We were taught about the horrors of slavery, complete with visual depictions of slave auctions, slaves being lashed across the back because they got caught trying to learn how to read, etc. I mean, they really held nothing back where I went to school. And then you get to where people are telling you, “Oh, you didn’t really learn about slavery.” No, I really did. It was horrifying. These illustrations went into very graphical detail; they weren’t something a kid would soon forget, nor should they be.

Kamau is the fuckin best .... been watching him since his show started. And yo Pat, I have two suggestions for future Stinkers: Anything Linkin Park or Three Days Grace -- both bands that took everything great about the early 90s and reduced it to an active rock radio formula, void of any edge. I once heard Linkin Park referred to as a rollercoaster -- because much like a rollercoaster they seem rebellious and appear dangerous when in fact it's perfectly safe for family fun as long as you're over the height of 48 inches. Linkin Park is a rollercoaster.
@nathanaellazaro33472 жыл бұрын
I feel like your portrayal of Linkin Park is pretty misleading and possibly disingenuous. Regardless of your thoughts on their later albums, their first two albums, particularly their debut Hybrid Theory, are regarded as some the best to come out from that era. Tthose two albums still dealt with dark themes like depression and abuse even if they weren't quite as dark as some of the nu metal bands before them (ex: Korn, Slipknot) and this actuallly helped them be more relatable to wider audiences both back then and now. You also ignore how they were probably some of the best at implementing elements of hip hop with rock at that time (If this is considered a negative to you then there is a whole other issue that needs to be addressed). If you wanted to single out a similar group that did pander to the rock radio format it would be much better to go after a group like Limp Bizkit who are pretty bad (even if it can be in a funny way sometimes).
@MIKEPORTOGHESE2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanaellazaro3347 This is all my opinion. but it's definitely not disingenuous. Discussing this is probably futile, but hear me out on my tale of LP and me. The first time I heard LP was "in the end" and I shriveled into the backseat of the car I was riding in. I couldn't believe it was real and that the Jersey-Shore-type bro' who put it on thought it was -- heavy ... I thought (and still think) it was one of the worst songs I'd ever heard, it's JUST. SO. CORNY. The cliche melody, produced like a Backstreet Boys song, the rapping? holy shit .. THE RAPPING???? IT'S SOOOOOOOOOOOO CORNY, it reminded me of a say-no-to-drugs PSA kinda rap. And then the teenager's journal lyrics "I tried soo harddddddddd". holy shit .... it's just .. soo ...sooo .... CHEESY. Like a parody of everything I loved from early 90s rock. The song makes me blush from how embarrassingly Nickelodeon it is. But sure enough as LP grew in popularity I felt like I was being gas-lit by people falling for their obvious shtick. And one by one, every subsequent LP song WAS THE SAME SONG. I remember a guy taking the waveforms of all their hits and overlaying them -- THE SAME SONG. But was I the crazy one for noticing this? It was very similar to 2015 when Trump started running and I thought, "clearly we ALL can see he's a shystie con-man lunatic scumbag right? ..... right????????" and one by one people would turn and say with a straight face that he was the champion of the working class -- which lead to many pillows being screamed into. As for LP -- to me they are NO different than the Bizkit, other than their fans consider them to be a "legit cred band", where as the Biz' (much like Nickelback) are commonly understood to be dumb and fun -- don't take it too seriously. This is really my problem with Linkin Park, they're a pop band. Formulaic radio-fodder, posing as edgy. Look, I'm 42 years old and my bullshit radar was at DEFCON 1 after the drudge through the late 90s/early 00s. Possibly the worst time in popular Rock music when it actually was a thing. You know who else was "relatable to a wider audience" ? Imagine Dragons, Crazy Town, Staind, Puddle of Mud, Creed, etc... does popularity redeem any of their musical atrocities? FUCK no. So if you're really gonna suggest my disdain for LP is actually rooted in an aversion to hiphop, that's nonsense. illmatic, Midnight Marauders and 36 Chambers are in my top 10 along with Revolver, Zeppelin IV and OK Computer. I would argue that it's my love for great hiphop that makes me hate LP so much. As Mr Finnerty would say, it's my musical conscience that prevents me from falling for this middle of the road drivel, and as i know the only band to ever do the fusion of rock/rap well was Rage Against the Machine. Comparing them to LP is like Iggy and the Stooges to Donnie and Marie karaoke. Obv I wont change your mind one bit, and if you were a child when LP was all the rage then nothing I say can make you un-like them, the same as nothing can stop me from enjoying Ice Ice Baby or Prisencolinensinainciusol, despite growing some musical taste as I hit puberty. The thing is, I don't try and justify Vanilla Ice's place in music. I know he was top40 shit.... just.... like..... Linkin..... Park. xo

