This is the very first time that I watch one of your videos and I must say this one really connected with what I feel. I’m 23 years old and I’ve always felt alone and isolated, I used to have a small group of friends in high school but I never felt connected to them, and the same scenario is repeating itself right now I have like 4 friends that I don’t see very often, they’re the type of friends that I only see like once every 2 weeks, the type of friends that I wanna text during the week but they hardly ever reply, and when we end up hanging out I still feel as lonely and isolated as before. I just don’t think I’ve met the right people just yet.. I realized a few weeks ago that my friends barely know anything about me? But I know everything about them. I’m here to listen to them but no one is here to listen to me when I speak. I recently went back to study and joined a digital marketing school, I hope I’ll be able to finally make real friends this time, I’m tired of doing most of the things I enjoy alone..

bro I feel this way, but it's even worse than your situations, I've got friends I meet up with like maybe 5 times a year. Friends who reply late, friends who you also don't connect with during the time you eventually hang out. I think I only have one super real friend that I can meet face to face, but he moved, and we again only meet around 2-3 times a year now. I also got like one other friend who checks up on me a lot but we also never get to meet up, those two are the main ones, there was another friend I had who I had a great hang out and talk with but then he moved and no longer replies to my messages. It's lonely af but you gotta just become a buddhist monk about it all and use this as an opportunity to focus on yourself, work, hobbies, career and creativity

This resonates with me a whole lot. I am currently in my freshman year of college, about two months in, and I have yet to make any friends. Part of it is that I have some considerable social anxiety which greatly inhibits my ability to introduce myself and to initiate conversations, but I have also jam packed my schedule this semester so I am extremely inundated with work. I am often the instrument of my own isolation. When I was in high school, I would exist in a social liminal space where I would get along with everyone but not really connect with anyone, so I really understand a lot of what you’re feeling with respect to that. I have lived a lot of my life looking for some deeper connection, meanwhile I would be closed off from people, and, furthermore, I was not always really connected with myself. Although our situations are still (probably) incredibly different, I admire you for being so optimistic, and for being able to put yourself out there in such an authentic way. This feels really incoherent, but I wanted to put it in writing here.

Never too late to turn things around in the social department.. I hope. As a high school senior, I've always dreamed of close friends, yet only ever watched those around me make theirs. I call myself an introvert and look forward to quiet weekends, but recently I've wanted nothing more than to escape the utter loneliness and emptiness that seems to have become my baseline.. computers and coding aren't as fun as they used to be. I know I need to get out there more, but I feel lost.. It's hard to look forward to college as an opportunity for starting over without worrying about repeating the same pattern. And 8 months is a long time to wait.. I know your story is relatively opposite to mine, but I felt urged to say something. Hope y'all are doing well, keep staying positive! We'll get there..

Sad thing about this society is we spend less time with peoples that live near us (because we don't find them interesting) and the most connections we make are as kids at school before age 10, then we all get busy and develop our hobbies that most times are different from others of the same age, we end up having friends from all over the world online but they still are not deep friendships.. we don't have human body connection and we live mostly inside our dark homes

This is exactly what's happened to me. I only realized it was a problem about a year ago in my Junior year of high school, after devoting two years (1 lockdown, 1 after) solely to online friends who share my exact interests. They're of all ages (16-50+), ethnicities, countries, etc. Now I'm completely alone and have no idea where to go to find people. Real people in person, that I can see. Last true friends were in elementary school. Hoping and trying to change things but it's hard!

I just saw your channel a month ago and I really like your contents, it's so refreshing! I'm 30 years old and I have a lot of friends from Elementary to Highschool and less new friends when I was in college. I'm an easy to be with person and they said I'm funny, so I quite have lots of friends that I call brothers, up until now we hang out but they're starting a new chapter of their lives like getting married or having kids (I'm not planning to have a family, kids or getting married). I don't know but as I grew older, it seems like meeting new people is not fun anymore. I always want to be alone and entertain myself by playing music or gaming, I do exercise as well and have a day job. I kind of envy you because you're able to travel, explore new things and you're still young (I know I'm not that old, but it feels like I am hahahaha). As I've watched a lot of your videos, it seems like you're genuine and a curious guy, it seems like you're fun to be around with. Oh well just sharing. Looking forward for more of your contents man. keep it up!

Thanks, Max. Your videos, including this one, are consistently creative, well produced, entertaining, and thought provoking. Often those thoughts IMO are developed from overthinking a topic, but that’s ok - anything that any of us can do to bring meaning and peace to our own life is good. In this case, the answer to why you - or anyone - has trouble making friends has nothing to do with the presence or absence of technology or how we interact with it. The answer is way deeper and more personal. Keep exploring. You’ll get there! Thanks for years of wonderful work!

