Someone that i grew up with was sentenced to 2-4 years for doing a hit & run, while driving drunk, resulting in the death of a man. He also tampered with evidence, hiding & cleaning/dissembling his car for weeks until he finally turned himself in. This was a few years ago. He ended up serving a year & some change. He’s out now. I find that to be mind blowing. Smh. I understand you are trying to get information and that is the best way to do so is by being direct with close ended questions but come on you could of at least comforted her. I guess that is there way of coping with the situation learned from previous experiences so I cannot blame them but that is some cold callous shit, and this is why you end up with situations like 22:00; unable to defuse the situation because you lack the empathy to understand the other person perspective as you are blocking everything out to prevent yourself from being traumatized and having empathy would form a connection to the current reality. . Good job on that officer on being proactive and parking behind that semi instead of trying to argue with someone who just received some of the most terrible news they will hear in life because at that point he is not going to be rational, so you have to make with what you have instead of making the situation worse. Anyway, I'm done with my rand TLDR; Public servants have difficult jobs that make them assholes.

Shock can really screw up your mind. My Little Sister passed away unexpectedly when she was 9 and I had just turned 12. That was 50 years ago. To this day, I don't remember my parents telling us she was dead. About 15 years ago, I was able to to visit her grave. I just remember standing there and seeing her name on the headstone and went into shock all over again. Hours just disappeared. I don't remember much of that day either. Then my Brother died a tragic death in 2022. I went to his funeral. I moved into his house. On the first anniversary of his death, it finally settled in that he wasn't coming home. All of his stuff is still where he left it. I can't bring myself to pack it up, much less give it away or donate it. I'm lost.

I used to be a police officer for 13 years. One of the hardest moments of my life was when I told a spouse that her husband was dead after he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree. That was 8 years ago and I still will never forget her face or reaction. It's not easy being a police officer. Thank you to those who continue to protect and serve.

Not so, his license is suspended for 5 years once he gets out, and he's under supervision when he gets out for almost 5 years, but he got 8 years in prison. Involuntary manslaughter normally is up to a 4 year sentence, often much less. He got over double. If we're unhappy with crime punishments, we need to vote in people who are tougher on criminals.

About 100% of these commenters are completely insane thinking it's okay to just run out in front of fast moving traffic. They think the driver is 100% responsible. I have deep concerns for where this world is going if that's what people think. Everybody knows you don't run out in front of traffic at night especially. Thank you for the dialogue at the end. As a retired nurse first responders deal with their professional feelings and our human feelings in every situation. This can take a toll on mental wellness. I appreciate seeking out counseling and good support system with family and friends. After 37 yrs of service there are still memories that never truly fade or forgotten but faith got me through it. I have three times in my life when I have received news of the death family. My mother in 1981-expected after a long illness, my father in 1983-sudden death, and my sister and only sibling, in 2012, also a sudden death. Because they all lived in different states, I got the news over the phone. Each time, it was straight forward with no chitchat. Just wham! Knowing how it feels to receive that news, I can’t imagine having to give that news to anyone. That must be one of the hardest parts of the job for law enforcement and/or medical professionals. How do you maintain an emotional distance to preserve your own mental health without sounding cold and unfeeling? By the time you 77 like I am, you have lost many loved ones. Many friends. That never gets easier.

As far as they know, this is just some guy who rolled up and started screaming. They handled it as best as they could by asking him nicely to move his truck and talk with the family members on scene. His frustration is understandable and justified, but procedures still need to be followed.

My brother was killed exactly this way. Driver supposedly never touched their brakes. A detective in Chicago Heights working diligently ended up finding the person. Two weeks of work all stunning from just a few pieces of a broken headlight, no video and one witness account that was heading in the opposite direction. It was amazing that they were able to put it all together and not give up.

As a former officer, you just witnessed the most difficult part of the job in my opinion. There’s nothing worse than giving a death notification. It’s truly devastating to everyone there. When you have to catch a Father collapsing after learning of his daughter’s death just a few feet away, you are never the same. Still hurts to this day and it’s been 20 years. Cops carry those scars unfortunately.