When I hear about what people didn't learn about slavery in school I'm shocked. I grew up in Southern Illinois in a town of 500. My 8th grade social studies teacher touched on most of what these guys talked about. Side note, that teacher never told us what political party he belonged to and who he voted for. I remember when he was asked he went into great detail about why we vote in privates booths. Best teacher I ever had.

Interesting that people listened to Pat say that people were leaping onto buzz phrases they’ve been taught to hate without understanding them, and then decided to go in the comments to say they turned off the video because they mentioned CRT.

So funny, I remember this time in music when whistling was in every big song. A car rolled up blasting pumped up kicks and I yelled, “YAY WHISTLING!!!” at the driver. They probably thought I was about to perpetrate some sorta of road ragey hate crime but “YAY WHISTLING!!” pops into my head when I hear one of these songs to this day. 😇🤣

Describing someone as having "moves like Jagger" would be a cool phrase to include in one line of a song verse, but Jesus, don't make it the entire chorus. I imagine that Adam Levine kept a notebook of cool lyric ideas, and one day he wrote that phrase in there. Then when it came time to make the next album, he realized that that was the only idea he had, and the rest is history.

i love the chat towards the end about being "that guy" who does things for the house, like basic plumbing and whatnot. i'm a girl living in a house with 2 other women and i am the designated "can you handle this or should we call a guy" person. if i can't solve the problem, leaky pipe or broken blinds, then i say "yah let's call some guy" LOL. very relatable, never seen anyone touch on this being "man of the house" deal which hit close to home, love y'all. and yes i am very proud that i do fare very well in problem solving, building furniture, moving furniture and fixing a crappy wifi connection makes me feel amazing, love being our "man of the house" as an early 20's woman :D we're all in the same boat!!

I had to look it up. Moves Like Jagger wasn't even written by Maroon 5. It was written by a collection of producer/writers with additional writing by Levine.

What annoys _me_ the most about Maroon 5 songs is Levine's blatantly obviously auto-tuned vocals 😏 And this was a very enjoyable podcast, also beyond the actual 'WMTSS' topic; Thank you both! 😀 ...and Adam of course, too! 😉

There is a funny thing about "redlining" in that black owned banks at the time turned down black applicants at a much higher rate than white owned banks and white owned banks approved more Asian applicants than white ones while turning down many white applicants as well as blacks because mortgage lending has never been about race and has always been about credit score.

Great episode, so happy that you dudes are friends and that he is a fan. I am more ashamed I just learned what ‘red lining’ means, than I am to learn you have a podcast. I have done some work, yet obviously to me now...not enough. I am going to go and rate your show 5 stars and thank you both for your talent and humour. Always enjoy your KZbin videos and hey congrats on stepping up your pro game! I think you should keep the dunkin cups mobile as your b ground though...help keep us all humble. ❤🤘🏽🧢🥤🎸

If you were redlined you also couldn't get a prime loan. That meant contending with predatory lending practices. One missed payment and they take the house, things like that. That's why black activism got into community banking in order to have an avenue for black borrowers to be able to get mortgages at more fair terms.

i once saw a coverband soundchecking at a hotel, they grooved hard and i asked them if we could do a jam or so. at the end of their set they pulled me up and told me the songs they would play. i thought we would jam and couldn't play any of these and then they said Moves like jagger. i couldn't play that either and i also think that this song sinks hard. the guitarist was like: "it's only B and E let's gooo" it was actually fun playing this song

(We are paying a plumber thousands of dollars, right now.) My sister married an HVAC guy. He hooked us up with a free central A/C, almost ten years ago. Make friends with the toilet guy. That A/C died a few years ago. My sister had divorced the HVAC guy. We had to pay thousands of dollars to replace the system. Make friends with the toilet guy.
