@@sratus He was a singer before he signed with Stock Aitken and Waterman. He clearly had no input into that music, they were called the "Hit factory" for a reason. Stock Aitken and Waterman produced and released songs like they were mass producing goods in a factory. He was offered fame and fortune, so he clearly took the opportunity like many would. Then left and released his own stuff. Clearly it's hard to then push back against the pre-conceptions people have of him being another pop star puppet.

I think Bill Hicks might have really hated the guy, because of the music. Unless that was just Bill's persona Normally when people say "you need to separate the art of the artist" it's to defend the art when the artist was a terrible person. Bill went the other way around. He wouldn't separate the art from the artist, so that artist was automatically a bad person if their art was contemptuous of his values As I got older, started to think maybe Bill was not all that great a person himself. He was a misogynist for starters. He was unreasonable in his gatekeeping of art. He told some pretty messed up jokes about young woman, with the implication seemingly that they were underage. I won't defend him anymore. He was a legend for a lot of reasons. I've never seen him actually get read for this stuff. People by and large seem to view him in a pretty rosey light. And there's reasons for that. But I listened to every little thing of his that I could find, a thousand times, it's all in my head. And I think when you do that, and you grow up, a picture emerges of someone that put their own art and ego and appetites above the lives of the people around them. And that's a sad thing to realise about someone you once respected. ... sorry, this has nothing to do with anything. It's just something I always think about when the topic of Rick Astley comes up, and I realise, against all odds, I think I actually respect Rick more than Bill. The best of what Bill did dwarves the best of what Rick did. But that's not enough. The worst of what Bill did is makes any criticism of Rick seem ridiculous

I have more and more respect for Rick Astley with every interview of him I see on KZbin. Having only seen the videos, where he's dancing, and, yes, rick-rolling, I got the impression he was just a pale-faced dude with a voice that couldn't POSSIBLY be THIS guy's, singing in front of dance music. And, of course, I never PICKED UP the CD covers and looked at "Whenever You Need Somebody" or "Hold Me In Your Arms" to see that he played instruments and that he WROTE songs, but I did like "Strong Strong Man," and "Cry For Help". I'm glad to see him around, and I'm glad he's happy making music and performing. His birthday is next Tuesday (Feb. 6). We were both born in 1966.

Rick's always been cool. I left school in '89 and there was this one lad who looked just like Rick, 100% spitting image, he did his hair like Rick and we all called him Rick. He liked it, we liked it, nobody called him Rick as an insult, we all thought it was great that he looked like Rick. Rick Astley has always been a legend, and the whole rick-roll thing, it's just a laugh, not a reflection on Rick himself, or what people think of him. Practically any song video could have been used instead to make the joke, Rick was never the joke, the joke was people didn't get what they expected. Rick's a legend and that song is legendary. Gotta respect Rick for stepping out of the business to benefit his family life too.

So Noel thinking Liam had done it asked him , but Liam hadn't even seen it, so thinking it might be someone in the band or crew had done it, he spoke to Rick Astley about it ready to apologise ,, but actually found out Rick had wrote it on himself , Rick said it just stops someone else doing it. Rick Astley has probably gained more respect in the last few years than he ever had in the previous 30. I think this is all due to the internet. Today we can actually get to know that he is more than just a singer of some 90's backing tracks and he actually was/IS a real musician and not just aware of what a record company would want us to know about an artist. This interview is a great watch. Totally honest and funny. I loved how honest Rick is with his knowledge of music theory and he is under no illusion he doesn’t understand it but he knows when something doesn’t sound right.i am the same. I was taught guitar with no theory but understand what to play through technique that was taught to me by fellow musicians but all of my mates play by ear and can’t sight read. Total respect for his band as well. I had the pleasure of meeting Ricks bass player Jay at a pub in Wells, in May 2019 and had a great chat with him, and then watched him play with Rick and he is an unbelievable player. Justin has certainly had some amazing artists who are amazing and well respected and totally grounded in the music industry. Micheal Starr and Myles Kennedy to name a few, including Justin himself. Loved this interview. Great hearing all the ins and outs of then and now music. One question I would have loved to hear Rick's answer to; is if he has listened to any of Ren's work, and what he thinks about it? Having seen interviews with Ren around the album battle for the charts with Rick, and hearing how much respect Ren has for Rick,; I had hoped to hear Rick's thoughts on Ren's music. Never mind, next time..... Thanks for sharing this moment. Fabulous setting by the way.

I don’t know that I care that much for Rick Astley’s music as such but he’s such a good dude, total treasure.

This was just brilliant, like listening to two old friends having a catch up. Honestly could listen to you both all day - Rick and Justin are just great together, would love to see a part two (and a live music collaboration).

This interview was great! One of the things that stands out most for me is that, we get a particular impression of performers seeing them in videos and hear them play. But getting an opportunity like this, to actually hear a couple of musicians talk about performing, recording, and their craft in general, just helps you realize that they aren’t just the person who you see or hear in 3 or 5 minute bites in videos and recordings. There’s more there than just the performer.

I enjoyed this immensely. Rick was a huge part of my 80's childhood and easily one of the best S.A.W artists due to his amazing voice. I was in to bands like The Cult and Guns n Roses but could still appreciate his place in pop music at that time. Seeing him perform at Glastonbury blew my mind, what a professional, funny and talented man. I can't imagine working so hard on your career and feeling like everyone thinks your a twat. He, and The Darkness for that matter, never deserved that kind of hate or dismissal. Justin is a phenomenal song writer and musician as is Rick and this interview just solidifies that. Thanks for a brilliant interview, I would love to see you chat with other underrated / misunderstood artists please. Might I be as bold as to suggest The Proclaimers?

I hardly ever comment on You Tube but this is one of the most refreshing, intelligent, funny and entertaining interviews ever. I used to work as a music producer for radio and remember the Stock/Aitken/Waterman time very well and I can't say I ever liked their stuff, although their productions were of course extremely well executed. However, I always thought that Rick Astley had a good voice and was an excellent singer but never followed his career. I heard of his Smiths Glastonbury gig and found it suprising and brilliant. To "meet" him here on your channel was great. He is the real deal and I wish him happiness and success, whatever that means, for everything his doing. And it's great how relaxed and open Justin is as interviewer. Thank you! Justin: you're doing the Rides Again shows in the UK. Are there any plans to do something on the continent, Switzerland for example...

Totally refreshing interview , totally normal genuine guy. So many of today's popstars and celebrities detach themselves from the real world and think they are gods , surrounding themselves with needless security and hype. Many could learn a lot from this man and his normality. Footnote , he can literally sing anything !!