What you said about long distance friendships completely resonates with me. Im in an area where I didnt really connect with a whole lot of people in the small high school I went to, dont really connect with many people in the town I live in, but online, actually started with a certain type of gaming, we've built these large friendship circles of people with some similar interests that I completely connect with, I know the ins and outs of their lives, I know them as people better than the vast majority of people I've ever known in person, its lead to many people getting jobs in the same industries, many living together, many travelling together, I've met many of these people and have many of the closest friendships I've ever had. What I would say though, is that connecting online, I feel like its easier to make that first connection with certain people than it is in real life in many cases. You dont have the social anxiety you would have in real life, I feel like theres a lot less pressure. For as much talk as there is about people being fake on social media, which..does happen a lot, but I feel like many people are also much more real on social media and communication online than they would be in person, especially in 1 on 1 communication.

yeah i've tried going on internet detox many times. It was better, so much better, but i still felt like its just escaping from actually solving the 'problem'. Im trying to learn how to deal with it, to use it to make me and my life better, to improve. I have one friend in another country who i've never met before and many times i wish we could live near each other. To experience that same vision of the world we have. To share the fantasy of one another. And seeing your videos make me inspired but i still havent got the money for doing anything like you are. Plus my english isnt that great either ':D I wish i could join your adventures. You know, american people are all like 'oh woww life is great, look at this look at that, how beautiful' etc. :D And i really want to be in a community with this much positivity. But nations arent the same, sadly. People around me are all depressed and hard realistic - it is hard for me to get them on seeing with another pair of glasses. Im also a bit broken cus of that and afraid they will break me sometime. So, the point is, im alone, and i've always been alone. Hard to cheer up these people. XD And yes, i have that good friend on the internet who sees the world as me, and that is great. But im still unsure if this is really what friendships are gonna be. Life wants us to be with our people and share the positivity at the place where we are. Its great tho that youve come this far and youre able to reach us too. Im still so grateful that ive got to know you :) I hope youll never give up on what you believe. Everythings great and i just wanted you to know that you inspire me to choose an unique way of living. ^^ Take care Max :D

I also have those thoughts. On one hand, its awesome to have the ability to get to know people via the internet and its easier getting to know people in general. But doing this, you have the problem that these people may live far away from you. I'm wondering if it can really be called a friendship if you are not able to see the person you truly connect with through the internet. In the other hand I would be excited getting to know more people through the internet and potentially finding people, I truly connect with:) I found his channel because of the "travelling with a girl I didn't know before" - video and I cant tell you how much it touched me...until now. This was THE video, which touched me the most from all videos I've watched until now. I would also enjoy travelling with another person as I also enjoy photography as Max does and I'm also a pretty empathetic human - maybe thats why the video touched me as much:)

I don't agree though. I study psychology at university. A face to fave interaction is so much more complex than a text. It's immediate (no time to think of a perfect response answer), it has reading the other persons face and tone of voice included, as well as your own voice and face. But it also gives you so much more back. Studies show that. Bonding is not just about sharing "interests". My interests are piano, sports and filmmaking. But I never talk with my friends about these things. I am 21 and I travelled for 8 months in total solo, and I made a shitton of deep connections on the way. With 38 year old spanish bike fixers, a 60 year old dad, people from brazil, israel... there are really no limits. I don't think you need to look in other countries to find people that are compatible. You connect with people you never would have thought before. I used to be very shy too! But making friends is totally learnable. Especially for young girls there are extremely high correlationd between social media and depression. So maybe speak for yourself, in these topics. Because science says different things.

Thank you! This video kind of feels like he needs to justify his work on a social media platform. In the end, SM is a part of our lives but IRL connection is the real deal and something we should but an active afford in. I'd call it 'practicing friendships'. I guess the basecamp is exactly this.
@maciekj6579
@maciekj6579 Жыл бұрын
I think what he was referring to was the 'discovery' of new people through the internet, more so than building deep connections - that part comes later. Just like you travelled 8 months solo and met plenty of new people that led to deeper connections, the social media aspect would achieve a similar effect - at least in theory. Then, having met those people, the face-to-face interactions can begin, just like the one in Oregon around which the whole video is centred. Of course, I have absolutely no education in psychology so this theory is as good as anyone's, but I have a very similar experience to the one Max described at the moment in high school - I just can't click with anyone and I don't have a high school 'tribe' or 'clique'. I feel really isolated and lonely even when I'm around people just from watching their connections being better than any that I have. The worst part is that I do not think I'm shy at all and am very open to people, it just never works out into anything deeper than a shallow friendship. I digress. All in all, I understand the video as showing the power of the internet in meeting new people - the equivalent of the deep connections you made when travelling 8 months in total solo. Of course, it requires more effort in some ways, such as having to explicitly organise a meet-up instead of meeting in person in the first place. In my opinion, that is a small price to pay. I am very interested in hearing your opinion to this! And sorry for the long rant, the topic of the video just hit very close to home for me. :)

