Thank you Mr. Professor Garry for sharing your knowledge, I’m back again, I remember in one of your videos, I don’t remember which one, if you we’re talking about “Pure Crop 1” I can’t remember if you recommend it for avocado trees. What video did you talk about it?

Happy New from Western Australia. I am impressed with your knowledge on avocado trees. I have a small number of different types of avocado trees and have one that I purchased from a commercial nursery that I do not know want type of tree it is ! My major concern is that some of my Hass trees are massively loaded with small fruit. The trees have started to lose their leaves at the top. Now all that remains is the fruit and no leaves. Even though a lot of the fruit has fallen. For you comments. John

Yes. My avocado tree leaves are dropping, too. But too young for any fruit yet. Similar question . . . Think I may be watering too deeply after hearing Gary mention watering frequently, but lightly. I'm trying that now.
@chuckw20294 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, loved the videos. You spoke about spraying sugar on the leaves. You said one ounce sugar, seaweed and fertilizer per one gallon. Can it simply be sugar and water? Do I have to have the seaweed and fertilizer? Not sure what the benefit is there.
@omarvazquez56134 жыл бұрын
I think he said, mix 25% Honey, and 75% water. So that should work.

Hi Gary.. I have a few question. If I plant avocado in my backyard using a mound, how do I prepare the native soil below the mound? Do I loosen the the soil below the mound? Then for the mound, should I only use builders sand or mix the builders sand with a bit of compost? When you said builder sand, is quikcrete all-purpose sand at home depot is good or decomposed granite?
@GarysBestGardening5 жыл бұрын
You could loosen the soil under the mound a little, but not so much that it will shrink when watering. Just 100% builders sand would be good, the quikcrete from home depot works.
@caseG805 жыл бұрын
Lots of Mulch and compost remember only takes very little on top of soil only.

@@GarysBestGardening hi Gary, i'm from Panama, Central America. It's nice to hear one can use builders sand... down here we got heavy heavy clay soil.. just killed 3 avocados... i will do a mount with my new avocados, and i guess sand will do the trick with a lot of mulch on top..

Gary, Can I pot a Carmen and what soil do you recommend? Your Top Pot mix? And could I also use Top Pot for a potted Alphonso Mango? Thanks!
@GarysBestGardening6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can absolutely pot a Carmen, we have one in a 24" box that does well. I wouldn't go any smaller than a 24" box though. Our Top Pot potting soil is what we would recommend, and it would be great for mangoes as well.

Because Hass only has a good crop every three years and grows so tall wouldn't sugar applications help with crop and tree height? I'm a beginner with a Hass and Fuerte in the ground. Just installed city is Mission Viejo. I feel I should add the root rot stuff to my waterings the next 10 years. Any comments appreciated thanks.
@GarysBestGardening6 жыл бұрын
Sugar applications would definitely help with the growth, as it supplements the plant with additional energy during the growing season. Applying water mixed with a small amount of honey onto the flowers during bloom will increase the fruit production as well, as mentioned in the video.

Great video, a lot of good info!! I do have a question. I live in NY. I’m quite sure (correct me if I’m wrong) an avocado tree of any kind would not survive our winters unsheltered. Is bringing indoors an option ? A little makeshift greenhouse? Also I’m growing from seed, how long until they will produce fruit/ flower? I appreciate any and all help!! Again, great video !!

Try to find an Aravaipa avocado from Arizona. Look on line at the Desert Gardening Hub.

Howdy Thomas! I live in Central Texas and it gets cold in down here as well, so I baby my avocado trees big time. I built a lean to green house and kept my mother trees inside and survived great. I also have seedlings that I graft desirable scions to, and kept those in the garage. Take a gander at some of my vids for suggestions.

If I wanted to do a raised bed what would the optimum dimensions be? You said that they like sandy soil, I have sandy clay, would I just need to add more sand (builders sand?) I'm in zone 9b in AZ, would the Carmen tree do well here? Thanks
@GarysBestGardening6 жыл бұрын
Michaela Gibbs for the raised beds, it is really up to you on how high and how wide you want it. We have seen raised beds that are a few inches high do well, as well as several feet. Yes, adding sand will increase the permeability of the soil. Builders sand is what we recommend. While the Carmen will do well, you will need to whitewash the trunks and the branches of the trees because the sun in AZ is a lot harsher than CA.

I am going to pull my three year old tree out and get one of yours. I have a house built on sand. I’m going to take mine out, it’s two years old No fruit yet. I know what you said . It was growing well in its 2 gal pot. I dug a hole three feet deep and put in potting soil I know bad , the leaves are falling off all browning at the tips even new growth. So sad I am killing my tree I will leave the leaves for the next one. For Santa Maria which cultivar should I buy? Thank you .

Also do you ship your bags of soil to Texas?
@GarysBestGardening6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately our supplier does not carry our soil in all of their warehouses across the country, only a few on the West Coast. Hopefully, however, we will be able to ship the soil across the country, as we just started to be able to ship across CA, WA, OR, and NV.

Hi I'd like to put an avocado in the ground but I have poor draining soil which is very compact. I live in San Antonio, Texas. Should I dig a large hole and fill it with sandy soil? Or plant above ground? The problem with that is the back section of my yard when it rains literally floods for days. Could I still plant it in a mound of sand just higher up?
@GarysBestGardening6 жыл бұрын
Planting on a mound of sandy soil would be a better option. We have done that several times here in California and the trees have done very well. As long as the place you plant it doesn't have sitting water for longer than a day, you should be fine.
