I believe you have it flipped. Stress (cortisol) would inhibit inflammation and suppress the immune system which can cause problems down the line if you're chronically stressed Bacterial infection causes the release of pro-inflam cytokines (IL-1, 6, etc.) which bind to receptors resulting in cortisol production.

You are right that acute stress and the release of cortisol can modulate the immune system. Under chronic stress cortisol receptors can become resistant and cortisol will fail to dampen inflammation. Under chronic stress the effect of cortisol can actually flip and promote inflammation. There is also an immediate inflammatory response with stress driven by the sympathetic nervous system.