@@maciekj6579 I share your experiences with high school a lot (Im a current senior). I've dedicated a lot of time to "online friends" over the last few years, who share the same passions for building, learning, tech, some gaming, etc. I absolutely agree with the gap between online and IRL friends with deep connections, but since many of the people I've met online are so much older (50+) and across the world, I haven't found any way to cross that bridge into true deep friendships. We're all on our own separate paths, but linked, somewhat weakly, by this magical network. I regret not pushing myself past the comfort of my room more than I have, and simultaneously wish I could surround myself with peers like my online friends. Thanks for sharing your story by the way!
@lisagehrig7023
@lisagehrig7023 11 ай бұрын
@@maciekj6579 Firstly, in psychology we learn about studies and studies are about averages,. Even the best psychologist can't speak for everyone, so your own experience is totally valid. People differ greatly in their threshholds for friendships. Some people need a very deep connection and similarity to consider someone as a friend, others don't. But I still support the point that making a connection, it's a skill. If you focus on understanding the other person, being curious for their world, asking questions and learning about their story. You will see that you can relate A LOT of people. Because we're all human with the same basic struggles and emotions. You're not an alien. You're probably much more similar to everyone else than you think. And maybe focus on giving a friendly first impression. Max for example can come across as quite cold (even if he isn't at all) which might be a reason why people don't open up to him at first. That's an issue he doesn't have online. If it works better for you to make the first steps online, totally go for that!:) Maybe you are really in an environment that doesn't fit to you.

23 years old and i don’t have a single friend that I absolutely click with. I feel like I’m always the one who listens but I’m not listened to. I’ve stopped myself from making new friends. I know my soul tribe is somewhere out there. And I feel the same way. I’ve felt alone pretty much all 23 years of my life

Why is it so important to make and have 'friends'?........A confident, self assured person relies upon themselves, and learns how to respect all acquaintances that come their way.
@cjay2
@cjay2 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I never spent my youth searching for 'friends'. I just always had people around me that I hung out with, without thinking about constantly 'looking' for friends. Of course, we didn't have cellphones and social networks to warp our perception of the world. We met. Face to face. You got along or you didn't. If you did, you hung out. If not, you went your ways. So what if you can meet someone from around the world? You don't need to. Done.

@@elguate96 explain to me what a 'true' friend is? if not someone who is all about themselves.... Self confidence allows you to be self-reliant...which means there is no need to place pressure onto someone other than yourself.....so really, Acquaintances are more than enough for self confident people.

It's so interesting that we all live on the EARTH and even though there is a lot difference between our life, we still own the same feelings. I think it's a generations fills of a lot emotions. We feel anxiety and exciting randomly in short time. It's so good to realize that there's someone really do efforts on what you confuse, that's you, Max. At last I'm an audience from Taiwan, hope there will be a day you come and I can be your guide🤣

This is so true I don’t think I would be the person I am today without KZbin and all the ppl I ve decided to follow online… and yes sometimes I tend to overuse my phone and to escape from reality through it but still if you learn to balance your phone use with real life I think social media could become a tool to help us enhance our life for the better :)

At about the 10 minute and 40 second mark or so, you come to the correct conclusion i think. Those you WOULD be able to become friends with ARE indeed those of us on here watching you. I am pretty sure you and I would be able to connect quite deeply anyways. I think you would make an amazing BEST friend. Sigh... unfortunately i doubt we will ever get that chance. But I greatly wish the best for those who do. There are allot of GREAT people in this world. You just have to take the time to both find and locate them.

Your videos are always so inspiring because you speak your truth and your feelings and your thoughts, and it makes me think about how I feel and what about I think about what you are saying, and this is the kind of videos we should see more of on KZbin tbh. It's refreshing and, again, inspiring. Hope you continue posting and live your life fully !

I think all types of strong human connections are rare things and always will be. It's easy to get connected, stay connected, be with someone for a short time (like this camp). With tech and content creation, it is now even more simpler. Such types of connections are also important for us as humans. But the main thing is to find high-level and deep connections. Most people think that they have such connections, but in reality, that's not even close. So if your bar of saying such things as "He is my Friend" is high, then it's completely okay and you're honest with yourself and the world around you. And, let's be clear, truth and knowledge are usually both a blessing and a curse at the same time, you need to just accept it. Finding your real friend, your second half or creating your team of really passionate and goal-sharing people is hard. It's like finding a rare mineral. And it's not because of technology or anything, it's simply because of: a) probability - the chance of just finding the one, that is Your person and you will be His person is very low b) time - we don't have that much time to meet that many people to make the probability work more often Hope, this will add some additional layers to your thought process. Keep up with searching for the Truth :)

You always put together a great video. But you never did answer the main question regarding why you struggle making friends. I don’t think you’ve found the answer yet. But if it still bothers you, I hope do figure it out. Or you can just accept yourself for who you are. That takes a huge amount of courage.
