I'm 76 and I've been doing a 36-hour fast in the mountains every 2 to 3 weeks for the last 4 years. Physically I do everything I did in my 20's and I've noticed I have more stamina and agility than people in their 50's (which I've noticed e.g.playing singles tennis or climbing mountains).

@@rokanza2293 I agree genes will play some part, but what makes me think environment and way of life probably play a significant role is that one of my 3 brothers (of similar age) has a similar life-style (including regular fasting) to me and amazes people with his agility and stamina, whereas my other two brothers (with poor diet and no fasting) have fared less well (one started to become decrepit in his late 50's, the other started suffering from osteoporosis and reduced mobility in his 70's). For me the findings of scientists like Sinclair and Longo give it additional plausibility.

@@michaelbraithwaite5875 Interesting. I am 21 years old, would you say I am too young still to go on this fasting regimen since I can probably grow muscularly and perhaps in height more with relatively large amounts of good food ,calories? @@rokanza2293 I don't think my fasting regimen would inhibit the development of muscles through weight training. Apparently the day after a fast is the best time to do weight training, which I do to avoid the loss of bone mass (which one of my brothers suffers from)

@littleo353
@littleo353 Жыл бұрын
I have experimented routinely with all aspects of fasting for the past five years. Five years ago I had serious issues and had multiple doctors telling me I needed heart surgery and knee surgery. I declined both. Obviously multi-day fasting is great for forming the basis of healing. As Dr. Sinclair said it takes about 3 days of fasting for autophagy to fully kick in. Also note that on that third day there are "massive amounts of stem cells" produced (Dr. Satchin Panda is the source of that info). So as the body is cleaning up stuff it doesn't need, it also produces new cells. I experienced such fasts a number of times. HOWEVER most important, from my experiential vantage point, is my rule #1 now - "NEVER EVER EAT AFTER SUNDOWN." Doing so causes massive inflammation no matter what you have eaten. Dr. Panda speaks of this. That as the sun is setting melatonin is being increased for sleep. The increased melatonin is recognized and the pancreas doesn't release insulin - the nutrient manager. So nutrients in the blood stream cannot be distributed and assimilated throughout the body because there is no insulin to manage that. Thus, you end up with inflammation. So whoever created us made us to eat during the day and that, according to my voluminous reading, is what all cultures did. For example, Roman people in the 1st century AD were reported by a historian then to eat one meal a day around noon. An order of monks ate one meal closer to 3PM. Dr. Sathin Panda was asked by another scientist, Dr. Rhonda Patrick which was better an unhealthy meal during the day or very nutritious food later in the evening. And he said the meal in the day was better because "eating later in the evening turns even nutritious food into junk." We have not only been eating junk food but we've been eating junk food at night. And that's why we are all unhealthy.

That’s nonsense what you say about not eating after sunset. I’ve been running with 1 meal a day, at night and I can eat what I want and as much as I want. I qualify this by saying I also walk ~25k steps a day. Being “on the edge” by training yourself to live with a slight hunger is exactly where you want to be. I call that “in the zone”

Otherwise they just keep flowing around in your body and makes a mess. Not saying this is behind your experience, but its something to pay attention to. But once your body starts adapting to breaking down fats and make ketones to fuel your brain, then you will feel much better and be MUCH sharper in the head. I used to have foggy brain and hard time remembering things. Im MUCH sharper after going Keto and also fasting.

I've seen this diet, fasting bandwagon on my siblings, relatives and they look thin but also look drained and older. I'm 44 and still attract younger than me coz they say i'm babyface. My advice, first and most important manage your stress, choose peace of mind, choose people around you that are simple minded or not complicated, make you feel good, laugh and make your forget stress, don't be adulting too much, get back to activities that are fun to you when you we're young, 2nd, for me rock music, or music that makes you enjoy when you were young coz psychologically it makes you feel young again, 3rd balanced exercise. Summary, in short its all in the mind, think like a young guy coz mind is powerful and will follow in your appearance. The earlier you apply this in life before you're 40s the more noticeable compared to your same age. Also, don't follow every scientist youtuber you see coz their studies are not conclusive, they are still in experimental stage and you're one of the experiments and it might not really be true after years of study. For the diet, just balance diet is all you need, don't eat too much, that's it.

Excellent info and great context in a few sentences about the biology of genetics and epigenetics. I believe at this point until more discovery that your gut health determines what you can do relative to other people. There are other things too but the microbiome in the gut has trillions of bacteria , good and bad. That is why there can't be a one shoe fits all approach to food. Yes there are similarities among the population. Then, factor in whole food vs processed. I think a whole real food diet vs the SAD ( standard american diet ) can be the difference in overall health. Again, because of the diversity of our acquired genetics and the present state of our gut bacteria along with any conditions or disease will determine how long we will live. We were not meant to sit inside for long periods. We were meant to eat much less and less often, get sun, eat real whole food, and stress our bodies to continue to adapt. We can all argue what type food to eat even if it's real food and not fake food. Eat real food and listen to your body, fast, exercise, get out doors and try to enjoy life. Turn off the TV. Good luck

Skipping breakfast always and skipping dinner sometimes is useful. No breakfast extends the night fast and skipping dinner helps me to sleep. Nothing worse (not really...) than trying to sleep and you are hot and agitated most of the night because your stomach is churning and grinding away on dinner and not letting your heart quiet down. Just as important for sleep are a quiet, dark, and cool bedroom and no alarm to wake to. You are lucky if you have all of those.

