After the first few months of the pandemic, my job decided to go into 4-day work weeks, and even reduced our hours. So we went from 40 to 30hrs. During that time, it was financially tough, and with things feeling so uncertain, I can’t say that it improved my productivity much. It was certainly nice having 3 day weekends, but it’s tough to say if it was good. What I do know, is that companies should place more of an emphasis upon results rather than the number of hours worked. Some days, productivity will be low, and for a multitude of reasons; other days, productivity will be very high. Companies aren’t often willing to entertain this, however, because the idea of paying someone for “nothing” is too painful to them. But when the average employee is only productive for about half of the day anyway…it does make you think.

Good take - I personally find myself more productive coming back from an extended break, although I feel it really does depend on each person, their work ethics, and even the type of work they do. It's a good suggestion that companies could focus more on results vs the number of hours they work (similar to sales type of roles), but I'm also curious how it could impact peoples mental health since sale type roles also isn't for everyone as well. Regardless, good perspective and thanks Tylor, always appreciate the comments.

@@FrankHuynh Yes, I agree. And one thing to add, I’m actually saying this on the behalf of the employee, not the company. I don’t think people should be paid less money. It’s that if a company is running smoothly and an employee has finished all of their tasks in a week, there is no more value they can deliver after that, without becoming inherently less productive. In summary, I think a ‘good’ employee, will make up for the days they aren’t as productive. So giving them more PTO rather than working them 40hrs for the sake of working them, might be more beneficial to the employee.

Currently in a company with 4day work week. I love the longer weekends. I can do things that I need to do in 1 weekday without filing a leave

To be honest on the weekends I get really bored. I like days off obviously but 3 days I would really need to find something to do lol
