People have to remember, Gi-Huns goal is not "save as many players as possible" his goal is "end the games no matter what", that rebellion was his one and only opportunity and he took it.
@nont184115 күн бұрын
To be fair, I don’t think Gi-Hun was an “idiot” for “trying to be a hero”. I think the show wants to show that every rebellion can backfire because it’s a struggle against the deep-rooted status quo and it could cost the rebels greatly (like the death of Jung Bae represents how there will always be a tragic sacrifice in these struggles. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows). The real challenge at this time is whether Gi-Hun will stay true to the cause after this huge challenge and keeps pushing to end the Squid Game or will he become too cynical with everything and turns into the new Front Man himself, which will prove 001 right.

The defining trait of Gi-Hun has always been how naive he was. In season 1, he was fully ready to give up on everything during the last game to save his friend, ignoring the fact that none of the two would actually survive without the money. He even asks a guard if he could have chocolate milk instead of regular milk. In season 2, the character is much more determined, but still keeps his naivety. He believes that if he is determined enough, he can put an end to the games and save everyone, not realizing that he just wants to make things worse for people in dire need of money. His actions throughout the series show that he couldn't actually have power and make things change by himself without outside help.

Honestly, I enjoyed S2 more than S1. Like entire context behind the games is so perfectly cruel, that Im way more invested watching Frontman repeatedly prove his point to 456 without ever feeling like he is unnaturally tipping the odds. It's soul crushing seeing 456 desperately try to do something to stop the games, only to make situation worse almost every single time. When he suggested leaving people to die as part of the plan... it didnt feel out of place to me. It felt as if he finally got broken. He put himself in the situation without an out. It's tragic honestly. He has the best, the most selfless of intentions, but good intentions are not nearly enough to save his situation at this point. If anything, my biggest complaint would how Cop Guy plot somehow still is completely irrelevant to the plot... like cmon, let him make ANY progress already.
@LittleMan275 күн бұрын
How is Jun-ho’s story irrelevant? He’s been trying to find the island where his brother, In-ho/Front Man, shot him, to snap him out of it & end the games. The Captain of the ship was working for the games, purposefully steering them away from the island, stopping them from reaching Gi-hun. We have Seong Gi-hun as a player trying to stop the games. Hwang Jun-ho is trying to reach Gi-hun, to find Hwang In-ho, to stop the games. Hwang In-ho, who might (idk) change his heart after going through the Squid Games again, and seeing his brother try to save him. There’s No-eul, who is probably about to start rebelling from the inside. Hyun-ju wants to fight, but was saved by Geum-ja & Yong-sik. And there’s Dae-ho who inadvertently might’ve saved their chances by keeping the rest of the mags saved with the players.

What I love about how they wrote Gihun isn’t just about him being a bad hero, but also how trauma has blinded him from the real problem. He spends almost the whole second season talking about “saving” people from the games, but we should remember that he’s the same man who bet on a homeless man life just to prove to a dying old bstard that he was wrong. Him using the other players as bait and then asking other players to join him on a suicide mission perfectly ties to the ending of the first season and reinforces Gihun’s true intentions, which isn’t about saving other players. His real goal was always to stop the games and put the higher-ups to justice (kill them). *”Sacrifice a few for the good of many” - “The end justifies the means”* The writers made him go full Machiavellian, confirming that he’s just a broken man who’s frantically seeking vengeance and also desperately trying to prove that the Frontman is wrong exactly how he did with Ilnam. All he’s done for three years straight is obsess over the games, so much so that he cut all ties with his family, friends and even the people he was supposed to take care of. And all of this wasn’t for the good of the people who got/will potentially be exploited by the elite, but because that’s how he’s decided to cope with the survivor’s guilt. That’s why he’s not the hero and he’ll never be, unless he won’t proceed with his mission with only his interests at heart.