It was manslaughter not calculated murder My cousin was killed by a drunk driver but that night he didn't decided to go out and murder her. His bad choices led to her death and she was crossing at night. Pedestrian's take lots of risk crossing roads. You need to a really quick risk assessment and not be in a hurry. I live in a regional town in Australia which has particular roads where they are hazards to drivers. People walk into the roads walk across traffic lights etc with no regard. Bike people do whatever. You need to be aware going at the speed limit you need to drive below the speed limit! I lived in an Australian city and had no issues with people but in coastal country Australia where I am its terrible.

It was an accident, he had no intention to kill anybody. They should not be crossing there, it was not a pedestrian crossing. Drivers would not be expecting people to be in the road. He was not even speeding, it was just dark and he saw them too late. Yes he panicked and drove off in an act of self preservation and maybe shock, but he's been punished for that. I don't think his life should be destroyed because of an accident. If he just stopped and waited for police he would have not even been charged with anything.

I was hit by a drunk driver. I was stopped at a red light and she slammed into me from the back going about 60mph. As a result of that accident I needed 17 surgeries!! Within hours of the accident I became partially paralyzed on my right side!! That resulted in an emergency surgery and then the rest of the surgeries came after that. Please everyone do not drink and drive. There are so many ways to get home without getting behind the wheel of your car!!

My best friend was one of those 6324 killed in 2019. She was on the way home from dinner with her two daughters, ages 12 & 14, and saw a man crossing the street in a wheel chair carrying groceries. She pulled over to help him across and they were both hit by a 20 year old who failed to stop. Both of her girls witnessed the accident and ran out in the street. Thankfully a passersby stopped and got the girls out of the street. The driver returned to the scene more than 30 mins later, after both victims had died. She was charged with a hit and run but was found not guilty because she eventually returned to the scene even though she drove off and left both victims to die in the street. Unbelievable! Watching this was very traumatic for me but I appreciate this video so much. The public needs to be aware.

I think the public is for the most part aware that hit and runs are part of reality. Hit and runs are illegal in all states, but the parameters can be slightly different depending on your state laws. As far as I understand it does not matter if you return to the scene after 1 minute or after 24 hours or after a year, if you flee the scene you are guilty of the crime of hit and run. It is very strange the perpetrator was charged, but then found not guilty due to returning to the scene. It sounds like the person did in fact meet the criteria for hit and run, but perhaps the jury went against their oath and nullified? Typically the jury is given instructions and takes an oath to remain impartial, but that's the problem with jury of peers is this does not always happen as it should. It is quite rare though especially with random hit and run killers. That is really weird.

I just wanted to say thank you for your follow up questions and thoughts and also including the perspective of another professional in the field. As an ER nurse watching how the grandfather was treated broke my heart. I so hope this video is used as part of their training and how they could have handled this tragic moment in a more humane way. In Germany we wouldn't have sent her off to work. There would've at least been someone from EMS that would've checked on her and she definitely would not have been sent to work. We have so called "Notfallseelsorger" which are basically pastors that take care of traumatized family members witnesses and emergency services personell. She definitely seemed like she needed a chaplain to talk to.

He was coherent and wanted to use my phone to call his wife. He did and the medics arrived and took over. Thank you for including John and Harrison at the end. I was a medic for several years, and I felt the same way when being a call like this. Your brain goes a million miles an hour thinking of all the things you will need to do to try and save this person's life. I've been out of the field for over 30 years, so many protocols have changed and improved since my day. Too bad this young lady wasn't able to be helped.

The grandfather who parked his truck probably heard it over CB. That man literally said "fuck work" and drive the delivery out. I feel for that man. I get why the officers were strict. Luckily they had compassion for the situation.

I've been where that father was, recieving that information about the love of my life, that he passed away in a horrific accident, at the young age of 40 - him and our beautiful Pyrenees, Polar. My family, gone in a moment, and the moment you recieve that kindof information - your entire world collapses, and you drown in your own tears. May God bless her soul, rest in peace. I hope the family finds some healing.

