willis and the words "Die Hard" in the title to make a Die Hard movie, but unfortunately, it's not that simple

Mychael Darklighter Had no idea about that! That makes total sense. The "With A Vengeance" was made from taking a screenplay about a mad bomber called "Simon Says" and modifying it into a DH flick, and that first half is amazingly strong, so I'd say it worked pretty well

I'm trying to think of some other series you should review. ,.. maybe some genre series like What happened to Zombies, Vampires, Superheroes, or Handi-Cam (all that crap that spawned from The Blair Witch Project). In reality I could probably listen to you complain about the difference between margarine and butter with that accent, but more movie series soon would be a wonderful treat.

I'm not a fan of the Die Hard movies, unfitting dialogues at certain situations, over the top here and there, kinda a bit ridiculous, etc... but that's what those movies are about and I must admit that I enjoyed watching them. McClane is a good protagonist for such movies unlike many others, Bruce Willis did well. Alan Rickman also did a great job as the villain. The movies are entertaining, they do their job with combination of action, drama and humor but yes the five movie was out of place. If they go back to the roots of the first film, I would be interested in watching the 6th one.

I always thought that the series had a decline in quality with each new installment. That said, I think the first three were good, and when I saw the fourth in theaters, I felt like I got my money's worth, even though I've never had the urge to watch it ever again. I don' even have to speak for the fifth - I didn't need to see the movie to know how bad it was. Part of it is I think the decline in good pacing, from the first onward. Part of that is that the series is attached to John McClane. We didn't know who he was at the beginning of the first Die Hard, so we have the first half-hour of the movie spent mostly on character developmen, with very, very little action. In Die Hard 2, John kills two bad guys in the first ten minutes. Die Hard 3 managed to pace better by having the Simon Says puzzles as the conflict, rather than gunning down mooks, but then in Die Hard 4 you're back into shooting goons in the first ten minutes. I think that has been a major flaw in the series. They're not so grounded in an actual human being anymore. You touched upon this in the video, but, well, he's shooting people in the first ten minutes - that doesn't really work. I can go ten minutes without shooting somebody in a first-person shooter videogame, I think I can manage just fine doing the same in a movie. Second, which you also briefly touched upon, the action set pieces. The two big ones in the first movie, I would say, is the rooftop sequence and the sequence when he straps explosives to a chair and sends it down the elevator chute. With each new sequel, they not only ramped up the size, but the number of them as well. In Die Hard 4, he took out a fucking fighter jet with an 18-wheeler. If that was how Die Hard 4 ended, I would've been pissed, but it with something much more based than that, fortunately. They don't even need to be big, just suspenseful for this movie's universe. Dangling from a rooftop isn't scary in a Superman movie, and thats fine, thats a Superman movie. It works in Die Hard though, you don't have to try to keep up with Michael Bay in his explosion pissing contest, just a handful of action set pieces that would be intimidating to an average joe, with really good build-ups. You don't have to bring out a fucking battleship to strike fear in a single, unarmoured, relatively unarmed human being, as one gun pointed in the right direction will do the job just fine.

A great sequel compliments or provides greater emphasis to it's predecessors. After Die Hard 5, I can't see how 6 can 'fix' the franchise. (Note: I never finished watching 5 so I don't know where the story left off the series. I stopped at the car chase around the beginning- so terrible, I couldn't get through it and I'm a fan of the Die Hard series also). I would've liked to have seen the 5th revolve around a school in lockdown with john mcclane brought in because the school's in his jurisdiction. Picture the end of Kindergarten cop where the villain has a hostage and it's so quiet but with john mcclane and not schwarzenegger and with a lot more serious tone as the film should touch on some issues of gun violence and who should be judge, jury and executioner and have john not want to be the executioner. Have him conflicted and forced into making difficult decisions to save lives and his own. The movie would make us care again about lives and it would make things a lot more difficult john to take out the enemy as they to would be young adults. And then the 6th movie- Die Hard on 6th Avenue: Where John McClane has to protect his family and his families' neighbourhood after visiting them trying to rekindle with them but John McClane has made a lot of enemies (mcclane cant get away from his past) who would be out for McClane's blood and it won't matter which McClane's blood they get- if you get what I mean. (kind of a similar to The Punisher's origin- but the whole act of the slaughter of the family is a movie). By the way just because punishers family is slaughtered doesn't necessarily mean mcclanes would be to. lol

Great review and ideas there LittleJimmy835 ! I agree very much about John Mc Clane's wife Holly , they should stay with emotions ( but nowadays movies emotions are like an iceberg ) . Same as many other second roles they could simply put them back in . For me Die Hard franchise stopped after Die Hard 3 . Again for those CGI effects and for the most silliest scenes in Die Hard 4 ( there are 2 of them ) 1. Yeah right destroying a helicopter with a car ( is typical new generation action movies ) but something like that could never be possible so it is unrealistic . 2. That F-16 Aircraft scene also unrealistic and since there i understood the franchise is done for good ! The first four Die Hard films were a great mixture of action, drama and humor. Die Hard 5 on the other hand is a mixture of goat puke, cat piss and dog shit. Director John Moore gave the biggest middle finger I've ever seen and doesn't give a damn about what the fans think. Die Hard 5 is the worst sequel I've ever seen in my life and the third worst movie ever made!.

i didn't even like live free or die hard, because it was a tech/national security film. a good day to die hard was a democracy film made by idiots whom don't respect bruce willis character merit nor know nothing about film making. as for a sixth film we had "live free" for part 4 to have the series go out on a "king of the world" note try "give me liberty or die hard" and bring in DMX or Omar Epps as the president and satirize the obama admin. just my thoughts.