I agree. I heard a lot of people say that 456 would have known that 001 was the frontman, but they are forgetting that 456 is not that smart. He is naturally trusting, and despite his efforts, he is easily outsmarted every time. Every plan he had to get back of the games failed and led to more deaths. He does this throughout the whole season. Man can't catch a break.
@wezzuh24824 күн бұрын
It just does not make sense for him to be so trusting anymore. After what happened in S1 where Oh-il Nam revealed himself to be the master of the games, this should have shattered his trust to near completion. This is my biggest gripe with this season. 456 should not be trusting towards anyone except maybe for the people who knows from outside the games (like his friend), he should be completely and utterly paranoid. It is just more sensible character development.
@dnycebushton50084 күн бұрын
exactly...people want him to be a completely different person. This is good writing. In season 1 he wasnt patient and lacked self-preservation...same guy, he's just been through some stuff now, so he is angrier with less to lose. He didnt ask any of those people to make him their leader, he was just giving them some "game." I dont think he ever wanted to be a hero...he was pissed & he crashed out & went back to the game. I think the showrunners ever any intention of 456 to be seen as a hero.
@bro-dy684822 сағат бұрын
@@wezzuh2482not really though. From a realistic point of view; he cannot stop the Squid Games alone. And with that comes an issue. Should he be paranoid or should he trust the people around him? From what I saw in the show; 456 is suspicious of 001 but he doesn’t want to acknowledge it because he thinks he needs him to be on his side. Most of the people in the games have no interest in rebelling and just want to make their money and leave regardless of Team X or O. Being paranoid would only alienate himself from anyone who could potentially help him so, in the games, it makes sense that he trusts them.

Gihun is a very powerful character. He is naive and not as smart as many people , in favt he is a failure but what makes him hero is his integrity, kindness and empathy. These emotions are strong and not something which many other efficient people can possess. He was ready to leave the prize money unlike 455 players who played alongside him , he chose to not be affected by greed. Further most former winners including thr front man had happy lives or became part of the system. Gi hun is unique as he sacrificed his own happiness including cutting contact with his daughter to end this . Obviously ending such a tying is not easu, he doesnot have much clue, the government is not in his support, he doesnot have many clues and is not even very smart. But with his resources and bravery he tries to end this system. He first teies to locate thr front man and kill him , it was not possible. So he risks himself to go into the games bit looses his tracker. Since all the plans fail he tries to pursuade the people , didn't work. He tries to help them out , didnot work. When he sees no hope as people were greedy he decides to end the system which activates such negative emotions in vulnerable people so with limited resourves conducts an internal rebellion. At the end Gi hun is a character whcih reprsents that its not strength but integrity which makes a person a hero.

Very interesting analysis. Like the recruiter says “he just got lucky” and the fifth game(him picking a high number) or teaming up with 001 in Marbles proves this. Because he got out alive, he idolises himself and plays the hero with no clear plan. He undermines his own logic by sacrificing some of the X’s so they can have a small chance of rebellion. Even the front man smirks at this! I can’t help but think the small chance at achieving this ties back into the Squid Game itself. Players are manipulated to think they have a chance,by the elites, and that they’re playing out of free will. I also enjoyed the take on democracy this season, the voting is flawed because people, like Thanos, influence it and since violence is permitted in the dorms many X’s lose their lives so they’ll be a point where the vote won’t even be close like it used to. I feel this is another way of saying that the games are fair and shifting the blame on to the players for keep playing. This makes me think of the Bread and Lottery scene where the homeless pick lottery. Why? Because the system has manipulated people into believing that they could be that “needle in a haystack”. So overall, I think the season has a focus on why people play the very low odds with high risk, eg: Gi Hun losing his friends, the homeless not eating and the players risking their lives in the next game. The show explores why people make these stupid decisions and why it really isn’t their fault in the end

