This is so incredibly accurate. Crouching and jumping are the cornerstones of interacting with strangers in online games. Also making a smile out of bullet holes/arrows and looking between them and it really fast. Also sharing healing items when possible if you really want to be friends. We revert to hunter gatherer communication tactics and alliances and I honestly love that more than using typing or a voice chat to communicate. Also when you can tell someone is confused or surprised because they're a little hesitant, then get excited that you're on their side.

I once had a perfect teammate. We were absolutely unstopable during the fights. Together we could have taken down an entire team of enemies and rush anyone we wanted. I wasn't cooperating that well even with my actual friends. Right after our fabulous victory this teammate dissapeared forever. It was a pleasure to play with him.

Actually, we accept the friend request. Don't talk or play with them for years. Then one day you're playing a new game and see them also playing it. You need another person for a full squad. You invite them, and then an online friendship that lasts forever ensues.

Nowadays I always decline, but back in the days I always accepted, which 99% of the times led to during one of the friendlist cleanups (cause hundreds of ppl is too many - at least until steam got friend-folders) I saw a name I had no clue about and shot a message "cleaning up my friendlist atm, don't recognize the nick. Accepted a friend request from a guy once that I met in an open world game and regretted it in the first mission after. The guy was a lowlevel but played in such a kamikaze-like way that even a higher level wouldn't have helped him. This hits close to home. When the Elder Scrolls Online came out none of my friends played the previous games so no e of them bought it. I was alone for a long time, there was a certain spider cave that was meant to be a squad cave but being alone I tried it and got smoked every time. Than all of a sudden a group of players came and asked if I wanted to join it was the best thing ever. We dominated that cave and many others alike 🤘🏻

This is how I always knew someone in ESO was friendly: I crouched. They crouched back. I jumped up and down. They did likewise. XD It's a good way to see if they want to party up and do some dungeon runs. always worked, too.

I love how The Crouch has so many meaning and requires the minimal amount of context to make sense. Take Halo. You can "Celebratory Crouch" on the corpse of your enemy. You can Excitedly Crouch when meeting a Frenemy through bullet proof glass to make a new friend. It can be used as a timing tool like "on the Crouch of Three".

I was in the middle of a mission and someone just popped into my game randomly. I immediately moved directly in front of them and crouched. They reciprocated and crouched as well. Without a word we took on hordes of enemies together. Never a request sent for friendship, the one silent conversation was worth a lifetime of friendship. Probably.

You know you don't always have to socialize with them or chat with them?....you can just game with them and be silent....that's what I would do sometimes...I still join xbox parties if people spam invite me and plug in my mic so it's not broadcasting through the tv but I can still hear them and I just play with the mic on mute and don't talk....silent friendships on gaming can be a thing....

One of my most memorable moments from WoW was when I was an alliance player in Stranglethorne and had the "jump up and down" greeting with a horde player and we cleared the coast together. This gave me nostalgic feels

I have a similar memory! Except I played Horde. I liked to run into Alliance toons out questing and emote nice things at them. Sometimes I’d wait until they were attacking a difficult mob and then assist, and then point to the next mob and nod. Like 75% of the time they’d nod back and we’d run around killing the mobs together and trade off tagging. (I know tagging mechanics changed… but I can’t remember when.) 25% of the time I was ignored or /spit emoted. Yeah, this was a non-PVP server. Anyway, you weren’t on the US Malygos server were you? 😂😂

That's the real gamer's sign language! Don't know how it began, but crouching a few times always seems to signify that you want to be friendly with the opposing player (if he is still alive, so not speaking about tea bagging).

Actually that is why we shake hands in the western world or bow with both hands in the eastern world. To show our hands are not holding any weapons. And it begane with the very first online games where chat was not usually implemented or used, or only usable with friends and so on. I think as a comment mentioned the first thing was wiggling in something like quake, but since wiggle is only ever used in shooters and crouching is basicially in any game these days, it has become the norm. In games where you can't crouch like top downs, eratic left-right movement might still be used to signal friendship. Fun fact: no matter how toxic a community is, I RARELY see this abused. It is like the pirates code. No matter how shitty we are, this is something that does not get abused.

Yeah its because in PvP games, its a way to show you're active in the interaction but not inherently hostile. Because the alternative is just going right ahead and trying to kill them, the active crouch says "i mean no harm" in a way simply standing still never could.

It doesn't take much before you get used to it surprisingly. Some games require it from their players. Hell let loose is a good example that I recently had to learn to be more open with voice comms.