I was in EMS for over 30 years....and will never forget the bad calls. It is very hard being the first responder and trying to do your best and have the same outcome as this young lady. And to explain to the parents and grandparents that you did your best just is not enough for the family at the time.

The really bad ones, the ones where you do everything and still can't save them, they stay with you forever. And yeah, nothing you did matters to the family who just lost that person, only what you didn't do.

I’m not a 1st responder, but my partner went into cardiac arrest 1 night and I performed CPR for over 15 minutes until 1st responders arrived. He went in the ambulance, and someone drove me to the hospital because I was in shock and they didn’t want me driving. They then wouldn’t let me see him, and stuck me in a room with a grief counsellor. I truly thought he was gone. I will never forget the hysterical phone call I made to his mother, in the middle of the night, from that room. I was apologising and telling her I did all I could, and all I could think was ‘what if it was 1 of MY sons?’ In the end, according to the Dr thanks to my competent CPR (I had coincidentally taken a 1st aid course less than a week earlier), he made a full recovery. But I’ll never forget that awful night

In high school, a girl walking home was struck and killed just a block or so down from the loading. All of us waiting heard the tires and horn. The corner got blocked off, so the school buses had to go around to get to us. We could all hear her mom screaming while we waited. I'd read in books lines about "wailing in despair," and I understood the concept. But I finally heard what it sounded like. It was a very quiet ride to our stops

I was teaching one day and the classroom I was in was right near the road, it was nearing home time and parents were coming to collect their kids. One of the kids' grandparents was crossing the road and I heard the impact when a car hit her. It's a sound that I will never forget. She did live, but was injured at the hip level pretty bad and died sooner than she should have after that. My witness was only a sound, but it was enough that 30 years later, I still remember it clearly.

When I clicked on this video I had no idea how much it would affect me... I was Bawling and I am not one to cry easily... My heart breaks for this young lady losing her life so carelessly... She was 20 yrs young and had her whole life ahead of her...😥😥😥 My heart and prayers go out to this young ladies family... I felt their pain, suffering, and sadness and I want them to know that I feel the same❤ I wanted to say also that I am so proud of Our Police officers paramedic's and fireman.Without them coming in and taking control of the situation and shutting down lanes this could have been so much worse... Their Integrity and their huge hearts will not escape me.. It takes a special kind of Soul to do their jobs and see all that they do... Also, thank you too the Nurses that tried to render help to this young lady and to All of the other witnesses coming forth and giving the descriptions of the car and details of what happened... You All are heroes in my eyes and GOD BLESSS YOU ALL FOR YOUR COMPASSION 🙏❤️🙏

Watching this father who is related to the victim be told that his daughter is dead is heartbreaking. When I’ve had to tell parents that their child was dead was one of the hardest things I had to do as a medic. When a 3 year old was accidentally run over by his dad when he was backing his truck up was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. After he hit him he was alive until I intubated him and he coded. We never got him back. The dad’s bumper hit him in the shoulder knocking him down and the tire ran over his head and he was brain dead and that’s why he ultimately coded. He was the 2nd to youngest person I’ve done CPR on. When we got to the home where the child was hit his dad was cradling his son in his arms and at the hospital 2 nurses walked him to the room to see his dead 3 year old son. In the end he was able to donate his eyes. Watching this man mourn the loss of his daughter after finding out she died is horrible.

Whoa. When my dad was three years old, his father accidentally backed the car over him too. Obviously, he survived after surgery and healing time. My sweet dad went on to live such a loving, positive life, own a successful business, had us kids, and went to God peacefully a few years back. As a grown Daddy’s girl, I miss him so very much that the tears flow even now. It’s heartbreaking to hear that another toddler in a similar situation didn’t make it, and won’t enjoy the chance to grow up. I suppose it comes down to the position of the child under the car. Although an accident, the guilt his father felt must’ve been tremendous. So very heartbreaking. Thank you for being a medic. ❤️‍🩹

I personally know a family that happened to. Dad worked at a cable company and while backing up his work truck he accidentally hit his 3yr old daughter. It was tragic. I can't imagine.