But the fasting lowers your insulin resistance which helps you process the carbs better when you eat them at dinner. I eat a lot of cheese nuts fruits meat tomatoes and avocados at lunch. David is an incredible orator of all things young. Finding him on Rogan was instrumental to my survival nearing 4 yrs. Over a yr and 1/2 I took nmn resveratrol and to a lesser time metformin. I turned 60 this summer and all I can atest is everything David shares on aging is gold. I in general don't trust most of the supplement world mainly because of hawking aspects. Thing is David until his book came out didn't sell anything, in truth you don't need to buy his book he podcasts and routinely gives away his message! I could spend days talking about one of sciences greatest modern thinkers, instead I will say this. If you are intrested in finding an alternative to why you age and how your current understanding isn't working, if you want to feel younger vibrant youthfulness, energetic, healthier! Dr David Sinclair is not a cure he is where you start! Finding your path to youthfulness dosen't have to be difficult its that simple.ask yourself does my current way of living offer you health ? do you have a youthful outlook? Am I having my best life? am I Happy. I've used his suggestions personally and I began to really live in my mid 50s, I have cancer and liver disease and I have more energy now then I've had since I was in my early 20s I still have issues I don't use any form of cancer drug nor do I use drugs (street or legal) the later is why I have liver disease! For me I went from 230 lbs to 138 lbs from disease of liver and skin cancer. I had 2 choices in 2019 change or die a miserable death. You see I came to this Crossroads as a result of many poor decisions. Fasting helped me to the first step, simplification of life choices was step 2 getting out of my head leaving room for change and incoming new information. Less poor choices from food and consumption in general. Allowed me a shot at a new life. This may not help you, that's normal, however my new choices have given me my best life! Fasting, gave me a new choice! I'm fond of this saying especially on the topic of fasting or aging ( it's not what you take - its what you take in ). I wish you all a long and healthy life! Doug 😎

But if you're taking sunlight and exercising daily and taking good sleep and eating a lot of veggies and drinking lots of water and you are stress free, you will look younger even if you don't fast a single day. Yes, but... It will give signals to your body that there is something unusual and "wrong" with your body, so your immune system will check you and it will heal things that with proteins won't be possible to see (when you have enough proteins, your immune system will hardly see that something is wrong in your body). So, yes; you will lose your mass a bit, but it will benefit your body. Of course, don't forget to eat healthy and don't skip your juices.

@@Yannnus - Autophagy has nothing to do with this! Jason Fung is a great poster boy for fasting and yet he has never told anyone not even ONCE to reduce protein intake. This guy claims the people should reduce protein on a daily basis, not as a result of fasting. I support fasting done in moderation, but if you are fasting you are not gonna be eating anything anyway and it is a different process that eating other stuff and not protein. When you fast, a lot of reactions occur, but when you are simply reducing protein, these reactions are not going to take place because calories are coming in. Dr. Sinclair suggests reducing protein to live and this will reduce muscle mass. And that is the original CoderGrammar is talking about, not fasting.

It's not ideal for thin people. I did 1 day every 2 weeks 24hrs and lost way too much weight.

Do not fast if you are slim you need to fuel and nourish your body before you get into these kind of fasts, its exactly like exercising, if you dont fuel your body the right way, you will feel tired and exhausted, and it may harm you, as an experinsed in fasting i can do easily 1 dry fast and even 3 days, but you need to eat healthy in order to fast and repair your body and i dont suggest you fast everyday, thats not good for the human body and i dont care what anyone says, you should fast atleast 2 days a week, or every other day, you eat one day and you fast the next day and in the end of the day you eat a small meal, thats the best type of fasting, no 16 hours everyday bullshit

As a slim, trying to maintain and even build muscle individual, but also wants the health benefits of fasting/autophagy, I understand. I’m trying to find the balance. I usually go 12-16 hours. There are different accounts of when the benefits of fasting occur but hoping I’m receiving some health benefits. From a muscle building standpoint which is critical for healthy aging meshing the two poses its challenges.

@@mustafafh4402 Daily IF is not "bullshit". It's not a fad, it's a way of life, there are many people successfully utilizing it and enhancing their health in myriad ways. If your fasting program works for you, great. But don't shit on the many people who are having great results from having a daily fasting window. You have nothing to support your harsh criticism except your own opinion, which any thinking person should take with a boulder of salt. I do agree that very thin people should exercise caution when it comes to fasting, for any length of time, but even they can benefit from perhaps a weekly 24 hour fast, as opposed to daily IF. Yes, even thin people need to give their digestive system a rest, as it can help to restore equilibrium to their overall health.