This time around Gi Hun made it impossible to stop the games once he told everyone that he won the games previously because ultimately people think that if he could do it so could they. Gihun in s2 is naive and far from being a genius which is great because he wasn't that way in the first season either. I think people expect him to be a completely different character just because he's more serious now. I wish the season started with him trying to use his money to make things better for poor people but eventually his desire for revenge took him over. It feels like nobody in the season ever acknowledges, I also find it sad we don't get any scenes with his daughter, the person he was fighting for. I understand he needs to want to get revenge in order to continue to be in the story, but I wish we could have explored other things to do with the money. To me; it seems that ,towards the end, 456 realizes he can not save everyone and they do not want to be saved or save themselves and his little group are the only ones who will go through with his plan. I think the whole idea of S2 is breaking the status quo. The procedures of the games are normal for all of the players. They will follow the roles of “this is how you win and this is how you get out.” That’s probably why the Frontman smirked at him for saying the sacrifices line because 456 is beginning to think just like him. He is becoming cynical and nihilistic just like he did and he’s beginning not to care whether people live or die to further his goal.

You know, there was this one story I heard about in high school. I don't remember it that well but I had to do a report on it. There was one summary I described this protagonist. "She had the intentions of a hero but lacked the success of one" Her goals were noble and she did it with the intention of saving people but in the end she lost. And though my memories are a bit fuzzy I still remember her going into it with good intentions only to fail to save anyone in the end. Looking back at it now, I believe that same summary could apply to Gi-Hun in Season 2 of Squid Game. He undeniably wanted to save peoples lives, you cannot deny he wanted to be a hero, he cared about the people he was stuck in this game with. But like you described he failed. I feel like in general his biggest flaw as a hero is being too trusting, if he was a bit more skeptical he would of likely won. He probably should of figured out that 001 was the front man. The old man was 001 as well and he was revealed as the one running the games this entire time. He should of used this info to figure out that the 001 player was probably evil all along. Still, I will give Gi-Hun this, even if he wasn't the smartest about it, even if he could of done a lot better, the fact that he tried at all is enough to make me admire him.

That whole second season felt like a giant question, or critique. Gi-Hun spent so much time trying to take then down, spouting how evil the games are so the front man decided to call him on it I thought the addition of making the players vote after every game (Apposed to the players have to ask to leave themselves after the first vote) was really smart. It was like they was flaunting it in Gi-Hun’s face that everyone is here of their own choices And the decided to have to make the character wear their stance on their shirts, blatantly dividing the players into friends and foes was so genius. Obviously I’m not trying to say “the squid games did nothing wrong” but I like how the antagonist is challenging Gi-Hun’s beliefs about the games, and showing that it’s not JUST the games that are the root of all the problems like Gi-Hun so proudly proclaims, but it’s the inherit greed in people. Stopping the game isn’t as simple as stopping the front man because people’s greed and desperation don’t just go away because of that. I think they did a very brilliant job and I’m really excited for season 3

I think you should've renamed the title to "how to write a character who fails to be a hero" I understand you already clarified later in the video and I agree with most of the points you made. I feel like it's a little misleading because at first we (or at least I) thought the video was to criticize the writing that Gi Hun is supposed to be a hero but the writer fails to do so in which is no way the intention in this season. Gi Hun shows attempts of being a hero but he doesn't succeed in doing so (which is okay). Overall good video!

I agree the title sound like he’s being negative and almost feels like clickbait.

Ya, cuz it is clickbait; let’s face it the other guys idea for a title would’ve prolly buried the video in the algorithm since it sounds more boring I think the current title is fine since the guy who made the video clarified what he meant at the start and again nearer the end

Gihun literally turned everyone he knows to go with his plan, this is basically why In-ho decided to abandon Gihun’s plan. In-ho joined the game to test our protagonists judgement and to see how he will handle things but it’s apparent that Gihun came here not to peacefully end this. The main point is that Gihun didn’t understand what In-ho said “these games will continue until the world changes”. If Gihun would’ve really went with the voting system and kept it all friendly then In-ho would have never betrayed him and would’ve been by his side till the end because only then Gihun would’ve proven to him that people DO change. In the beginning of the games In-ho laughs at Gihun’s judgements on stopping the game, then near the end he gets intrigued by him since Gihun didn’t break under the pressure and still wants to save people, but little did In-ho know that Gihun was broken long ago and his plan was never peaceful. The whole season makes it clear that Gihun is not a hero so idk, I haven’t watched the video yet I just wanted to share my opinion since I would’ve never thought of Gihun as a hero

