🕊Thanks to many people smarter than me, we've patched up a few of the language "plotholes" I mentioned already! ⤵ 🐒The 'ape' & 'monkey' debacle is purely a translation issue with both the sub and dub. In Japanese 'saru' is interchangeable for those. (aka I should learn Japanese). Also apparently Connie uses language to imply that he is repeating something he isn't entirely sure of himself - so there's also some meaning lost in translation with that too. 🌊Ditto for 'sea' and 'ocean'. In Japanese 'umi' can be used interchangeably, and as with many things in Japanese, the meaning is drawn from context (aka I should learn Japanese) tl;dr - there is no plot hole, only a mistranslation. Many thanks to everyone who pointed this out! 🙇‍♂

Connie says ”あの猿とかってやつ” or "ano saru tokatte yatsu" which is implying he doesn't know the word, but is repeating what someone else called it. It'd be loosely translated to something like "that monkey or something" because he's not quite sure what a monkey is.

In the manga, when Eren or Connie mentions the word Saru, it is written with Hiragana, like a kid who does not know the actual word in kanji would write it (it's kind of the equivalent in English of writing something by ear, you don't know the correct way to write it so you just write what it sounds like)

Wouldn’t be possible because to have full access to the founding titan you need to get into contact with a *titan* of royal blood. That’s why eren was able to activate the founding titan when he punched Dina’s Titan at the end of season 2 but couldn’t activate it when Rod and Historia touched him in the crystal catacombs

In season 1 Hange says, Eren cannot use his abilities unless he has a goal and intent. So random touching probably works the same way.

Attack on Titan has so much detail, that even the official games had a bunch of foreshadowing. There is a gift in the second game, I think it's called the "strange" or "rare" fossil, and this fossil is of the hallucigenia that is responsible for all titans. You can get it from the gift shop in the ruins of Utgard.

That game is awesome. Still play it a ton. It's one you can play while listening to a podcast or something, but it's also one worth putting full attention into because of how hard it can be.

So, I avoided all AOT content for the entire decade of watching the anime. A week after it ended, having enough time to mull over and interpret the story with my own perspective, I finally started watching videos about it. This is by far my favorite series on KZbin right now. I've been rewatching these episodes over and over, meditating on the experience. Thank you Koroto for making these ❤

9:56 the title "smoke signals" is a chapter in the manga, where the beginning of the uprising arc includes more story elements left out of the anime. the smoke signals emerging from erens multiple transformations are essentially leading the MP's to the scouts location (side note: in one of the experiments erens titan tries to build a house out if logs)

Im not a native speaker but from what I've seen, 'saru' (猿/サル) is usually always translated as monkey but it can also mean ape. I think technically it can mean any non-human primate. Side note- I always liked the name 'monkey trouble'. Which is what the fan base called him before we knew anything about the Beast titan/Zeke, lol

Also, when it comes to Historia, it's important to note that they don't know that she's a royal yet. As far as any of them (including Historia) knows, she's an illegitimate child of a noble who is important for some reason. They don't know exactly why the wall church and government are trying to hide her identity.

Yes!!! Overanalyzing Attack on Titan is back!!! I'm so excited for this season, seeing as it's probably my favorite. Thank you as always for the hard work!! Also, one thing I find really interesting about Kenny's introduction- his alias of Kenny the ripper. Which I would assume is very obviously a reference to Jack the ripper who was also a serial killer (kind of like how the captured titans from season 1 were also named after serial killers). But like, Jack the ripper was specifically known for killing women who worked as prostitutes in the slums. And Kenny literally had a sister who worked as a prostitute in the slums (the underground). And of course we know that's not the kind of people Kenny kills - instead he's known for serial killings of the MPs. Not entirely sure if that's a sound interpretation, but it strikes me as a kind of inversion from who Kenny is based on. Instead of killing prostitutes in the slums, he kills people who are well off and live in relative safety in the interior wall.

For any Aot fan who hasn't read the manga, please do! While the manga and anime for Aot are overall pretty similar there are still quit a lot of differences between the two. Some of which are imo pretty important. One of the biggest ones being Mikasa's character, she is very different in the manga. A lot of Mikasa's important lines and development were cut from the manga, she is imo so much more fleshed out and complex in the manga compared to the anime imo. I personally never really liked her character in the anime but after reading the manga I absolutely love her. This alone makes the manga worth reading, seeing her development in the manga also helps her conclusion make more sense. The uprising arc is also very different in the manga compared to the anime. Personally I like the uprising arc in the manga a lot more, in big part due to some important character moments for Levi, Mikasa and Historia that were cut from the anime. If you enjoy the Aot anime I would definitely recommend reading the manga as well, there are so many good bits you'll miss out on if you are an anime only, if you can look pass the somewhat rough art style in some of the earlier chapters it's fantastic! Also thank you for these videos Koroto, they help me cope with the fact that Aot is actually over, keep up the good work!

