Have you ever watched a man trip over his own pants?
Not cool.
Pants too long that result in pools of fabric bunching over your shoes makes you look sloppy.
On the other hand - cropping your pants too short makes you look like a school boy wearing capris.
Paying attention to where your trousers breaks is the difference between an outfit that sings and one that looks like borrowed clothing.
The break of a trouser refers to the point where your pants touch your shoe.
What makes it so important to your overall outfit...

Real Men Real Style I guess my "no break" is not too bad, when I sit down it shows a tiny bit of socks, which I don't mind since I wear the same coloured socks as my trousers.

I made that mistake of no break and with no taper on the bottom. I looked like a clown in a suit. Luckily there was enough material to re-hemm to a half break.

I feel a full break especially in slacks helps me balance out my proportions. While I am not especially tall, I have long legs as well as big glutes and quads, so the break around the ankles adds some balance.

Great information. I notice with off the rack trousers, where one buys by waist & length size, one has to be careful of the rise. Different manufacturers place the trouser crotch at different lengths from the waistband. Since trouser length is measured from the crotch, it can make a huge difference. One pair of pants may fit perfectly while another in the same size will be too short or too long. You have to try them on with the same sort of shoes you will be wearing them with!

I'm glad when trousers fit. Fit the waist and long enough to reach the shoes. That's probably 3 weekends spent on shopping. Then I'm done. Online shopping is just the same. L, XL, XXL, 3XL, whatever, nobody bothers to SPECIFY any size. Only when it comes to money they specify the cents, and don't accept a medium amount for medium quality. Shopping is a nightmare. So I usually spend my spare time in the woods with some wellis.

I detest full break. Looks sloppy, on everyone. I just got a new suit, wanted no break but the pant taper is a bit too subtle for it to work. Plus, I'm 6'1" and, as Antonio noted, it doesn't work in my favor. So, got em adjusted and I think they're now a subtle quarter break. Which is okay. However, I may go have the taper increased and the hem brought up because I don't like how quarter break can at one moment look clean and streamlined (ideal) and the next, depending on how the pant hits the top of the shoes, look like bell bottoms.

Antonio, First off, thanks for all of the great content and for presenting things in a systematic and understandable manner. I have a question about pant length when wearing dressy boots. Is it ever acceptable to hem your pants with less than no break without committing a style faux pas? What I’m curious about is styling a pair of Allen Edmonds Dalton’s with some nice flannel trousers perhaps with a Navy pea coat and a sweater. With this ensemble (or similar examples), can it be considered permissible to have the pants hemmed a bit less than no break to show off the boots a bit more? I think that I know the answer to this question (which is to say that less than no break is not advisable), but wanted to get your opinion. Best, Bernard

Hello Antonio! I've come to follow your channel relatively recently and love it. So much great info, thanks for sharing. I understand how to talk about break, and realize I like the look of a no break that grazes the shoe. What I don't understand how to talk about is taper. I have 3 or 4 pairs of khakis and couple other trousers that were bought before I started really paying serious attention to fit. They are much too baggy through the legs and swallow my shoes. I want to get them tailored, but I've never been to a tailor before. How can I communicate with this tailor to define how I want the pants to taper? Are there any specific terms (like break for length) that I should know?

full break is just awfull imo, italian style, half or no break way more elegant, although depends of the model of the pantalon and fabric. Buy your stuff at a good place and tailor them always really

It's a matter of tastes, to my tastes Italian style looks simply nerdy and half break looks more professional. It's really a matter of preferences, and most important is to be happy with what we wear.

I'm short guy but this new trend with no break don't work. I think the best classy and fashion is half break. For people who want be more modern i recomended slightly break but no this ridiciolous no break.

hey antonio, I've read the article as well as the info graphics seen in the link below: www.realmenrealstyle.com/visual-suit-fit-guide/ I think the graphics are a bit exaggerated for the pants. Can you go into more detail with actual pics so i can really see what's happening? I bought a suit recently, the jacket fits prefectly. I had a blazer altered last year and that fit perfectly. I got this and the jacket fits the same way. When i bought the suit and tried on the pants, I was a bit dehydrated from being out in the cold and when i tried on the pants, it was ok. When i got home, a little later in the day, it really hugs by butt. I sent it to a tailor to let out the but area and the crotch a bit so things will sit better. I just don't want to look like im about to squeeze out of the pants whenever i sit. Also, I go to the gym every week and i do legs. squats, leg extensions, calf press, etc (regarding legs). The thighs are really snug. I can pinch fabric, but very little. I'm hoping that this will fix everything. Also, it's tapered, And the tailor recommended a half break. I'm not used to wearing snug clothing, so when i got the blazer altered, I was a bit hesitant that it might be too tight, but after wearing it for a year, i love it. I'm really not too sure about the pants. My waist is a 31, but i buy a 32 waist in jeans and dress slacks to get the thighs wider. the Suit is a 38R, which means a 32 waist, so im hoping everything is good. I wear a 32x30 levi's 569 LOOSE jeans and that's all that can fit me. Those jeans are the baggiest levi's that I can find, so me in a tapered pants makes me feel like a pirate with a wooden leg. Also, the pants is really close to my hamstrings. The tailor advised that loosing the butt area will free up that space. also, when i sit, it will free up the seat a little and the crotch being let out will free up the thighs a bit. Thoughts??? Also, an illustration with real people would be best for me :) :P

+link3rd Just a few fyi's... This is my first suit. I'm just really experimenting with fashion. I don't really have that many good clothes. Maybe a few polos, some work shirts, some casual shirts and ONE blazer. I view your videos ALOT!!! they really help me make up my mind on the blazer. thank you. I just really want a suit for like interviews, weddings (if i'm ever invited to one) some kind of "formal event" where business attire is recommended, a work party, etc. I ended up getting a navy, lol. The charcoal really made me look pale and old. Black was too formal like you said. Also, I've been using my dad's suit for interviews. It's a 42R, 3 button, center vent, so it's clearly not mine. I really look forward to your reply. Thanks again!

I see a lot of 20-30 year old men here in NYC wearing the no break style with very slim fitting suits. (Think Rue Paul when he is dressed as a man) A lot of the realtors that are showing apartments in my building are coming dressed like this and they are wearing no socks and wing tips. You really have to have the perfect body to pull that type of look off. I Would hate to be in the room when he takes off those leather shoes after wearing no socks! Phew!!! You are right about us ladies knowing how to rock the perfect hem line. I have pants I can only wear with my 5 inch stilettos. If I tried to wear them with any lower shoes I would be walking off about a yard of fabric! LOL!

+Blanca W The no break thing kinda just comes with slim fit trousers, if there is enough fabric to actually form a break they still can't because the trouser openings aren't large enough to actually fit over the shoe. I really want this slim fit trend to end, as you said very few people can actually pull it off. It started about a decade ago, surely it must be getting close to finishing now!

Full breaks aren't classic. In the 1930's, the era of classic clothing, men would never wear trousers with breaks.