i really enjoyed the first episode, just seeing Gi-Hun actively trying to bring an end to the games was just soo engaging that i almost just would've preferred for less of the games and more of him just on this quest. it was almost the opposite of my family who were bored by e1 & 2 (haven't seen it yet as everyone wanted to skip it), and just wanted to skip to the games and the killings. My only major gripe is how considering how changed of a man Gi-Hun is - he for some reason fails to question whether one of the new players is an inside man (ie In-Ho - Front Man), i mean not only is this game psychologically messed up to turn people like Sang-Woo - his best friend from s1 into a cold monster, but he LITERALLY was manipulated by the previous player 001 and for some reason doesn't hold any semblance that anyone in his circle could be tricking him just like Il-Nam in s1, I mean just a bit of scepticism and side-eyeing and hesitation to this man that holds SOO many comparisons to the previous 001. The "sacrifice" that happens is honestly just as grating for me, I feel like Gi-Hun should've done the best he can to protect the "X's" to the best of his ability - perhaps not going to kill the "O's" but at the very least making everyone aware and setting up defences. In the end the choice felt more like a action for the Front Man to say something like "you are just as messed up as they were, you were willing to let your own people die, for your own cause" or something like that. I understand these examples wouldn't make much change with the overarching story, it just made watching the show and Gi-Hun's character feel agrivating, like it wasn't consistent, you can still end the season how it does, with the In-Ho betraying them, Dae-Ho retreating back in the room with the ammo, Jung-Bae's death i just feel like it didn't end up sticking to what was established of Gi-Hun at this point (his determination to try and keep as many people alive as possible, and his trusting of In-Ho)
@Igndark-rc6jh4 күн бұрын
456 is a hero however the front mans whole goal to join the games was to prove GI Hun wrong and GI Hun at first starts thinking that no one needs to die because of what he went through with o il nahm but as season 2 progressed he later on realized that people need to die for the greater good season 2 is there to show the growth in his philosophy not to make him a hero.

The people in there had a choice to either leave and get some money or stay and possibly get more money but with a heavy chance of death like the bread scene. You could choose to either have guaranteed food for your survival or waste your food on a chance to get a lot of money. Another thing is that Gi-Hun could have either chosen the safer option of attacking the os or warning the xs but chooses the more dangerous option or trying to take over and end the game. In all scenarios the people who gambled did not get what they wanted showing that it was never worth it.

I think hes falling from being a hero but might have an arc which will end in him being a hero. I think in-ho was extremely similar to gi-hun. Very similar backstories and upbringing, and he probably also wanted to stop the games, but ended up becoming the frontman after his views changed and became nihilistic. He’s trying to drag down gi-hun with him and make him see the world like he does.

I loved Squid Game Season 2 because the writers chose to do something different and cause player 456 is so flawed we don't get a vanilla predictable story/hero story arc. People are giving bad reviews because they're probably too used to predictable Hollywood trash and wanted a remake of season 1.

I mean imo it says a lot people believe he is going to be the next front man, or he will fall into that belief that the 2 001's have a point. Hell season 2 is 001 showing Gi that he is fighting for people who he shouldn't put his trust on. That as many of him or say 222 or 120, people who need it or are noble, that their deaths would be tragic, there is say 100 or everyone who pick to keep going, to straight up beg for more death for money. Good people die, but so many will keep betraying or hurting till someone who gets out a changed person is there. So i think they want him to not be a hero.

Added Thought Logically taking down Squid Game is pointless because there will always underground gambling games where people will risk there lives. The protagonist acts like Squid Game is a 1 of a kind thing, when it's not. I get saying it's a hopeless cause is not the best way to end the story, but it would be realistic. In the series Kaiji the Ultimate Survivor the protagonist doesn't destroy the group that abused him and his allies but he is able to escape them and its treated as a happy ending.

