How The Detroit Lions Ended 32 Years of Misery

32 years. That’s how long the Lions had to wait in between playoff wins. Detroit has only made the playoffs 13 times in the 58 years of the Super Bowl era that began in 1966. The Lions didn’t win a playoff game until 1991. One week later, they lost in the NFC Championship. Then, Detroit had to wait until 2023 for their second postseason win and NFC Championship appearance. It’s been nothing but pain and misery for Detroit fans. There was once a glimmer of hope when Matthew Stafford was in town, but he never won a playoff game there. Instead, he was traded and won a ring of his own with the Rams. In that trade, the Lions got Jared Goff, the quarterback that would ultimately lead them to a playoff win and he’d do it alongside Dan Campbell, who played for Detroit during that winless 2008 season. That was rock bottom for the Lions, but the hard times are over.

Tbh, the Stafford trade for Goff and picks is what saved the franchise. We had to start fresh from Patricia mess we got into in the first place. 😢

I disagree. Hiring Campbell, Spielman, and Holmes is what saved this franchise. If the Goff/Stafford trade never happened, the Lions would still be on the rise. They just would not likely be this far ahead in the process.

It was a perfect storm that starts with Sheila and every hire she made and the decisions made by those hires etc. Cleaning house after the Quintricia debacle and yes, the trade. ALL of it was integral to the sweeping change the Lions needed.

As a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, I am super happy that Matthew Stafford got his ring. He proved that he is the elite QB the Lions knew he would become when they drafted him. Now, we can move forward with Goff and look forward to a promising future with him as our QB and Campbell as our HeadCoach. It's the beginning of what is going to be very successful on the field every Sunday for the near future.

I bet he learned a lot of things from Sean Payton. The man was 1 of the highest paid coaches in the NFL at one time. He had foresight too. He signed a man with a broken shoulder, and won a Superbowl, and if it was for that no call at the NFC Championship game against the Rams. They would have gotten a chance to win another Superbowl.

I have followed Goff since his first game at CAL, also when he played with the Rams and once he was traded I started to follow the Lions. I personally think he is the main reason for the Lions success, because when the chain needs to be moved, he does it. However, I do get upset because the media and a large fan base give him very little credit for the Lions success. When he beat Stafford, it seemed like if Goff was chop liver and everyone was talking about how great Stafford played, yet it was Goff who made the right place to allow the Lions to win.

@@gabriellavasquez9120 He led them to the Superbowl, not his fault that Gurley was a shell of himself after the injury and that McVay was out-coached by Belichick. You put a good and experience coach instead of McVay and the Rams would have won that game. The game was 13-3 and not 55-3, like everyone makes it seem like, and the game was lost in the 4th quarter.

Brad Holmes is absurd on draft. I saw the documentary that the Lions made about the 2023 draft, his work is impeccable. He and Dan are on the same terms and he has the necessary freedom of work from the ownership. Before his GM period, he had a ton of experience with scouting, over 10 years I think, reached director of scouting with the Rams.

What is totally overlooked in this video is what Lions fans always called for: change in ownership. During the MP era, Martha Firestone Ford ceded ownership to Sheila Ford Hamp. She put MP on a short leash, and fired the Boston Boys after the 2020 Thanksgiving game embarrassment. The 1st person Sheila brought in to interview for the open GM position was all-time Lion, all-90s LB, analyst, and brother of a GM, Chris Spielman. He declined the GM role, but she still brought Chris in as a freelance executive. Those 2 moves of ownership change to Sheila and hiring of Chris Spielman set the Lions on their current path. And you totally skipped over it.🤦🤷

Normally, I am not fond of coaches who wear emotions on their sleeves (mainly cause sports media LOVES drama, and emotions are a big source of that), but Campbell is absolutely the right person to help turn this Lions team around. While future success is yet to be determined, the Lions do have a strong core to build around, mainly Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St Brown, and Aidan Hutchinson. Hitting on your draft picks is one thing, but the right coaching is also needed to maximize the team's potential, and the Lions did exactly what with the guys Campbell brought with him. Myself, I think the real challenge for the Lions is whether they can still function as a unit without some of the current pieces. OC Ben Johnson is a name floated around for HC material. Jared Goff is a UFA next season, so the Lions definitely have to think about their next guy under center. Plus, with the core guys I mentioned due for a big payday soon, the Lions have to manage their salary cap properly, lest they let the wrong people walk, which in turn, affects team cohesion. Regardless, I am impressed with how the Lions have turned things around. All I can wish for is this Lions team to continue building momentum for the future.

My Rams got their Super Bowl and Lions got their potential next franchise QB which has proven to be true. Not to speak ill of the dead but her father bought the team in 1963 and the team had been mediocre in the best of times until his widow turned over the team to their daughter in 2020. Sheila did in 3 years what her father couldn't do in nearly 40. Stafford was the savior of Detroit Lions football, just not how you think he is. He went to the same high school as Bobby Layne, who cursed us for trading him because he didn't want to be traded. Stafford requested a trade specifically to LA, and previous Lions regimes would have sent him somewhere else, but this one said "We'll get you to LA." We did Layne wrong, but we did Stafford right. That's what broke the Curse.

Correction, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were technically never in the NFC North, so they've never won it.

Jamo didnt gamble on nfl games. Thats a whole season suspension. It was betting on college football in a team facility.

The fans were booing the Rams more than they were booing Stafford.

Jamison didn’t not be on NFL games, he bet on other college. If he bet on NFL games he would have been permanently banned from the NFL.

As a WAS fan I'm excited for him to be our HC. I doubt he'll leave the Lions destitute without him, he'd leave a replacement. Lions and WAS fans lowkey respect each other a lot, closer to an alliance than a rivalry.

Detroit makes it to the Superbowl and loses. Then Detroit trades Goff back to Rams for Stafford and Lions win the SB next years with Stafford 🤣🤣🤣 that would be crazy, hilarious, and f'd up (for Goff)