I know you said you work in advance, but it still doesn't change how insane it is you can keep this going despite the personal things you have going on. Thank you for all your effort, work, and dedication to this (though I know you'd do it even if you had 1 viewer total for every video; but you have us and we appreciate you sharing this glorius work with us). I've gone through close loss as well relatively recently and hope you're holding up okay. Here for you if you need. Also wanted to note that I've noticed the significant decrease in the mis/over-use of "literally", so really thankful for that. Whether it was just incidental, through direct feedback from myself, or from general feedback from everyone, it makes my only minor gripe with your series completely vanish. So I just wanted to share gratitude for that. Last, gotta say I LOVED the cut-aways in last episode, specifically: Ymir's letter to Historia (me and my SO call them chicky nuggies too LOL), and your GRRM meme (which is maybe a HUGE foreshadowing for a future series once you wrap up your soon(ish)-ending AOT/TWD series and your workload lightens a bit (not sure about the other series)???). I would DIE of happiness if you started into ASOIAF. You're already GOAT'd in my books with your multi-layered, empathetic, following-down-every-single-thread-possible approach mixed with S-Tier memes - and applying that to more of my favorite fiction would be insane. I would not be able to resist watching every single second, despite my brain telling me to manage my time on YT. Thank you for reading and have a nice day! Keep on keeping on :)

dude the translation discrepancy between the dub and sub is such an interesting topic! It's something that doesn't get talked about or noticed because it flies by people's radar, but from time to time there's subtle differences that sometimes surprisingly has large implications, like disproving certain theories while giving credence to others, depending on what translation you prefer. It's something consistent across all all anime, not just AOT. I've noticed it sometimes wit One Piece, it would be a good video idea to explore honestly. I wish i could remember off the top of my head some examples, but my head empty

Germanic languages have kept the word 'ape' in their registries for millennia without encountering apes in their daily lives, so it's not too far off for a nation to keep using the word after being cut off from the world for just one century in my opinion

Re: the "how did Historia and Eren not touch?" 1) It's worth noting that Eren didn't get the memories when he touched Historia, he got them a good 2 seconds later when he kissed her hand 2) It's very much implied that Rod taught Historia something about unlocking memories through touch. While there's a reasonable question about the moment when Historia touches Eren in the crystal chamber (to which your explanation works), the point is that I think this is far more important to separating everything that came before the crystal chamber and everything that came after.

While there are some differences the anime made when adapting the manga in each season, the first quarter of season 3 is the most different between the two mediums. While I can understand trimming and rearranging some of the material to streamline the story for a visual medium, I can’t help but feel the loss of some character moments that brought an emotional human core to the story, such has Historia’s emotional breakdown over Ymir staying with Reiner and Bertholdt or Dimo Reeves’s impact on the conflict itself.

25:42 not sure if you included the phrase "guiding star" because it's in the dub (I've only watched the sub) or if it was just a personal writing choice, but I love the use of those words here because of Call of Silence. the last lines of that song compare the subject to a rising star, guiding their people home. I always saw it as Ymir's perspective, reminding Historia to live her life on her terms, but also telling her that she has a bright future ahead of her. anyway, I just love the inclusion of that phrase when describing the beginning of Historia's arc here. amazing video as always!! edit: thought about this more as the episode went on, and since this is overanalyzing, figured I'd add it here lol. the last verse of Call of Silence is: _So cry no more, oh my beloved_ _Go ahead be proud, and fight it out_ _You are the one, a rising star_ _You guide us far, to home, yet girt_ and wow, this just has Ymir speaking to Historia written all over it. also, I feel like this is heavy-handedly referring to Historia as the one who would lead the Eldians within the walls out of the dark and into the light of the truth. I think the whole song can be viewed as Ymir's perspective, then Historia's, then back to Ymir's. truly just a beautifully tragic piece of music for two beautifully tragic characters. (also I'm obviously not the first person to draw some of these conclusions, but I wanted to add them to the discussion for this video)

I see seasons 1-3 now as the prelude into the actual conflict. Which imo it does so perfectly. Like we build up all these characters, then the pay off is seeing the motivations and who they are after all that's happened. I love all of the seasons but the end of season 3 into season 4 is something else and I love it.

This fact in particular is why I love the opening My War. Every opening is great, but My War is the first time the actual conflict of the show is made plain, and as such is uniquely bleakly militaristic as opposed to patriotically militaristic.
