Some good advice. I have always owned my own businesses and when I decided to go into the lawn service business, I was blessed with having knowledge on websites, marketing etc. The mistake I made was thinking how my mowing days as a kid were going to relevant 35 years later. I can't emphasize enough how important quality paying clients are. You're better off keeping a regular job and building with good pricing. Also, I avoid real estate agents. As you said, they're usually demanding and want you to drop everything for not very good pay. They promise you everything under the sun and never deliver. Since I'm getting older I prefer less lawns that get more detail work at a higher price. These are premium clients. I work 3 days a week and do well. The extra days allow me to do extra jobs, such as mulching, pruning. I really enjoy that because I can price it properly, not be rushed and the clients get great service. Patient clients are the best. I don't have a problem if the client is demanding, as long as the demands are with in the amount of pay and it's a service I offer. Bottom line, think and plan before you do. Always under promise and over deliver!

When selling skilled labor there are no discounts...finding high paying customers is key. I don't work for people expecting favors or rock bottom pricing. I've learned there are many customers willing to pay premium prices for premium work. When I want to work cheap or free I'll work for a friend or family member.

He buddy just read your comment go for it I started 9 years ago with a shovel and rake my company is a multi million dollar company now I have 450 lawn just lawns I make alot of money and I do fences painting sod rock pavers and all of the above and yard clean up that's what I did first before I went to lawns now I have 5 crews I run and work vehicles just put your mind to it and stick with it and you'll become a multimillionaire yourself but don't forget landscaping's hard work but just make sure you're up every day and you're doing the work on something you love if you're just starting the first 3 months are very hard after that it's easy

Good video Jason! We have been in business for over a decade now and have always charged a flat monthly rate. We charge monthly ( March- November).If the price of that particular yard is ($110 per month) ,then it is ($990÷32 cuts) per year. That's $30 per cut. We service the yard by-weekly in the spring and fall and weekly in the summer. This schedule works best for our business here working with warm season turf. I find this payment schedule easier for the customers and our business to deal with because, you are only collecting from them 9 times verses 32 times🤷‍♂️just my opinion😉

I left the lawncare business for detailing and made a small fortune. Got tired of that moved into flipping houses. That's where the money's at. But foundation for anything I done started with what I learned from experience I got from starting my own small business. @Andrew Maddron Good luck to you, sir! And I genuinely mean that. If I could go back and give myself advice when I was young and just started working it would he to go ahead and invest into a home as soon as you can qualify for a loan on one ( which is a lot easier than some think). Even if it is double wide on some decent property, don't matter; just get your money going into something that will bring you a return. This way, all ( most all anyways) of the money you pay on your home, you get back at some point. Renting is frankly throwing money away. In my case, the money I put into my first home has trippled because property value has sky rocketed where I live. Again, best of luck, but you work hard and save you won't need luck. You can make your own!! Also:Keep your credit good, but if you do take a setback of some kind; you can repair it within 2-3 years. I've been there done that, too.

How are you investing for retirement? You don't have an employer match for your IRA.

An “employer match” is simply a part of your compensation as an employee. Your pay is negotiated at a lower rate because of this. It also affects your raises negatively. If you do have a match, you should at least get it, because it’s yours. As a business owner or anyone else, nothing is stopping you from saving for retirement. Do you need a 401k? Nope, you can start with a Roth IRA. Max it out and don’t draw from it, the same with an IRA. The younger you start, the better. You can buy stocks and bonds anytime, you do not need a 401k with a match. Having a match implies that you are simply given money, but that is money that you earned. You can always save and invest your money, no matter who you work for.