That’s y I tell ppl look at it like this say killing the O’s to end the game is the Bread from episode 1 and say sacrificing the X’s nd then sacrificing more to capture the frontman is the Lottery Ticket. Gi-Hun is choosing a gamble knowing the odds a next to none instead of just saving those he can. Cause at least if he was gon sacrifice ppl y did he sacrifice the ppl on his side the X’s the very ppl who wanna live. So because who took that “lottery ticket” and started a rebellion so he can be a hero the X’s died for nun and games are gonna continue and the people left even those who wanted to stay majority would be alive if he had just ended the game like Young-Il suggested

My issue with the season is for the most part, the reasons people chose to stay felt extremely fake and forced for the sake of the plot. Gi-Hun doesn't say the second game will be the same as what he played, he even catches himself and specifically says when he is SURE it is the same game he is going to tell everyone. Outside of that small group, he didn't go around telling everyone what it was which means he wasn't wrong. . . If the others decided to spread it, they were the wrong ones. Also everyone going "one more game, we can win more money and nobody has to die to these children games!" Felt fake, forced, and idiotic. It's already been made clear to them the money increases when people die. . . It's fully in the open people HAVE to die for the money to increase and yet it feels like they blatantly forget or ignore it for the sake of plot. Because of things like that and the general lack of character development a few had, the majority of the characters this season felt dumbed down to a childs intelligence for the sake of plot.

5:32 I honestly think he said this because he felt it was too late to save everyone. He's IN it now, and has to make compromises again because all else has failed. Plus the way then pan to Inho (001) it seems he's falling into a mental trap where Inho is trying to prove the games aren't cruel because the sacrafice is worth it. It's not, the games are still shit and this proves nothing, but it could be the start of that further corruption of 456

He isnt your typical successful hero. Hes failing in stopping the games. The front man is playing his own game to destroy Gi-Huns will that he can change anything. 6:13 I don’t think it’s written badly. He understands if the game progresses more people will likely be lost until one wins like the last game. There’s no guarantee they’d come out with more people even if they fought as the other side is clearly more determined and savage. Even if they won, the next game would incur even more guaranteed losses. His move would be unexpected and have a solid chance of disrupting the game. It really could have if the traitor hadn’t undermined their efforts.

I thought the show was good I was never really bored, but I was disappointed I will have to wait months to see part two of this season's story. Phasing-wise, I would say the first season was better. I also feel that season one did better with the developing characters. I was much more impacted by the deaths in season 1 than I was in season 2.

6:16 you know what you're 100% right that is "bad" writing but the thing that makes it not is the very fact of yes he did throw all those people under the bus and that does make him morally wrong with it because a lot of people will die but at the same time what can he or anyone else really do if they didn't try to kill the other side first the other side was going to go for them first instead at that point and that itself is good writing he had so much faith in everybody but too bad that he put a bit of his trust in the wrong people and well LET THIS SEASON'S BEGIN And also one more thing matpat maybe spitting a little bit when he said our main character maybe a criminal in some sense sadly he may not be the hero but heck at least he's trying 7:10 so you're special the one who makes the plans the one who was say everyone free the one who's considered a hero and the one who prevented the most deaths but you're also the one that gay people false hope about the games being the same thing every time you also agree and threw under the bus like half of the amount of people that you were trying to save and the thing that I do find completely hilarious about you is a very fact that you never ever thought of scenario that we could have just shot you far before you even said a word and HUH I was like how about we indulge his little game his little hero Renaissance moment let's see how things would change that will probably be fun to watch other than the boring stuff that we've been seeing for the past 35 years heck I even joined a few of them just for the heck of it because it was getting so freaking boring just to see how things will change your bed and you know what more people died Moore organs for us oh yeah you didn't know about that well that's also one of the reasons why these games exist where is saints that you seem so special well.....💥 Well the special hero gets to live guess who didn't spell again was there a hero or was there someone that was just lucky you tell me in the next squid game And that's how I would do a villain monologue
